25.01.2022 **Look who's back for round two** You may remember Bowie the Golden Retriever from our post back in June who presented for inappetence & vomiting. X-rays of his abdomen showed he had swallowed a large rock which required surgical removal. Earlier this week Bowie returned from his morning walk and refused to eat his breakfast (very unusual for Bowie). ... As the day progressed, he became lethargic and vomited a couple of times. When Bowie turned down dinner that night, his owners knew something was not right and they called us to make an appointment to see one of our vets asap. When Bowie bounded through our front door and into our waiting room as the excitable boy he is, his owners assured us his newfound energy was just because he was excited to see us and he was actually very lethargic at home. Dr Anthony carried out a thorough examination of Bowie, and because of his history, left no stone unturned, and took some x-rays of his abdomen. The x-ray was processed, and the image popped up on the screen not a rock but TWO ROCKS!!! Bowie was immediately prepped for surgery. One rock was removed from Bowie's intestine and the other from his stomach, luckily no damage had been done by the rocks and he recovered well and was discharged later that day. Although not surprised he had eaten something he shouldn't have, Bowie's owners had gone over their yard with a fine tooth comb to remove all visible rocks after the first incident to prevent it from ever happening again but where there’s a will there’s a way and recent heavy rain may have uncovered the rocks from underneath the soil. We can only hope Bowie has finally hit rock bottom and has decided to give them up for good

19.01.2022 **** TICK UPDATE ***** Meet Barney, Barney is a 13yr old male Maltese, who saw Dr. Sammi over the weekend for incoordination in his hind legs and a change in his breathing/bark. Upon presentation Barney had a large paralysis tick hooked into his left lower lip which had gone undetected causing his mild paralysis. Because Barney’s owners were so quick to pick up on his symptoms treatment was started straight away ensuring his best chances for a full recovery and his owners wer...e very happy to have us share his story to highlight the need for prevention even during the winter months. To make sure your pet is best protected against nasty paralysis ticks please contact us on 43652300 or drop into the hospital to organise the best preventatives for your pet. Some symptoms of tick paralysis are: * Vomiting, reduced appetite, lethargy or depression. * Weakness or wobbliness (especially in the hind legs), or reluctance to move. * A grunting type of breathing, or a change in the bark or meow. The disease can progress to cause complete paralysis and eventually death.

15.01.2022 You may remember Doug from our post back in November 2019 who required emergency surgery after ingesting a sock? Well he's at it again! Doug presented to our hospital yesterday with similar symptoms to last time. He was found to have an obstruction requiring urgent surgery. Needless to say, we were not surprised to find another large sock firmly lodged in Doug's intestines. The sock was removed and Doug went home later that afternoon. An answer to the age old question, what happens to the missing socks? Well, at least in Doug's household we know the answer....

02.01.2022 Poor Moose the goose feeling a little under the weather this morning after requiring medication to induce vomiting after getting into a large volume of dark chocolate (and his siblings breakfast perhaps by the quantity of vomitus?? ) A reminder that pups have an excellent sense of smell and a taste for mischief and to keep all food items not meant for them up out of reach because to get to these Old Gold chocolate coated almonds this morning Moose * Got through the wrapping ...paper * Got through the plastic lid of the tub * Got through the foil seal Thankfully Moose should make a full recovery (after a day of feeling poorly!) because he was caught in the act and swift action taken.
