23.01.2022 I dont have a favourite. I have six kids and love them all. ButI have one daughter who, of all my children, is just fun. She not only excels at having fun but... shes also exceptionally fun to be with. Shes always made friends easily and well at school, in the neighbourhood, and even on the playground when she was little. People just love her. Ive always believed she was going to have a great life because of her incredible attitude. But theres never been much research done on the value of being fun until now. And the research says, being fun is actually really important. Read more on the blog - https://www.happyfamilies.com.au//are-your-kids-fun-it-ma/ .

23.01.2022 Rather than question the linked information in terms of deciding whether or not I should be continuing face-to-face tutoring, I have decided to err on the side of caution and have immediately suspended all in-person tutoring sessions until May 19th, unless the government directs otherwise. A Skype account has been set up for students to continue sessions online, with parental supervision. However, if this is not feasible, whether due to cost or connectivity issues, then feel ...free to postpone your booked tutoring sessions. I understand that this is a stressful time for everyone. I have pursued all possible avenues with Skype being the most user-friendly option. I apologise if this adds undue stress to an already tension-filled day. See more

22.01.2022 It's so satisfying when a jigsaw puzzle is completed.

20.01.2022 While this is aimed at students in the northern hemisphere, the material covered is something that all people could benefit from, both parents and children alike. The link to the Secondary Pack is in the comments.

19.01.2022 Students who have had tutoring sessions via Skype all have declared the same thing: they miss Mort.

18.01.2022 Free on Kindle today:

17.01.2022 I'm aware that some parents work in industries where they may be experiencing lower productivity, or in some cases, have not been able to work due to businesses closing as per the government's directive. With this in mind, it would be wise to use common sense and to save your money, rather than try to continue tutoring sessions online. I'm more than happy to check assignment drafts via email (for current students only) as this is part of the services that I offer. Checking of drafts will not incur a fee. So if you are stressed about the coming weeks and months, then don't hesitate to postpone tutoring sessions if you need to. Your financial well-being is just as important as your physical well-being.

09.01.2022 Today I received a delivery of a personalised hamper. The wrapping was top notch! So many goodies. Where to begin...

09.01.2022 There is so much fear and panic around parenting correctly. So many of us worry that we will 'spoil' our children or that we might be 'letting them get away wit...h it' or that we aren't exercising enough authority or discipline or taking control. Bloody hell. Sounds a lot like we're raising evil little opportunistic monsters, ready to take advantage at any given moment in their pursuit to destroy us all and take over the planet. Why are we so afraid of children? Why are we so sure that what we want for our children is right for them? In reality, we have the right and the freedom to enjoy our children. To learn from them, to bask in their freedom of expression without jumping on their every move. Co-sleeping, cuddling our babies when they're distressed, not forcing our children to finish their food is all okay. I promise. Tuning OUT in order to tune IN is profoundly important. If we let go of everybody else's ideas and belief systems around how we should parent our children and just be present with ourselves, and our children, We get to enjoy them NOW, rather than being consistently panicked about who they will be in twenty years and what values they will or won't have if they don't eat all their vegetables or say please and thank you. During this time, in lockdown, so many parents are centred on their children 'falling behind' in their formalised learning. Fear not. The human brain doesn't stop learning when we take a break or if adults other than educators deliver their curriculum. Adults learn entire curriculums and expertise after being disengaged from formal learning for decades when they return to university or vocational learning. Our brains never stop learning. Our children will not suddenly develop an incapacity to take in information if they're not at school for a while. They will, however, be prevented from being able to engage with learning where their brain is wired for alert. Where their threat response is overactive, where they are anxious, where they're experiencing pressure or taking on our panic and stress. We are in a position of now being educators, engaging with remote learning, and doing as we were already doing..working, daily routine and chores, parenting. Let's be gentle with ourselves and our children. Parenting from the space of fear is the pits. It interferes with the most important thing of all - our connection with our children. For our children, love and safety - a soft place to fall is paramount to their wellbeing. And please, let's remember that we are all different and we all need different things to thrive. Numeracy and literacy is but one part of a huge picture that is life. We are all doing the best we can and that is more than enough. Wellbeing first.

09.01.2022 Time and time again a student asks where I gain my knowledge of words. "How do you know so many rhymes?" "How did you guess what that word meant?" "Where do you learn so many words?"... Every single time I answer with this: "I read." It doesn't matter what the student reads, it's the opportunity for an increased vocabulary, the repetition of sentences, grammar use, punctuation, and paragraph structure. The written word, when read at a leisurely pace (and not forced upon a student) can bring wonder and delight. It's no longer the recognition of nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions, and so on. It's the flow of a good story, or a piece of interesting information. It sparks the imagination and cues into creativity. The mind creates the special effects for scenes that are not of this world. But where to start? What book to read? A magazine, a comic, a 'chapter book'? Is there such a thing as the right book? The challenge lies in finding 'that book' that starts the reading craze. Public and school libraries are perfect for trying different things. Just because a book has been borrowed, doesn't mean that it needs to be read from cover to cover. Start with what the student loves to read, then over time, put forward the challenge to read something different, something that isn't met with initial enthusiasm. Whatever it is, as long as there is a regular time for reading, then there can only be improvement.

04.01.2022 While this focuses primarily on the negative side of teaching, this book covers every aspect involved in the profession. Warning: you may feel exhausted after reading this book. However, I would see this as a tome necessary in relaying the constant struggles of a teacher, and that most of them people will never see.
