23.01.2022 Would you believe that the grainy tanned coloured grit in the fingers of the glove pictured is sand extracted from a horse's stomach? It is good for horses to graze and eat off the ground for the sake of maintaining normal dental health and tooth wear, but for horses on the Northern Beaches this poses a particular risk of the ingestion of sand. Over time, small amounts of sand from the soil will accumulate in your horse's gut and may lead to symptoms associated with diarrhoea..., colic and poor weight gain/body condition. In severe cases, the accumulation of sand can result in up to 40kg of sand sitting in your horse's abdomen! In order to prevent sand ingestion, we recommend feeding your horse off rubber matting or a low hanging hay net and by feeding one cup of psyllium husk twice a day, for one week every month. Some horses also require drenching with paraffin oil. If you are concerned about your horse's risk of sand ingestion, please call us on 9450 2020.

23.01.2022 Do you have a cat that vomits? Although vomiting can be caused by medical conditions, one normal cause of occasional vomiting in otherwise healthy cats is hairballs. As cats self-groom, they ingest a lot of hair that is normally passed in their faeces, but sometimes this hair is vomited up. If you find your cat vomiting or retching frequently, in large volumes, or is unwell, make an appointment with us today.

22.01.2022 Although horses can sweat on a hot day or during exercise to help them cool down, studies have confirmed that one of the most important risk factors for horses succumbing to heat stress is humidity. If the weather forecast predicts high heat as well as high humidity conditions, try to avoid riding in the middle of the day. It is also important to provide your horse with plentiful water and electrolyte supplements as horses lose a lot in their sweat. If you are hosing your horse down on a hot day, make sure you scrape off any excess water from their body as this water will quickly warm to the surrounding ambient temperature and make your horse more hot! Symptoms of heat stress in horses include panting or mouth breathing, nostril flaring, agitated and distressed behaviour, kicking out, abnormal mentation and, in severe cases, collapse.

21.01.2022 Some foods are delicious for us humans but very unhealthy for our pets. Steer your pup clear of chocolate, grapes, sultanas, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts, as they are all toxic foods for dogs. Some pets can also be lactose intolerant and become sick if they consume dairy products, like milk or cheese. If you do feed your pet dairy products, only feed in small amounts as a treat, and stop if any vomiting or diarrhoea occurs. Speak to us for further advice on which foods for your pet to avoid.

21.01.2022 Cats can come into season multiple times a year and breed easily, so it’s important to have your cat desexed to prevent unwanted kittens and other potential issues. Cat shelters often have large numbers of kittens needing to be re-homed, so the best advice is whether your cat is male or female, do the right thing by your cat and get them desexed now! Contact our team for more information about desexing your pet.

21.01.2022 Goodbye blue bucket! Thanks for accompanying me on my horse calls, but I think it is time for retirement! #vetlife

21.01.2022 When travelling with dogs in the car, it’s important they are adequately restrained for both their safety and yours. Many car restraints for dogs aren’t thoroughly tested for safety, with reviews by Choice and the NRMA previously failing many of the available products as unsafe for people, pets or both. Make sure you research car restraints before buying and purchase a good quality restraint that has been thoroughly safety tested to protect both you and your pooch.

20.01.2022 As the cold and wet days linger through winter, remember to keep your pet warm, dry and comfortable. Carefully place your pets bed out of the weather and away from draughts, with a dry towel or rug to keep them warm. Coats can also help to protect your dog from the rain and keep them warm. Colder weather can also exacerbate arthritis in older pets with stiff joints, so chat with us today if you have any health concerns about your pet during winter. With a little TLC, your pet can stay warm and cosy while outside gets wet and cold.

20.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what the world looks like from your dog's eyes? Read this interesting article to learn more! https://theconversation.com/do-dogs-really-see-in-just-blac

19.01.2022 Heat stress is a risk to all pets, but particularly dogs and those kept in cages, such as rabbits and birds. All pets must have access to shade in a well-ventilated area, as well as constant access to cool, fresh water. Dogs should only be exercised in the early morning or evening. If your pets show signs of heat stress, such as open-mouth panting, collapse, or excessive salivating (dogs), contact us immediately. Let’s stay safe this summer.

19.01.2022 A healthy diet for dogs and cats ideally includes a mix of wet and dry pet food as these contain the essential vitamins and minerals that pets need to stay healthy. When pets chew and crunch up their biscuits, this helps keep their teeth clean reducing plaque build-up. Speak with your vet for the best advice on choosing the best diet to maintain your pets dental health. WERE OFFERING 15% OFF ALL DENTAL PROCEDURES! 18.01.2022 Sassy miss Gigi brought a friend along for her health check and vaccination Gigi had a lot more to say than Bear, but they are both very healthy #kittensofinstagram #kittenlove #vetlife

18.01.2022 Urine spraying in cats can be frustrating and an unwelcome behaviour, but what does it mean? The causes of urine spraying vary between cats, so its important to get to the root cause. Some of our feline friends may spray due to stress and anxiety, territory marking or medical causes, such as renal failure or UTIs. Make an appointment with us to say nay to the spray today.

