06.01.2022 To my valued customers, Tender Cut Meats will be closed this Wednesday 30th November, to attend the funeral of my father Fons, who sadly passed away last week. Rod Den Elzen

06.01.2022 Fons Den Elzen 4/02/45 ~ 23/11/16 Today we lay Dad to rest, but before that I'd like to share our story, as Den Elzen butchers. Dad was the second youngest of 16 children, who migrated to Australia when he was 7. His father Leo, was a butcher and had been running his own shop in Holland.... After their arrival here, his father started a butcher shop in Melbourne. Dad left school at the age of 14 and started working in the shop along side his Dad. Four of his older brothers had also became butchers. In 1975, Dad arrived in Mackay with his family of 5 children. We were in the middle of travelling around Australia, but never left Mackay. Not long after, he started his first butcher shop here. This shop was located in Finch St, Slade Point. He ran this shop for 7 years before selling and shifting the family back to Victoria. All of us kids weren't happy with the decision and after 6 weeks we returned back to Mackay. As soon as we arrived arrived back, Dad purchased an existing butcher shop where Tender Cut Meats is today, in North Mackay. This was January 9, 1984 and was the day I started my own butchering career. Approximately 1 year later , Dad went back into his old shop at Slade Point. My younger brother Steph, who was also a butcher worked with Dad in the Slade Point shop. After 5 successful years in both shops, he decided to sell up. I had been managing Fons Den Elzen's-Tender Cut Meats and in order keep a job, I purchased the North Mackay shop off Dad. Dad went on to purchase the butcher shop at Bucasia shopping centre, which he sold 18 months later. For the next few years, he worked his own hours for me at Tender Cut Meats, until fully retiring from the butcher trade. I have now been in this shop for over 32 years. My son Craig has worked beside me for the past 14 years. My youngest son Luke is also doing his apprenticeship with me. They are the forth generation of Den Elzen butchers. Dad was a hard worker and always proud of his butcher shops. He taught me everything I know, which I've now passed on to my boys. He was very proud of us as Den Elzen butchers. Rest in peace Dad. I'll 'meat' you up there some day x
