24.01.2022 I’m not sure that I could destroy a book like this, but these are well done.

23.01.2022 It's the truth!

23.01.2022 Do you know kids who would love this Lego station?

19.01.2022 Schools should learn from this. Sadly they don't.

19.01.2022 This was posted in our MU Group and we just had to share, because it's so true. Music and arts education are crucially important!!

18.01.2022 There are so many wonderful career choices that do not require Uni. Teach young people ALL their options and not the ridiculous pre conceived ideas that you have to go to Uni to be successful or to earn good money.

18.01.2022 Literacy. This whiteboard is left up with either a large word that the kids have to make small words out of, or we have a label of homophones, compound words, homonyms etc. This is a well loved activity which the kids do at their own leisure.

17.01.2022 Want to feel like you're on holiday with the kids? Perhaps lazing around a resort pool for the day. Did you know that many local resorts will let you use the...ir pool if you make purchases from their bar and poolside restaurant. You'll need to check in with reception when you arrive, but the following four resorts have confirmed they allow this and also do birthday parties. Novotel Cairns Sea Temple Palm Cove Hotel Grand Chancellor Palm Cove (Crocodile slide) Colonial club Resort Cairns (must be local and purchase lunch or dinner - or have a membership with them -they also have a playground). Just be aware that there may not be facilities as such eg showers as it is a resort primarily for guests, and you will pay resort prices for food and drinks, so perhaps check each resorts website before you go for their menus.

15.01.2022 Cooking. The girls are seperating eggs to make creme brûlée and meringues.

12.01.2022 Love, love love the Cattana Wetlands in Smithfield. Such a beautiful place to go with your family and kids (or without them - oh the serenity). If you are wa...nting to avoid the crowds and get into nature, this hidden gem should be on your list. This 80 hectare conservation park features a 420m boardwalk and many well maintained paths that takes you through feather palm forests and freshwater and salt water lakes, teeming with an abundant plant and birdlife. There are many bird and fish spotting vantage points set up along the various paths too. The paths are well suited for wheelchairs, scooters, bikes and strollers, and are all well sign posted. Its' easy to wonder quite a distance, so we suggest that if you have young kids to take a stroller with you so you don't end up walking back carrying them. (Been there, done that - and it's a big reserve). Obviously being a wetland area there is a lot of water around, and the Cairns Regional Council have removed crocodiles in the past - so while you're unlikely to see one now, just be aware and stay away from the water. There are many benches, picnic tables, water fountains and free bbq's in this park. Toilets are at the main entrance.

11.01.2022 I taught a class at the jail today and there was this moment. I was sharing the picture below. I began talking about how our children often present with behavio...rs that look like the shark, but if we look below the water, we will realize they are really just scared goldfish trying to have a need met. Their behaviors might communicate anger and hostility, but below the surface is fear and a hurting child. I further explained that it is our job as parents to stop parenting the shark fin, and look below the surface and meet the needs of the goldfish. One of the inmates raised her hand and said, "I'm alot like that picture. I act all tough and mean, but I'm really just a scared fish. I wish when I was a kid, someone would have thought to look for the goldfish, instead of just seeing me as a shark" May we all spend the day looking for the goldfish, instead of punishing the shark.

10.01.2022 Not all children are born with creativity. Some need to be shown how they can be creative. I like to give the kids pictures of crafts, and let them figure out how to make it. Backward engineering so to speak. We had a large amount of toilet paper rolls and so we brainstormed some ideas of what we could make with them. The kids did your normal run of the mill craft project. A deer with sticks for legs, cars with bottle tops for wheels and some random items stuck together. The...y spent approximately 30 mins on these activities. When I introduced the photos of the wall hangings, we had a vastly different approach. The kids spent time discussing how they thought that it had been made. They then got some rolls to experiment with them. They tried cutting the roll by stabbing the scissors into it and then cutting around it. One of the kids watching, realised that all they had to do was squash the roll and cut straight across. As they were cutting the rolls, they were discussing how they could get them to stick together. They stopped and tried regular PVA glue but realised that they needed something to hold the pieces together while the glue dried. So they went back to cutting and thought about how they could hold the rolls together. They eventually came to the decision to use the hot glue guns. This project lasted days. All from a simple picture. Please note finished photos shown below are not my images. If you are paranoid about germs, although its been proven that loo rolls are ok, get the kids to use them as target practice and spray with vinegar. Let them sit in the sun until dry. See more
