16.01.2022 Firstly, a big thank you for the wonderful response to my embryo offer in America. Sadly, time ran out on us this year and there was no leeway due to crippling drought and lack of feed in Australia. We will be doing the same thing again next year and would aim to have everything organised by December 2019. The animals can then move into quarantine in January 2020. If a group would like to do any farm tours, please let me know. Geof and I are in a position to organise and... host them. This gorgeous little group is from Armadown Reds in Queensland but there are plenty of standards to see as well! Keep in touch. Celia See more

14.01.2022 To all our friends, colleagues and supporters. Many apologies (and regrets) for my inability to keep our site updated. I’m not sure that will ever improve . Occasionally fb offers me the opportunity to update - as it has now - so I nip in and do just that... All is going extremely well with the Aussie part of our lives. Goats have absolutely, and at long last, established themselves as one of the most exciting mainstream industries in Australian agriculture. It has taken a phenomenally long time. 29 years since we brought our original shipment in from Africa !! As is happening elsewhere, the extreme beauty and charm of the animals themselves, led them straight off into the hobby and showy arenas and it has been hard work getting them back on track! Born and bred for meat production, this 3 decade ‘red herring’ has been an eye opener in its intensity and has seriously warped the public perception of our lovely Boers. Beautiful - they are, but hobby animals they are NOT as most of us know. The main difficulty is how they lend themselves to the showring with their magnificence and ennoblement. Many of us have built our lives and enterprises on what should be the true commerciality of the Boer breed - Survivability and Meat Production - Terraweena certainly did!! Many did not. Happily, a very determined and tenacious group of breeders (mostly broad acre farmers) in a number of regions of the world have prevailed in their work. Please note : Dr Colin Ramsay of Dudauman Park, New South Wales, Australia has been leading the charge along with other commercially minded and farsighted breeders. So Australian bred Boers are finally and inarguably proven in their true, commercial abilities, through those long years of : * tough love style husbandry * scientific research * assessment and selection * and further selection.... year after year * much assisted now with input from the MLA. To all those who abandoned breeding Boers for their lack of commercial attributes - why not reconsider?

11.01.2022 Thanks for sharing, Dirk. We are very pleased that Sandy Campbell (principle of Silvies Valley Ranch) is ‘filling in’ (by telecommunication) for Colin RAMSAY at our upcoming Kinblethmont Forum in Scotland (on 25 - 27th October). The goat project at Silvies Valley Ranch must be one of the most intriguing goat enterprises in the world at a place that is undoubtedly top of our bucket list!

05.01.2022 This is an invitation to anyone interested in Australian Boer Goats, whether their interest is in show quality, stud breeding, commercial production - live animals, semen or embryos. Importer of South African genetics until 2007 when the border from SA closed. Founder of the first Boer Goat Association in Australia. Now closely aligned with Boer Goat Australia (BGA). After 30 years of involvement, Geof and I are no longer actively farming and have turned our experience to... hosting customers and conducting farm tours throughout Australia. We are very flexible. 03.01.2022 Thank you very much, Andre Pienaar for compiling this excellent historical narrative and Dirk Steyn for sharing it for us all to see. So much speculation exists about the Kalahari Reds and red Boer goats in general. It is wonderful to see it all laid out so fully by the originators. Breeders can move on in confidence from this point with the safe knowledge of the history. ... Thanks again

02.01.2022 I don’t know what everyone else feels, but to me this is an exciting time for Boer goats. There is no need to introduce them anywhere, anymore. Everyone knows them and everyone loves them I’m also seeing a most important division in the direction the industry itself is moving, which is great. ... For too long now the ‘showy stud breeding’ side has predominated over the ‘commercial breeding’ side. This is not the true way forward for the breed and it has all been rather fierce and disappointing. Most off-putting too, for lots of people, which has been sad. At long last!! There now seems to be a clear division of purpose which can only be good for everyone - especially the goats themselves. In Australia we call the directional breeding choice ‘fit for purpose’. IMO that says it all. OK . Now Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) is right behind us and the breeders are sorting it out - in Oz and in UK. It’s now time (way overdue actually) for the Associations and Societies to sort themselves out. The breed needs to be at the heart of their decisions, not individual personalities, personal preferences and personal bank accounts. (Not in all cases of course, but in many). More soon and Happy Days Celia

01.01.2022 What a very excellent article. Thanks again, Dirk. Anyone who googles Silvies Valley Ranch in Oregon, as mentioned in the article, will discover a jewel. Wonderful place, wonderful people, wonderful goats (I’m biased of course, as some are ours).
