17.01.2022 New technology offers non-invasive method for early oral cancer detection A research project led by the University of Melbourne’s team at The Melbourne Dental School is working with Victorian company Optiscan to improve screening and early cancer diagnosis of oral cancer. In an article published on the eve of World Head and Neck Cancer Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness of head and neck cancer, and the importance of its early detection in ensuring optimal health o...utcomes, Dr Tami Yap and Professor Michael McCullough detail the way in which the project offers a way to visually examine the mouth for cancer without the need for a surgical biopsy. It notes that early detection of oral cancer is critical since many people are diagnosed at an advanced stage of progression, a situation which means that the five-year mortality rate for people with the disease is approximately 50 per cent. While dentists play a crucial role in early detection of oral cancer, the article notes that increasing diagnosis rates at early stages of the disease is complicated by "the limited tools to detect and monitor potential oral cancers and skin lesions over time [which] forces clinicians to remove suspicious lesions by scalpel biopsy and assess pathology." The project aims to identify those most at risk of developing oral cancer by using laser light and confocal optics to perform digital biopsies using Optiscan’s InVivage TM technology, which utilises a hand-held state-of-the-art confocal laser endomicroscope. It is hoped that the technology will help the research team to assess the tissue and determine if a biopsy or surgery is required there and then. The research will be used to prepare for clinical trials due to commence in September this year by referral, with an eventual aim of recommending changes in the standard of oral cancer care.

01.01.2022 ADA adds oral health voice to landmark review of nutrition in aged care 3 August 2020 In an important recognition of the link between poor nutrition and oral health, the ADA has been invited to join the Working Group for the National Congress on Food, Nutrition and the Dining Experience in Aged Care to be held in November this year. The Congress, which will bring together a representative group of homes, providers, policy makers, academics, and experts from around Australia... and the world to discuss food, nutrition and the dining experience in aged care, will be held under the aegis of the Maggie Beer Foundation (MBF) which has been awarded the contract to conduct the landmark event by the Department of Health. The objective of the congress is to find innovative options to improve nutrition and the food experience for our elderly in aged care services something that is not a huge regulatory burden and encourages better practice. Prior to this event, the MBF is undertaking a comprehensive review of the food and the dining experience in aged care homes in Australia which involves a confidential survey of current practices which it is believed is the first of its kind across the entire country. In tandem with this, MBF will conduct a literature review to provide rigorous academic perspective on the relationship between nutrition and quality-of-life, which of course includes maintenance of good oral health, in older residents of long-term facilities and the factors that have a bearing on this relationship. The Congress is part of a review of the care provided in Australia’s aged care facilities which have bene under the spotlight during the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety to which the ADA has contributed on two occasions, believing evidence-based recommendations will go a long way towards improving both the quality and safety of oral and dental health care provision for older people accessing aged care services.