17.01.2022 Misty had his blood pressure taken like a pro! Older cats can develop high blood pressure secondary to kidney and thyroid disease. Misty’s owner noticed that Misty was drinking more water than normal so decided that it was time for a check up. If you notice any subtle changes to your pet’s behaviour, give us a call on 94502020. #catsofinstagram #catvet #vetlife

16.01.2022 With so many different products on the market, it can be hard to know whats the best food for your pet. These general principles will help you buy a good quality, safe food for your furry friend: - Check the food is complete and balanced this means it has all the nutrients your pet needs for daily nutrition - Check for made to AAFCO standards this is another sign the food is complete and balanced - If produced in Australia, check the food complies with the Australian Standard (AS5812:2017), which is voluntary but recommended

15.01.2022 Though they are bundles of joy, kids and puppies need their interactions monitored in order to stay safe. If pushed far enough, any dog can bite. Thats why its essential to be adamant about training and socialising your dog. Teach your kids to read dog behaviour a growl means its time to back off. Establishing boundaries and providing safe spaces for your dog is also important. Try giving your pup a little me time by using a child gate to portion off sections of your house.

15.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet shaking their head or scratching their ears more than usual? It might indicate a problem with their ears. Its a good idea to check your pets ears when youre giving them a pat or brush. Look for signs of black or waxy discharge in the ear canals, red scratches on their ears, a yeasty or strong odour coming from the ear canal or irritation or pain when you touch their ears. If you have any concerns, it is always best to bring them in for a check-up.

15.01.2022 Can you believe Christmas is right around the corner? While this year has been more unusual than most, one thing Australians can look forward to is Christmas with family and friends. Ensure your pets have a safe Christmas by keeping an eye out for common hazards, such as Christmas trees, decorations, gift ribbons and BBQ skewers. If you think your pet has ingested something it shouldn’t have, contact us immediately.

15.01.2022 When plaque and tartar build up on your dog's teeth, bacteria can infect the gum tissue and enter the bloodstream, ending up in your dogs heart, causing heart disease. This is why regular health checks for your pet are so important, so that any potential teeth problems can be picked up early. Keep an eye out for signs of: red gums, plaque on the teeth, tooth discolouration, bad breath, chewing to one side, avoiding hard foods, wobbly teeth and not wanting people to touch their mouth/head. If you have any concerns about your pet, book them in for a dental check with us today.

14.01.2022 Have you been asked to bring in a sample of your pet’s urine before? Urine samples need to be free of contaminants, which means you should be careful when catching the urine. If you have a dog, use a clean ice cream container to catch a sample when they squat or lift their leg. If you have a cat, you can get special non-absorbent litter that you use in a clean litter tray to obtain a sample. Ask us if you need help sourcing non-absorbent litter for your cat.

14.01.2022 Summer has well and truly arrived. There are a few steps we can take to make our pets more comfortable on warm, summer nights. Remember to never put coats or jackets on your pet on hot nights and to switch their bedding to something comfortable but cooler (e.g. raised bedding that allows airflow). If your pet gets hot, you may even notice them seeking out cool tiles - you can also set up a small fan near their bedding to help them cool down.

14.01.2022 Giving your dog a bath helps to clean their coat, but its also important to regularly clean your pets toys, bowls and bedding too. This helps remove dirt, germs and odour, as well as any potential flea eggs in the bedding. Use a gentle detergent or washing powder, rinse thoroughly and make sure everything is nice and dry before returning it to your pet to use again.

14.01.2022 With winter well and truly here, you might have acquired an unwanted possum guest in your house. The first step to show your new guest out the door is learning what you can and cant do about it. Possums are a protected species in most states of Australia, so check with your local council before taking any action. Once youve blocked their access to your roof, consider offering an alternative such as a possum box in a tree in your backyard.

14.01.2022 WARNING: TICKS We have seen a surge in paralysis tick cases at NEVS over the past few weeks. Without treatment, progression of paralysis and worsening of sign...s is virtually certain (more critical cases require ventilation) so be sure to have your pet checked over by a veterinarian if they are displaying signs of wobbly gait, lethargy, inappetence/vomiting or breathing difficulties. We recommend using a tick preventative all year round and performing thorough tick searches daily by working your fingers through your pets entire coat, paying special attention to their eyes, lips and mouth. If in doubt - a prompt check up is always the safest option.

14.01.2022 Our pets seek warmth and comfort during the winter, with outdoor pets the most vulnerable to the cold. If your pets live outdoors, ensure they always have access to dry, warm shelter. For dogs, try a raised kennel with bedding or a cat den with warm bedding for cats. Consider bringing your outdoor pet into the laundry at night or giving your outdoor dog a coat to escape the cold.

