23.01.2022 Renters who lost their jobs or hours have shouldered great burdens in a tough year for us all. (This week's) Victorian Budget announcements, with their focus on jobs and housing, offer a framework of hope as the state mounts its recovery into 2021 We sincerely hope the Federal Government will come to see the wisdom and social dividends in also investing in safe, secure and affordable housing for the post-pandemic world. With the announcement of the State government’s budget yesterday our CEO, Jennifer Beveridge was optimistic about the commitment to social housing.
22.01.2022 "COVID-19 gives us the chance to say, ‘what housing system do we want to see?’ (and) provide housing of a good standard that allows people to live healthy and productive lives". The report declared delivering more secure and affordable housing was fundamental to the nation’s post-COVID economic recovery. At Tenants Victoria, we 100% endorse these comments. See below for Herald Sun's (realestate.com.au) coverage of the AHURi report.
21.01.2022 The director [of] Consumer Affairs Victoria has sought assurance from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria that it is not advising estate agents and their representatives to breach their legal obligations, and will consider if further action is required. We have heard from tenants about the challenges they've had in dealing with some real estate agents during COVID19, and we're aware of people experiencing difficulty progressing their rent reductions. Remember the Victoria...n Government has extended rental protections until March 2021 for those facing financial hardship. You have the right as a renter to seek a rent reduction. If you don’t hear from the landlord or real estate agent within a week, step it up to Consumer Affairs Victoria. Stay safe everyone. We'll make sure to keep you up to date with the latest tenancy news as it happens. https://www.domain.com.au//reiv-calls-to-strike-on-rent-n/

02.01.2022 Dear renters of Victoria (there are 2 million of you ), We know that staying safe in your rented home is also about protecting public health. Many of you who have lost jobs and/or hours are facing challenging financial times under the restrictions and lockdowns from COVID-19. You don't have to bear this alone.... Victoria has rental protections in place until March 2021. The scheme for renters encourages people to seek rent reductions, and there are incentives for both tenants AND landlords to have 'good faith'-fair-go-negotiations. If the tenant is granted a rent reduction, the landlord can also benefit from land tax concessions. A rent relief grant of up to $3000 for eligible tenants facing hardship, is also directly paid to the landlord towards the reduced rent. If you've sent a letter to your landlord, make sure you don't wait more than a week for a response. Here's a handy resource to help lead you through the step-by-step process: https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au//work-out-how-much-rent-yo Stay safe everyone. #Covid19Vic Victorian Council of Social Service
