25.01.2022 ***Purchase STA loggers at hardware prices*** Like everyone else, I've got to do what I can to keep my own lights on, but also support the broader business sector maintain a degree of normality as best as I can. And I don't want the conservation field to go without innovative hardware because of the current situation. The way the STA logger works is your data is uploaded to the cloud, stored, processed and delivered to your device. This process costs money and is why there is... an ongoing 'subscription' cost with each logger. However, for the reasons stated above, until further notice, I will be selling STA loggers with no subscription fees until next financial year. So that means you buy the hardware and get the processing free, until July 1st 2020 (Australia only). There is still a minimum quantity of 4 and all the other terms still exist. Reach out to understand more about the hardware only pricing. The website will be linked in the comments. #TerraLab #STAlogger #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #earthview #aerialimagery #esri #arcgis #qgis #googleearth #photogrammetry #drone #aerialphotography

23.01.2022 This incredibly grainy image was taken yesterday from the #modis sensor on the #terra #satellite. I'm sure you can see the smoke plumes and the detected fire and thermal anomalies (red dots). What you might not realise is that the location is roughly 51.4, 30.0 ... Or more commonly the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. I have marked the location of the power plant with a blue 'X'. The centre of the 'X' is approximately the location of the infamous reactor 4 sarcophagus. The dire...ction of the smoke plumes at the time of image acquisition suggest the fire was on a course for the power station too. Though I'm sure it is well protected and every effort is being made to ensure the site isn't impacted. It's still an interesting image worth sharing. #TerraLab #science #geospatial #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #earthview #aerialimagery #photogrammetry #drone #aerialphotography #chernobyl #pripyat #wildfire #fire

20.01.2022 The STA logger will soon be available for high volume units! I've had a lot of feedback saying, "we'd buy one right now if you had them for QuikSprays". Well, time to put your money where your mouth is. We're currently trialling a STA logger that suits QuikSpray Turbo 400 spray applicators. They will be available soon. Meanwhile, consider testing the system with a backpack version. #TerraLab #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #earthview #aerialimagery #esri #arcgis #qgis #googleearth #conservation #weedcontrol #weedmanagement #stalogger

17.01.2022 We're off to Canada So of course, here is our obligatory pre-shipment photo. This morning we shipped our first set of STA loggers to Canada where they will be used on restoration sites in Alberta. We are also undergoing further compliance testing so that we can ship to the USA!... #stalogger #TerraLab #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #esri #arcgis #conservation #ecology #ecosystemrestoration #ecosystem

16.01.2022 I'm very excited/relieved/enthusiastic/insert more adjectives to announce that TerraLab was successful in securing a grant from @basscoastshire as part of their Business and Community Resilience Grants Program. I personally spent a lot of time and money planning, designing, prototyping and testing the STA logger. I doubled down on that investment with marketing to officially release the unit in January 2020. As it turns out, the timing was not so great. Initial momentum gain...ed from the launch was wiped out by the economic impacts of Covid-19. Enquiries faded and orders were cancelled. This grant is timely and will help TerraLab with STA logger marketing and e-commerce so that we can get this important conservation and land restoration tool in the public sphere post-Covid. I'm very grateful for the support of Bass Coast Shire Council. #TerraLab #stalogger #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #esri #arcgis #conservation #ecology #ecosystemrestoration #ecosystem

13.01.2022 Drones and mine rehabilitation This unassuming and slightly ugly picture is from a map produced from a drone. It used a special camera on board to capture the near infrared band which was able to be used to produce this map. The colours represent values from the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index - or NDVI. I won't go into the technical details, but simply put, it represents how photosynthetically active a plant is. Red areas are not very active relative to the green. We ...use this as a proxy to represent other mine site specific monitoring indices to progressively track the change over time. Why is this necessary? Well, sometimes it is difficult to establish vegetation on disturbed sites like mines and landfills. They can be prone to erosive forces and may not meet expectations for rehab, or in the more severe case, they can collapse. This method of monitoring ensures areas of underperformance are identified so they can be managed, even if the poor performance isn't noticeable on the ground. In this image you can see the area to the right is performing much better than that on the left. In this case it is because the area on the right was rehabilitated a year earlier and has had more time to establish. However, if they were rehabilitated at the same time, you would conclude that something was amiss in the area to the left which would prompt further testing. #TerraLab #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #earthview #aerialimagery #esri #arcgis #qgis #googleearth #photogrammetry #drone #aerialphotography #ndvi

12.01.2022 I'm field testing the EOS Arrow100 this week. This little gem claims to give me 30-60 cm accuracy using SBAS, and 1 cm accuracy using RTK. I'll put it through its paces tomorrow where I am surveying some archaeological sites south east of Melbourne. #TerraLab #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #earthview #aerialimagery #esri #arcgis #qgis #googleearth #eosarrow #rtk

09.01.2022 Is this just aerial imagery? Well, it has imagery in it, but mostly no. It is an example of digital #cartography - the study and practice, or #science and art of #mapmaking. These days it's not so much about drawing lines on a map and writing "here be dragons" as it is about rendering different layers to produce different results. This image is simulating snow in the #MountHotham region of the #VictorianAlps. Excluding the first image which shows the final, snow covered lands...cape, the images show: 2. The bare aerial imagery 3. The imagery with a sun soaked layer over the top which is based on the elevation model. It offers warm hues to the aspects that face the afternoon sun and casts blue tones over areas of shadow. 4. A partially transparent, and somewhat blue-ish colour added to the highest elevations to simulate the coldest ice pack. 5. A somewhat "dirtier" and more transparent white added over the top that reaches lower elevations. This washes out the stronger blue of the ice pack layer and it's higher transparency reflects the more marginal snow cover at lower elevations. 6. A directional Hillshade added over the top to cast shadows on the deepest gullies and add texture to the snow. 7. A zoomed in area showing the features of the Mount Hotham ski area. #TerraLab #gis #geospatial #geoscience #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #earthview #aerialimagery #esri #arcgis #aerialphotography #alpine #snow @ Hotham Alpine Resort

06.01.2022 TerraLab is proud to announce that one of the US government's preeminent conservation organisations; the Fish and Wildlife Service, have purchased a contingent of STA loggers for use in managing their refuges. The loggers will be equipped to UTV's to track the control of weeds. This picture is a map of all of their refuges across the USA which total over 60 million hectares. #TerraLab #STAlogger #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #gps #conservation #ecosystemrestoration #ecology #ecosystem #naturalresourcemanagement

03.01.2022 Launching today (in the US, apparently coming to other countries in the future) is a near-real time wildfire boundary feature in Google Maps. Updated roughly ever hour, the feature will show the extent of the fire, and based on my browsing of this fire in California, will link to emergency services web sites and alerts. The data is derived from satellite data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) GOES constellation of satellites. These geostationa...ry satellites include infrared and optical sensors optimised for detecting hot spots on Earth's surface. GIS users have long been aware of this data, but including some of its outputs in Google Maps will make it much more useful to the casual user. I don't think I need to explain to fellow Australian's how useful this feature would be. #TerraLab #gis #science #geospatial #geoscience #cartography #geography #map #maps #mapping #topography #data #earth #geo #terra #datascience #remotesencing #analytics #satellite #earthview #aerialimagery #googleearth #googlemaps #google #fire #wildfire
