Here is truth about wax and why we at Temptress BBH always use 100% Soy Vegetable Wax! Paraffin Wax: Paraffin is probably the most common material for mass market candles simply for its price. You will find this in large retail giants and some MLM companies. Only recently there has been a lot of research done uncovering that with its low price comes a lot of downsides... to your health and environment. Paraffin comes from the sludge the bottom of crude oil barrels. While it inherently contains a lot of toxins, it's further bleached to get its initial white color and treated with chemicals like benzene and toluene, which are known carcinogens. Paraffin candles are further treated with artificial colors and fragrances. As the final byproduct of petroleum, paraffin is a non-renewable resource that releases pollutants into the area. Paraffin candles are known to contain seven documented toxins, two of which are tagged as carcinogenic. While it is cheap to acquire, paraffin candles can be difficult to clean when melted and can stain black soot on ceilings, walls, drapery, and furniture. These cosmetic and health issues should be reason enough to hold on to your hard-earned cash and find a candle option that isn’t slowly poisoning your home. Soy Wax: Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. The beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes. The oil is extracted and hydrogenated. This is where the fatty acids are converted from unsaturated to saturated. The resulting wax is soft and burns well, but needs to be in containers as it is too soft to stand on its own as a pillar or votive unless you add a hardening additive. When soy wax burns, it releases no toxins, no carcinogens and no pollutants. This is because it is a soft the wax burns at a cooler temperature meaning they tend to last longer than paraffin candles, up to 50% longer in some cases. The wax is safe to have on your skin, and if no additives are included, it isn’t even toxic to eat. Soy wax also interacts well with fragrant oils meaning that they don’t release the same levels of soot when they burn. The more pure your fragrance oils, the safer this part of the process is. Given that a good quality candle can cost a lot more then a very cheap candle could set you back a mere $2, it is actually about weighing up the cost of your health for this one. It is worth noting that some candle companies do use a wax blend. This is a blend wax rather than 100% Soy Wax which typically uses paraffin with just a hint of soy. So it is definitely worth checking if your candles contains any paraffin or it is made use 100% soy wax or other non-toxic wax such as beeswax or coconut wax.
