24.01.2022 Today I worked with Maya. Lovely young dancer with hypermobility. And I got inspired to share with you all this simple exercise we practised today. It is perfect for those who struggle with posture, "chicken wings", #portdebras strength, neck pain and even hip or foot issues. Hypermobile dancers will find it particularly helpful as it stimulates deep stability muscles which they so desperately need for keeping their bodies strong and safe. Now, I have tried to share it in a... video format, but it looks like I wasn't successful...not insta savvy...yet So here it is in photo sequence. #1 exercise ball will give you support for lower half of the body while you work on the upper half. Especially useful if you struggle with position on your knees and hands where control of all length of spine is difficult in the early stages. #2 roll your body over the ball to support yourself on your hands. Have your elbows looking at each other, neck long, chin tucked in, wide and flat space between shoulder blades. Take 3 umbrella breaths here (direct breath into the back of your lower ribs, and to the sides). #3 press stronger with your hands down and push yourself to the back to sit on your heels #4 "hug" the ball and take 3 calm umbrella breaths using front, sides and back of your ribcage. And repeat. Disclaimer: this is information only and use it as information only. It is not an advice and should not substitute any medical or professional advice. #dancewellness #hypermobiledancers #bendybodies #Danceconditioning #dancephysio
20.01.2022 Which muscles do you use to turnout your legs? . Muscles at the front of your hip? Muscles of your inner thigh? Have you been clenching your bottom to hold your turnout?... . Have you heard of Deep External Rotators (DER) of the hip joint? These are 6 little muscles deep at the back of your hip - kinda along your leotard line. And these little muscles rotate your thigh bone outwardly to create turned out position. Very commonly dancers use compensatory strategies and turnout their legs using hip flexors and gluts. Such pattern creates more tighness around hips and restricts the range and control of turnout. Finding, Activating and Strengthening of the DER will offload your hip flexors and gluts and make them more available for the tasks they are designed for. Also, using appropriate muscles will reduce tension and tightness around your hips created by overusing hip flexors. Changing the way you recruit your muscles and teach them to activate for the appropriate tasks will create a lot of freedom and ease for your turnout. In photo - simple exercise to activate Quadratus Femoris (QF), one of the DER. How to do it: > in 4-point kneeling positing with band around your ankle and attached to something stable have your foot out to the side. You should have almost no or very little tension on the band > slide your foot in pivoting on your knee like a windshield wiper > watch out for any tension in your hip flexors or gripping of your bottom. Stop every time these want to kick in and let go of the tension in them. > keep pelvis still > at the beginning, you are working on connection between your brain and the muscle so high number of repetitions is beneficial. > for details on how to do it and whether this exercises is suitable for you - reach out to a professional disclaimer: this post is for information purposes only. It is not to serve as medical advice or treatment of your condition. If in doubt, seek medical advice.
17.01.2022 Reminiscing about the amazing time I had last year in Queensland Ballet's Performance Medicine Department being mentored by Zara Gomes. Continuous development is essential not only for health professionals but for dancers too. If you are serious about your dance career, spend time on educating yourself, getting experience and knowledge from different sources, from different angles. Having broader perspective opens more doors...... QB is having Mind.Body.Ballet workshop for dancers and parents in 2 week's time (Sunday 27th of September). Check their website for details and go.
16.01.2022 It is all about paying attention to your body. Dance injuries may not be driven by the same body part. Foot injury may for example be driven by a jaw. This exercise is a high level hip stability sequence. Working on controlling femoral head in hip socket and also reducing tension in jaw helps, in this case, with stability of the ankle. ... Disclaimer: this is an example only, please do not use this video/exercise as an advice and/or treatment of your injury. 16.01.2022 To get rid of a disease (read injury for this purpose), a body needs to become a hostile environment to the disease - I heard once from a medical professional. In other words: When dealing with an injury a change is needed.... Continuing dancing or training with the same patterns, the same technique, the same strength or lack thereof, will hinder healing and recovery and the injury will return or persist. In dance, majority of injuries are of chronic nature. This means, they have been building up slowly, unnoticed at first, usually in a domino effect pattern, as a result of many factors which could include: having a history of an injury, faulty technique, poor strength, over or undertraining, quality of flooring and more. Don't be afraid of the change, don't be afraid of becoming different to your current self, don't be afraid of taking the time to do it - you will come out of it stronger and better. #injuryprevention #injuryrecovery #injuryrehab #dance #danceinjuryprevention #danceinjuryrehab #ballet #dancephysio #dancemedicine #change

