25.01.2022 It's quite a long quote, but in this Human Rights Month, it's worth the time to reflect on Eleanor Roosevelt's thoughts from 1958 on human rights and their place in the world.
25.01.2022 ....if you're in Brisbane and need a little support, read the message below. Thanks for helping our communities Hope on Boundary Café
24.01.2022 If you have been struggling to pay your rent since the eviction moratorium ended, make sure that you seek assistance from a financial counsellor as early as possible. There are lots of free options available at Financial Counsellor's Association of Queensland https://www.abc.net.au//jobkeeper-jobseeker-sees-/12843610
23.01.2022 More amazing news out of Victoria, with today's announcement of new minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties. We really need the Queensland Government to follow suit. What do you think Leeanne Enoch MP and Annastacia Palaszczuk MP ? http://rebrand.ly/qosnq
22.01.2022 We had a great day yesterday with our partners Community Plus+ Yeronga Community Centre at Wynnum Community Connect, celebrating Social Inclusion Week. The event was put on by Safe by the Bay - Wynnum Community Meals and was a wonderful chance to engage with the local community.
21.01.2022 Did you know that the State Government has lots of tools available to assist renters, including financial assistance through Bond Loans and Rental Grants, and RentConnect which provides assistance to find and apply for a property? 19.01.2022 Some fascinating insights into share houses in the age of COVID from News Breakfast. What have your experiences been like? https://www.abc.net.au//share-house-accommodation/12806264
18.01.2022 Because we know that tenancy problems don't always respect the holiday season, we're open today, tomorrow and Thursday (Dec 31) from 9am-5pm. In fact, we're open ALL business days that are not public holidays! Call us on 1300 744263 if you need tenancy advice.
18.01.2022 Today is Raise the Rate National Day of Action. Raise The Rate For Good has a vision to ensure everyone can cover the basics by fixing our income support safety net - people cannot live on $40 a day. You can play your part to help drive home the message that the proposed cuts to supports will jeopardise the ability of those doing it tough, to keep a roof over their heads. Sign up here http://rebrand.ly/1yxuf and follow the suggestions for actions to take today!
17.01.2022 Rents are becoming unaffordable in many regional centres. Are you struggling to find a suitable rental at the right price? https://www.domain.com.au//rents-fall-but-are-still-unaff/
17.01.2022 Although a happy time for a lot people, there will be some who struggle at this time of year. If you feel that you need support over the holiday period, the team at Community Door have put together this list of organisations you can turn to.
16.01.2022 Here's hoping that the new year brings everyone much joy, and importantly, safe and secure homes for all.
16.01.2022 We want to congratulate the Vic gov on their announcement yesterday to deliver 12,000 social housing properties over the next 4 years. The absence of leadership from the Commonwealth government on this issue is devastating. Why aren't we seeing a countrywide stimulus package aimed at delivery social housing, creating jobs and homes? https://www.abc.net.au//victorian-government-anno/12884962
15.01.2022 A nice story about housing organisation Coast2Bay Housing Group helping a family of 3 to find an affordable rental home on the Sunshine Coast, just in time! http://rebrand.ly/ricbzmu
15.01.2022 With the number of available rental properties continuing to shrink across the state, we will find more people needing to turn to community organisations for assistance in order to keep a roof over their heads! https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//can-t-rent-a-footlocker-
14.01.2022 Just over 5 years ago, Leeanne Enoch MP announced the restoration of tenancy advice and advocacy services in Queensland. We congratulate the Minister on the announcement of her new role as Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts, and look forward to working together on making renting fair in Queensland.
14.01.2022 We are celebrating NAIDOC Week at Tenants Queensland this week. Did you know that we have a whole series of Indigenous Tenancy Fact Sheets and Videos? You can find them here: http://rebrand.ly/m8a63
14.01.2022 No, this isn't a piece of modern art! As a nurse this tenant was acutely aware of the respiratory health risks she faced living in a mould infested unit. After multiple emails to the agent, the tenant breached her lessor and finally had to terminate her tenancy when her lessor failed to do repairs to address the mould issue. This is why the #makerentingfairqld campaign is so important - we want basic standards enforced for all rental homes. Have you experienced anything like this photo?
12.01.2022 At last week's TQ AGM, one of our Advice Workers, Amy, gave the audience an overview of the challenges of providing up-to-date and effective advice to tenants during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During a period of such significant and rapid change, Amy and the rest of the TQ team provided an outstanding service, and we thank them for it!
10.01.2022 With the election now out of the way, it is time for the state government to get real about tenancy law reforms. What do you think? http://rebrand.ly/bmaxj
10.01.2022 Tenants Queensland CEO, Penny Carr, spoke with ABC Sunshine Coast this morning about how difficult it is proving to find suitable rental properties. We have heard of up to 85 applications being made for a single rental property! https://www.abc.net.au//sunshine-coast-rental-dem/12894810
10.01.2022 Interstate migration to places like the Sunshine Coast is leading to renters applying for properties sight unseen, and difficulties in finding appropriate schooling options for children. https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//covid-19-the-catalyst-fo
10.01.2022 Newly released data shows over 47,000 people on the waiting list for social housing at June 2020 - a 24% increase on the same snapshot in 2019! https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//privacy-blamed-for-delay
08.01.2022 With International Human Rights Day on tomorrow it's interesting to note that there is no right to housing under the Human Rights Act. However it is heartening to see the Queensland Human Rights Commission engaging with housing providers on implementing the Act.
05.01.2022 Unfortunately with very few rental options available, some people in Hervey Bay have had to resort to starting a mini ‘tent city’ near the community centre. Community organisations are aware of the situation and are working with the government on solutions, and looking at other options that might be available.
02.01.2022 Brigid Delaney writes in the The Guardian on the pandemic having no impact on the lack of affordable housing - in fact quite the opposite has occurred. http://rebrand.ly/z6oad26
01.01.2022 Channel 7 followed up on our earlier post about the mini 'tent city' in Hervey Bay.