13.01.2022 After the year that’s been, we all need a holiday. And while Bali might be out of the question, there are plenty of things to see and do in Australia. If you’re planning on boarding your dog this summer, make sure their parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. All kennels require proof of current C5 vaccination before accepting your dog. If you’re unsure whether your dog is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.

12.01.2022 We all love Spring and that fantastic feeling of being out in the sun and green paddocks but this article is a usefool tool to remind horse owners about the signs and risks associated with laminitis. https://thehorse.com//10-early-warning-signs-of-laminitis/

11.01.2022 Working from home and more one-on-one time has likely meant your pet has been spoiled with attention these past few months. Young pets growing up in the COVID-era have likely never experienced large gatherings of people and may be apprehensive during Christmas festivities. Ensure you give your pet a quiet place to retreat to if things become too much and to give them plenty of support if they become anxious. Contact us if you’re worried about your pet’s anxiety.

11.01.2022 Although COVID gave us all a free pass on 2020’s resolutions, there are some simple new year resolutions you can make for 2021 that are good for you and your pet. Consider walking your pet in new areas, such as exploring a different part of your neighbourhood or visiting the beach. Try brushing your pet’s teeth daily, as teeth brushing is an effective way of reducing bad breath. If you don’t already, make a habit of playing or walking your pet daily.

10.01.2022 If you find a baby bird all by itself one day, take some time to watch, and ensure its parents arent still around caring for it. If the bird is small and not fully feathered, try to find its nest and, if you can, place it back inside the nest. If you arent able to reach its nest, call your local wildlife group to seek further advice. If the bird is injured, just bring them into the clinic and we can check them over.

10.01.2022 While some people have already started their Christmas pudding preparation, many of us have barely thought about what food we will serve over the festive season. When it comes to festive food for our pets, some are safer than others. Avoid feeding your pet anything containing onions, raisins, sultanas, chocolate or cooked bones. Non-fatty meat in small quantities and cooked vegetables, like pumpkin and potatoes, are fine to feed your dog for Christmas festivities.

10.01.2022 UPDATE: we might have a donor lined up. A huge thank you to everyone for your care and support in helping Pluto! Well keep you up to date Can you help save P...luto? This is Pluto, a lovely 5 year old boy who sadly has an illness causing a severe anemia (low red blood cells). If you have a friendly, healthy cat at home between 1-8 years old and over 4.3 kg we would LOVE to meet them at SASH and see if they might be a match to help Pluto! Please call our Client Services team on (02) 9889 0289 and they can put you in contact with a member of our blood bank team. Please share this post with anyone who may be interested. See more

09.01.2022 On long, cold winter nights, there is no better pet than a cat. Drawn towards warm laps and woollen blankets, cats often become more affectionate during the colder months, as they seek comfort and warmth from their owners. As more than just an excellent hot water bottle, the colder temperatures are a great time to strengthen your bond with your feline friend. Post a picture in the comments of your cat embracing the winter months.

09.01.2022 Canine cough, or kennel cough for its link with boarding kennels, is brought about by a group of viruses and bacteria that cause upper respiratory disease in dogs. Many causes of kennel cough can be vaccinated against, but your dog must be vaccinated annually for them to be fully protected (much like the human flu vaccine). Signs of kennel cough include a harsh, dry cough, loss of bark/voice, fatigue and nasal discharge.

08.01.2022 Regular brushing of your pets teeth helps to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar and reduce the risk of gum disease. Bacteria from unhealthy teeth and gums can enter the bloodstream, which can cause disease in the heart, liver and kidneys. If brushing your pets teeth is too difficult for your pet, there are other ways to clean their teeth, including formulated diets, food additives, water additives and mechanical cleaning. If your pooch hasnt had a check-up with us recently, book in for a consultation today.

08.01.2022 Ever wonder how your dog is ageing? If you want to make sure your dog is ageing comfortably and in good health, call us on 94502020

08.01.2022 Between unwrapping gifts, swimming, eating pavlova and playing board games, it can be hard to give your pet the attention they deserve during Christmas. Make a plan beforehand to ensure they are entertained all day long. Make some frozen, stuffed Kong treats with peanut butter or salt-reduced stock as a treat. Consider organising a puppy playdate or if they’re not a fan of noise, keep them in a cool, quiet room with food, water, toys and bedding until the guests head home.

08.01.2022 How often you should wash your dog depends on their breed, lifestyle and skin health. If your dog is a short-coated breed that lives outside, they probably only need to be washed with gentle dog shampoo twice a year. If you have a long-coated breed, or a dog that lives inside, or one that goes swimming regularly, you might want to wash more often. Dog’s don’t need to be bathed weekly, unless they have a skin condition that requires medicated shampoo.