14.01.2022 #danceinjuries are mainly chronic. Think of them as a bucket which is being filled gradually with single drops . one drop of water is so small and not very powerful, you can barely see it in the bucket, you can barely feel it when it touches your skin . 3 millions of drops together will fill the bucket full, it is now heavy, very wet, you could even drown in it... . dancing with one drop on your skin feels easy, unnoticed, it doesn't weigh you down or stop you . dancing with a bucket full of water is heavy, very noticeable, restraining, uncomfortable, even undoable . every single drop of water is a micro injury, a fault in your biomechanics (the way you move and place technique), a tiny strain to your muscle, little twinge, feeling of pressure, restriction, and so on . every time you are training and dancing with faults in your technique you add another drop to your bucket. 3 million drops is a lot, right? Maybe by the time they fill up the bucket they will magically disappear?.. Wishful thinking. . The thing is that to stop the bucket get full, you need to dry the drops out. You need to get rid of faults in your technique, you need to use your body in a correct way, align it well, activate the proper muscles at a proper time and for the appropriate tasks. . Pay attention to your body and any signs of the falling drops and act on it. Get assessed. Don't wait! Go to see a #dancephysio, a true detective, who knows dance technique and specificity of #danceinjuries and will be able to pin down your issues and help with appropriate improvements. See more

10.01.2022 When thinking of improving technique or when rehabbing from a dance injury, pay attention to your standing leg. It is your base. Performance of your gesturing leg depends on it, performance of your upper body depends on it. Make it biomechanically efficient, stable and strong. #danceinjuries #dancerehab #dancephysio #dancemedicine Dancer: @xanthe.pheeney

07.01.2022 GET READY FOR 2021 Is Pointe assessment important? 3 reasons why pointe work is unnatural for human beings and we need to specifically and carefully train our body to do it... it requires very high technical skills which are very difficult to be assessed during a class every dancer is unique and has different anatomy, make up and abilities and therefore requires individual approach and assessment If you are thinking of starting pointe work soon or next year, contact Tempo Physiotherapy now to book your individual, highly specialised assessment with Physiotherapist for Dancers. [email protected] 07 5664 6710 And if you think of dance as your career, you can enrol to a specialised one-on-one coaching for pointe readiness where we take info from your assessment and train your pointe readiness with respect to your individuality - as making you stable en pointe may require different exercise and focus on a different body parts than your dancer friend. 03.01.2022 What is your big toe range? . If you feel like you are sitting behind your ankles when on demi pointe, or like you need to work harder to straighten your knees, or if you fall out of pirouettes, check if you have sufficient range in your big toes. . Do not compromise your technique ... . It is a waste of energy which could be used for feeling and looking flawless when dancing. #dancephysio #dancetechnique #ballet #demipointe #bigtoe #dancerehab #dance
02.01.2022 GET BACK ON TOP Sending the appropriate messages over and over again is crucial. Especially in times of social media where unfiltered information, advice and dodgy standards are flooding young people. Now more than ever our young dancers need us - professionals, parents, adults - to point them in the right direction with the right information. This evening, I was welcomed at @noosahouseofdance by group of amazing young people who love to dance. And their teachers/school d...irectors love their students to be the best, to be on top of the game and to be safe. The workshop GET BACK ON TOP was an invitation to explore own technique, an introduction to self assessment, to understanding of own body and principles of injury prevention. My quest to increase safe dance practices at dance studios continues. ONE BY ONE.
