25.01.2022 Most nutritionists are aware of black pepper’s digestive properties but did you know it is actually a fermented food and was once more valuable than silver and gold?

23.01.2022 Wow: melittin from bee venom has been found to lyse triple negative breast cancer cells in mice AND improve targeting and effectiveness of chemotherapy. Human trials coming up......

19.01.2022 How scrumptious are these bouquets?

18.01.2022 Does high blood iron increase risk of age-related diseases and early death? Does this explain why men tend to die earlier than women and the link between red meat consumption (haem iron) and diseases like CVD and cancer? Scientists from the University of Edinburgh and the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Germany have published a genetic study of over 60,000 samples and found that those related to iron metabolism are highly correlated with lifespan, healthspan (years of healthy life), and longevity. Original paper linked in the article.

14.01.2022 Pumpkin seeds are the richest plant source of protein. The next time you’re preparing pumpkin, don’t throw those nutrients away - roast them with tamari for a protein hit! https://d131k5wuh4trw5.cloudfront.net//NFL_Protein-Graphic

13.01.2022 Check out these Infographics from WHO's Essential Nutrition Actions: https://www.who.int//to/ENA-infographics-adult-smaller.png

12.01.2022 The government is due to make a decision on the Health Star Rating system review in mid-July. Only 40% eligible products currently display the HSR and its use is heavily skewed towards healthier products. The solution is clear: make the system mandatory now. The food manufacturing industry will have a staged phase-in (it’s already had six years!) and help Australians to choose healthier foods. People before profits!

11.01.2022 Barramundi is high in LCn3? That's news to me but good news because farmed barra from North Queensland is sustainable and gets the green light from AMCS.

11.01.2022 Happy World Teachers’ Day to all my colleagues. It has been a tough year to state the bleeding obvious, but to all those who continue to put their students first and work for the love of education: I salute you! #WorldTeachersDay2020

10.01.2022 This is so great to see.

09.01.2022 Fantastic! Is it just me, or is there a lot of positive news and good changes happening around us? I love this sort of initiative which is obviously paying off. More inclusivity, compassion and understanding of others is the only way to progress together.

03.01.2022 Need any more reasons to ditch the processed food (or to convince your kids and younger* clients)? We’re only sustainable if we each stick to 7 square metres a day. Chicken surprised me - free range would use even more cropland so less frequent consumption would be the answer. *I say younger because 9-16 year olds typically consume more than 40% of their diet as processed food but they also tend to have a heightened social and environmental conscience so it could be a useful angle.

03.01.2022 Cognitive Bias Modification. 4 x 10 minute training sessions is sufficient to support abstinence from alcohol up to 12 months later! The researchers envisage this tool being used for smoking cessation and avoidance of unhealthy foods. An app is on the way. I can think of several other uses

01.01.2022 "When you take away the cherry-picked science, alarmist and emotive language on the Internet and the bro science, you’re left with a food that rightly is deserving of a place in any person’s diet." That's a wrap on soy: bro science is no science.

01.01.2022 One of my heroes, Professor Fiona Stanley talks about Australia’s response to COVID-19 and the importance of First Nations’ control over their own communities and of public engagement with science.

01.01.2022 Fantastic news: the gut-brain connection in autism is being investigated in a clinical trial at UQ. We really need some research evidence to back up treatment in this area. If you know anyone affected or interested in participating, please get in touch with the principle researcher.

01.01.2022 Tim Crowe does it again: up to 4 cups coffee a day (400mg caffeine) is linked to lower mortality, reduced risk of liver, endometrial, mouth, pharynx, larynx and skin cancer, improvement in Parkinson's disease symptoms, lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and improved sports performance. If you're pregnant, keep it to no more than 2 cups/day. https://www.thinkingnutrition.com.au/coffee-health-benefits/