07.01.2022 One of the unfortunate side effects of the COVID-19 restrictions is a reported increase in puppy scams. These scams prey on peoples emotions and trap people by selling puppies online that never existed. To avoid these scams, try to always meet your potential pups mother and view their breeding facility in person before handing over any money. This will also help prevent buying a puppy from unscrupulous or dodgy breeders.

07.01.2022 There is a painful dental condition cats can suffer from called FRL (Feline Resorptive Lesions). The condition occurs when the tooth is eaten away, exposing the sensitive pulp of the tooth. Symptoms include jaw chattering, pawing at the face, salivation, bad breath, fussiness with hard foods, lethargy and reduced appetite, with treatment involving the removing of the affected teeth. Cats with FRL dont always show signs of mouth pain and may require teeth x-rays to diagnose the condition. An important reminder to regularly have your cats teeth checked. Is it time to check your cats teeth?

07.01.2022 Although often thought of as pets for children, rabbits and guinea pigs are personable and affectionate animals that make great pets for adults too. A high quality, hay-based diet is important to ensure the health of these animals, as is appropriate housing and company. Guinea pigs don’t cope well on their own and need to live with other guinea pigs. If you’re thinking of bringing a rabbit or guinea pig into your family, contact our friendly team for advice.

07.01.2022 When plaque and tartar build-up on your dogs teeth, bacteria can infect the gum tissue and enter the bloodstream, ending up in your dogs heart and causing disease. 07.01.2022 Nothing can bring an otherwise tough dog to their knees like a torn nail. Torn nails can bleed dramatically, but the real issue is the exposed bundle of nerves and blood vessels in the ‘quick’, which can lead to significant pain and infection, if left untreated. It’s best to bring your dog into the clinic if they’ve torn a nail. If there is a lot of bleeding, you can gently wrap their foot in a towel and bring them straight down.

06.01.2022 Have you acquired backyard chickens recently? Here are a few tips to help keep them healthy: - Ensure you have predator-proof shelter to keep your chickens safe and comfortable - Feed them a good quality poultry pellet as well as vegetable scraps and insects from your garden - Worm your chickens regularly If you notice any signs of disease, get in touch with the clinic, as birds will often hide illness until they are very sick.

06.01.2022 The wonderful Roxie came in for her vaccinations today and was such a good girl. Just look at those sassy whiskers! Roxie was vaccinated with a C7 vaccination; this covers for leptospirosis - a disease that causes sometime fatal kidney failure in dogs who may be exposed to rats, stagnant bodies of water or certain areas of Sydney. If youre not sure about whether C7 vaccination is right for your dog, give us a call on 94502020

05.01.2022 Does your cat get anxious when its time for a trip to the vet? Fortunately there are steps you can take to help make their experience a little less stressful. Get your cat used to their pet carrier before their appointment with us by practicing putting them in the carrier for short periods of time. Try placing your cat into their carrier bum first, as they dont like being put head first. You can also create a positive association for them by sneaking a few treats into the carrier. Speak to us about calming medications and pheromone sprays that could help keep your cat calm for their next visit with us.

04.01.2022 With rent, bills and all meals supplied our pets get it pretty good. There is, however, the risk that our pets can overeat if their food is too readily available, which can lead to obesity and other health concerns. To help prevent overeating, only give your pet access to food at designated meal times for a limited period. Keep your pet active with exercise and stimulation activities, so that theyre not only focused on food. If your pets bag of food has a feeding recommendation on it, it is for the weight that your pet should be, not what the weight of the pet is. Speak with us for advice on how much food to feed your pet, as sometimes food volume can be reduced.

04.01.2022 Contact us on 94502020 about leptospirosis vaccination and your pups health.

04.01.2022 Continuing to exercise your pup during winter is essential for their health. All dogs benefit from exercise during winter but if your dog has arthritis, exercise is an especially important part of managing this disease, as gently moving their joints helps to reduce pain. Try to keep the exercise duration short and avoid strenuous exercise without adequate warm-ups. If possible, aim to walk your pup during the warmest part of the day. Even just a short walk around the block will be beneficial for your dog.

03.01.2022 When plaque and tartar build up on your dogs teeth, bacteria can infect the gum tissue and enter the bloodstream, ending up in your dogs heart, causing heart disease. This is why regular health checks for your pet are so important, so that any potential teeth problems can be picked up early. 01.01.2022 If you have a cat that goes outside, theyve probably gotten into a fight with another cat at some point. When cats fight, they may use their needle-sharp teeth to puncture the skin of the other cat, which drives bacteria deep into the tissue, leading to a cat bite abscess. Left untreated, these pockets of infection can burst or spread. If you notice your cat has gotten into a punch-up, make an appointment with us, so we can treat the infection before it can become too severe.
