There are many good reasons to choose to build with strawbalesbetter thermal performance, non-toxic material, agricultural waste product, low embodied energy, very high levels of insulation, etc. One of the best ways to give yourself the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful build is to do a strawbale workshop. If you have no prior architectural or building experience, this theoretical ad practical works...hop will provide you with enough of an understanding of different strawbale building techniques as well as hands-on experience with some of the unique aspects of building with bales with a focus on the GREB building method. 11.01.2022 Understand what your house and furniture is made of and opt for natural materials. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in many building materials and modern day furniture pieces, are chemicals which are off gases from synthetic solids or liquids Common hazardous substances, for example, include:... Formaldehyde: Present in products made of pressed wood and formaldehyde-based resins (e.g. plywood and fiber board), and used in furniture, paneling, flooring, etc. Acetaldehyde: Used for the production of polyester resins and basic dyes; present in laminates, cork, foam mattresses, linoleum, and other products. Phenol: Present in different materials, such as wall coverings and vinyl flooring. BTEX substances: BTEX include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, which can be found in numerous petroleum products Glycol ethers: Used in various solvents, coatings, and cleaning products. Methylene chloride, often used in adhesives. Common health problems due to exposure to volatile organic compounds include asthma, skin irritation, headaches, nausea, confusion, and eye irritation. These compounds have been also linked to birth defects, endocrine disruption and cancer. From insulations and wood panels to varnishes and sealants, numerous building materials emit toxic compounds. Studies have shown that pollutants from floors, ceilings, and walls have a negative impact on the indoor air quality of buildings. Natural building materials are efficient, so are good ventilation systems. Also consider decorating your space with a few indoor plants to help filter the air.

11.01.2022 "Passive design" is design that takes advantage of the climate to maintain a comfortable temperature range in the home. Passive design reduces or eliminates the need for auxiliary heating or cooling, which accounts for about 40% (or much more in some climates) of energy use in the average Australian home. This article by Caitlin McGee is a fantastic introduction to the concept of solar passive design. Take a read and head to our website to learn more about how we incorpo...rate solar passive design into our projects! http://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design www.terradesign.com

06.01.2022 WHY INSULATE? Thermal insulation is a fundamental factor to achieve thermal comfort for occupants. Insulation reduces undesirable heat loss or gain and can lower the energy demand on heating and cooling systems. Older houses in particular pose a problem: inadequate insulation, poor solar access and air leakages amongst other things lead to unwanted heat gain and loss, and consequently higher energy bills.... Adding insulation to a home can save 45-55% of mechanical heating and cooling needs and as a result, save non-renewable resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the current energy prices, additional insulation usually pays for itself in around five to six years. With the prospect of rising energy prices its more than likely that insulation retrofitting will pay off even quicker.

04.01.2022 Following one of our workshops on how to build a straw bale house using the GREB technique, one of the participants used what she learnt to build her own straw bale house in the bushfire-prone Denmark area! It just goes to show how simple to build this technique really is.

02.01.2022 Straw bale house in Hilton, WA Dubbed 7 Doust Straw, this was made with a technique called GREB, where several straw bales are inserted in a double frame of wooden battens which supports the weight of the house. This is then covered with the so-called GREB mortar, a special plaster made of calcic lime, cement sand and sawdust which smooth the walls.
