23.01.2022 To my friends. The artists. Remember We are made for this. From those days with highest hopes but no money. When we spent all our energy on impossible enterpris...es. Fashioning new works from thin air and friendship. We built our muscles then. We fed on laughter. We washed filthy floors that became rehearsal space. We auditioned unknown names in unnamed halls. We shared one coffee between four. We know how to do this. Remember how we volunteered (or were roped in) to act, to paint, to sing, to film. To create something. We have never been a part of the huge turning wheel. We have cogs in place to spin a wheel of beauty and keep it turning. The labours of love and sweat, of endurance and joy were impossible aspirations set in motion by dreams. Held up by community. Our community. We know how to do this. Sharing what we have, seeing where need is, adjusting our eyes to what is just in front of us. Making it, making do. Imagining what is possible. And forging the forever friendships that emerge from love and struggle. And art. We are built for this. We just have to remember where we have come from. We will be ok. Even with very little. We know how to Look after each other. See more

22.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

22.01.2022 "Podcast #01 End Notes: Stories of Death with Carol Leen Huish. Join us in a conversation with End of Life Doula Nicolette Smith, as we explore how to care for our own and build death literacy in our community."

21.01.2022 We are so excited to share this campaign, Tender is growing. Please support and share if you are able. Every community deserves a Tender.

20.01.2022 Tender Funerals has gone National... "What is apparent is you can change culture within one funeral. Once people have that experience they don't want another. It is affordable, it is fair and the process is transparent. https://www.smh.com.au//affordable-and-fair-funerals-with-

20.01.2022 Our Kiama and Gerringong communities are in the grips of huge loss in their community with a spike in young people ending their lives. Today on International Youth Day we tied a yellow ribbon outside our building to symbolise the hope we have for our youths future and to show our support in line with these communities working to show their youth they care about them. If you see a yellow ribbon out in the community then be reminded you are important and your life is value...d. Its an invitation to reach out if you are not okay. Lifeline: 13 11 14 #gezzacares

19.01.2022 At this time of social distancing we are doing a lot of creative thinking about ways that we can connect and honour our dead. Pia Interlandi has recorded this video full of great ideas on Creative Rituals for Death in times of COVID-19 There are some really helpful rituals in here. Lets think about what else we can do right now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHET_Q5fok4

19.01.2022 R U OK? Day is today! You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener. Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:... 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen 3. Encourage action 4. Check in Here are some things you could say in conversation with someone who answers "No, I'm not okay"

18.01.2022 Our funeral director Amy Sagar was interviewed on Perth ABC radio this morning. 18.01.2022 Funerals look different at the moment with the limit of 10 people. We have been working to create meaningful practises for families to say goodbye. Just a few of our ideas are mentioned here: https://www.choice.com.au//restricted-funerals-during-covi

17.01.2022 Have you heard about the Compassionate Community workshop running in Kiama next week? The conversation is focussed on End of Life, loss and grief in the Kiama Community. A Compassionate Community is a community that recognises and cares for one another in times of crisis & loss. It is not simple a task for health and social services, but is everyones responsibility.

15.01.2022 Poetry is an ancient, fundamental, human form of expression. You can find a special poem to read at your persons funeral ceremony, or you can write a few words to express your love. Here is a poem by the ancient Persian mystic poet Rumi. Poems can be placed with your person inside the coffin.

10.01.2022 The Illawarra traditionally belonged to the Wadi-Wadi Coomaditchie people as part of the Dharrawal Nation. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. Our work with the indigenous community here is part of our most sacred work. #NAIDOC2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe

10.01.2022 It has been so heartwarming to receive all of these messages from our community. We have felt so surround in love from afar during this Covid birthday. Here is the extended version of the birthday messages sent to us. Funeral Tip: If you can't be physically present at a funeral ceremony during Covid sending a video eulogy can be a great way to still be involved in the funeral

09.01.2022 Ritual is important, including the ritual of getting a birthday wish despite dieting. Happy Birthday and welcome to our new funeral director Christine Costello. 09.01.2022 These are some of the embroideries made by our Sewing Circle for the ’Sunflowers and Sage Leaves’ quilt project. We are starting to piece them together. At the moment we can only take 6 people, with social distancing. Hopefully as restrictions are lifted, we may be able to increase that.

08.01.2022 Here is a story I wrote about a an incredibly helpful, compassionate, smart and fearless member of our community, Jenny Briscoe-Hough. I can see you blushing now Jenny! Just go with it! Love you

08.01.2022 In these times of social distancing, there are simple rituals we can do to celebrate and honour our loved ones. You can plant a tree to keep their spirit alive in another form. Encourage the children to be involved so it will become a cherished memory.

07.01.2022 Tender Funerals featured on page 46 of this seasons issue of Coal Coast Mag. Have a look at what we have been up to here: https://www.coalcoastmagazine.com/issues

06.01.2022 I cannot recommend Tender Funerals Illawarra and Sydney - A Community Undertaking enough!!! Tender lets you tailor your loved one's funeral to be personal and r...espectful. For example, for my son's funeral we had our Indigenous family friend do a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony and cleansing. And we had Wiccan prayers and blessings read. Nik's friends (16 year old at the time) carried Nik up in his seagrass woven casket, and had a skate board procession at the end. When the Bear Cottage social worker called several funeral services to get a quote and see if they could include my ideas, most of them said there was a set price and set program. No negotiating. All way more expensive than Tender Funerals. Nik also ended up with 2 funerals in one day - a traditional Catholic church funeral at Port Kembla that my birth giver wanted; and the one I organised at The Bombi (because Nik loved the beach; and it was a beautiful location between the mountain and Coledale beach). I don't think any other funeral service would accommodate us to have 2 funerals! Don't get ripped off by other funeral services. Go with Tender and honour your loved ones in the most loving, personal way Link is one NOT to go with!!!

05.01.2022 Tender can empower you to make an informed decision about what options are available and best suited to you. We offer cremation and burial, ceremonial washing and dressing, viewings, funerals in a range of locations and private practical cremation. To read more about our services you can go on our website: https://www.tenderfunerals.org/what-we-offer

04.01.2022 Here is our 'Songs of Love and Remembrance' album by the Tender Community Choir, now up on Soundcloud. Enjoy! It was made with lots of love. https://soundcloud.com/user-//tender-community-choir-songs

04.01.2022 In these times of self isolation and limits on large gatherings we will be providing opportunities for communities to dial into funeral ceremonies so that they can still participate and be connected to a rite of passage. Lets work to remain connected as we farewell our people instead of exclusion. We are focusing on how we can serve our isolated community members so that everyones bereavement needs are met in this delicate time.

04.01.2022 Happy Diwali from our community to yours

03.01.2022 A candle vigil is a great way to pay tribute to someone, especially if you are in isolation and can't make it to a funeral ceremony. A candle can be lit at home in tribute to that person as memories of them are reflected on. You could even share a photo of your candle vigil with others in that community. Lets unite in this time, even if we can't all physically be together

03.01.2022 Would you like to hear us speak at the upcoming Death Cafe? Secure your booking now as spots are limited. We look forward to enjoying a cup of tea a chat with you
