25.01.2022 A wonderful storytime at Newcastle Libraries

25.01.2022 The more you talk with your baby and respond to their noises and babbles, the more you help them learn to communicate. Talking to your child can fit easily into your daily routine. Why not: 1 - Recite a nursery rhyme while feeding your baby 2 - Talk about the things you see while you are out and about 3 - Describe what you are buying while you are in the shop... 4 - Sing songs while you are bathing your baby 5 - Share a book with your child before bedtime See more

24.01.2022 How many finger play songs do you know? Finger plays help children develop muscle strength and coordination in their fingers, which helps them learn to write and draw later on.

24.01.2022 Follow your babys lead to make reading time a positive experience. She may even like to just mouth the book, instead of read it!

23.01.2022 Have you checked out the toddler programs on offer at your local library? These free programs encourage listening, social interaction, vocabulary and fun, with music, dance, rhymes and songs.

22.01.2022 Singing songs and rhymes with your baby is not only fun, but the rhythms and repetition make it easier for babies to learn language skills. So sing away!

22.01.2022 Dads - talk to your baby. Gazing directly into his eyes, talking to him and waiting for his responses, stimulates your babys brain, helping to strengthen the connections that make learning possible.

20.01.2022 Does your child have their own library card?

17.01.2022 Language building can happen as part of your normal routine. Doing some DIY on the weekend? Talk to your child about the different tools youre using and involve them as much as possible in the activity.

17.01.2022 Spring is yet to arrive, and its a perfect time to snuggle up with a good book. Share your favourite fireside book with us.

16.01.2022 Another fantastic story time from Newcastle Libraries to enjoy at home.

16.01.2022 Something special coming up to celebrate Childrens Book Week.

15.01.2022 Let your baby read her own way. Your baby may only sit still for a few pages, turn the pages quickly or only want to look at one picture and then be done, THATS OK.

12.01.2022 #Saturdaysorted free books, a chance to support Got Your Back Sista and munch on a sausage sanger at Wallsend Library from 9.30am to 2.00pm

12.01.2022 This could be a good reason to speak baby talk to your child.

12.01.2022 Toddlers and screen time. Heres a great tip from Zero to Three. Help your child make the connection between what she sees on a screen and the real world. Play games with her afterward using objects similar to what she has seen on the device, such as blocks or a ball. Point out and label objects in real life that she has seen on TV or on touchscreens, such as animals and flowers.

12.01.2022 Its easy to encourage literacy development with toddlers. All you need to do is chat with them! Research has found that the more parents talk with their children, the larger vocabularies those children develop. These children also use more advanced sentence structures. So chatting with your toddlerin the car, at the playground, during bath timeis very important.

12.01.2022 How much technology should I allow my child? Remember, you are still the best person for your child to learn from and technology works best when you and your child play together using it, just like a book. Your child still needs to see and hear you explaining and doing things so they can understand how to do it themselves.

12.01.2022 Did you know that using parentese - the high-pitched tone of voice, simple sentences, and stretched out vowels (hiiii, bayyybeeee!) - helps babies learn how language works? PRI Public Radio International has more details about the science behind this concept: http://bit.ly/2zQUtTY.

12.01.2022 Are stories a part of your bedtime routine? Its never too late to start. Look out for books where they can become involved; those with lots of repetition are perfect! The more your child is involved in the story, the more likely they are to develop and sustain a love of books and reading.

11.01.2022 This week is Book Week and were giving special mention to the charities and community groups that make the joy of reading accessible to everyone, especially ch...ildren in regional and remote areas. Over the last 10 years weve supported groups including Books in Homes Australia, Aboriginal Literacy Foundation, Ten Minutes A Day and Dungog Shire Community Centre with over $500,000 in grants for childhood reading and literacy programs in regional NSW. #bookweek See more

10.01.2022 Repeat, repeat, repeat. Children learn through repetition because it gives them many chances to figure things out. So read that story one more time!

10.01.2022 Something to put a smile on your face...

09.01.2022 If you have Treehouse fans in your house, check out The Many Story Treehouse exhibition on at Lovett Gallery above Newcastle Region Library. 08.01.2022 Babies love books that they can relate to. Look out for books with clear illustrations or photos of other babies. These are some of our favourites.

08.01.2022 Use new words when you talk with your toddler. A snack can be many things: good, healthy, yummy, crunchy, round, etc. Talk about what you are doing (I have to wipe the crumbs off the table) and about what you see your child doing (You are knocking down your block tower. Watch it go boom

06.01.2022 Its Book Week and Australia wide libraries and schools are celebrating the very best of Australian childrens literature. Young children have been enjoying Go home cheeky animals, the winner of the Young Readers category; a delightful interactive story. Look for it at your local library.

04.01.2022 To me, libraries are no longer places to just quietly read or borrow books. Theyre places for the community to gather, collaborate, learn, study and enrich the...ir lives. Today, I was proud to re-open the newly re-furbished Newcastle Regional Library City branch on behalf of the people Newcastle, and to mark 60 years since the opening of the iconic War Memorial Cultural Centre building. Weve invested $1.3 million into transforming the library into a state-of-the-art community facility, including a digital makerspace where visitors can learn more about cutting-edge technology like 3D printing. Modernising our libraries is one of my priorities as Lord Mayor so its fantastic to see this incredible upgrade delivered for the people of Newcastle, and I look forward to continuing to modernise our libraries right across the City. To celebrate this awesome occasion for Newcastle, a weekend of fabulous events has been prepared by our fantastic Library staff. 04.01.2022 Read to your child, but also pay attention to how they are reacting. Stop if they arent enjoying the story and try another book or another time. Books dont have to be finished

04.01.2022 The benefits of reading ten minutes a day #tenminutesaday

03.01.2022 Want to support your babys growing language and literacy skills? Read with gusto, using different voices for different characters in the stories you read. Babies love when adults are silly and it makes book reading even more fun.

03.01.2022 Nursery Rhymes may be old fashioned but they arent out of date. Heres why you should keep on singing... http://first5forever.org.au/6-nursery-rhymes-your-little-o/ What are your favourites?

02.01.2022 BOOK WEEK 2020 postponed From Sarah Mayor Cox on behalf of CBCA National... Due to the unprecedented lock down of so many communities and institutions, the CBCA... National Board is postponing CBCA Book Week until term 4 2020, so that we will all be able to celebrate it in person, rather than virtually. Although we were very sad that the wonderful announcement event planned by the SA CBCA Branch was not able to be held at their Zoo, Im sure youll agree the digital Shortlist announcement was very engaging. However, we really want Book Week 2020 to go ahead in a way that celebrates our wonderful creators and their books and provides the chance to celebrate together in person, with parades, story times, author/illustrator visits, displays and all the other wonderful events you organise. We will announce the new date very soon and when we do we will let everyone know. We are really excited that in such dire circumstances, bringing readers and creators together when this is over will be a wonderful and well-deserved celebration. Our special CBCA Book Week merchandise will be available then too. And next year, when everything back to normal, CBCA Book Week will go ahead, as usual, in the fourth week of August. In the meantime, please feel free to contact the CBCA office via Kate Flamsteed our National Executive Officer [ [email protected]

01.01.2022 How much screen time? The research is clear: Children learn better and more efficiently from play and interaction in the real, three-dimensional (3-D) world with parents, caregivers, and peers. Set limits so that your child has ample time to explore their real world with you, their caregivers, and peers. [Zero to Three, USA]
