22.01.2022 What a month: lockdown done & dusted and lots of client projects out in the world too! I was pleased to have helped Steve Palise with his Commercial Property Investing - Explained Simply book cover (for Major Street Publishing) and his website design too! If you're property minded, be sure to check out his new book in stores early 2021. www.paliseproperty.com

12.01.2022 I need to gripe about DIY graphic design for a sec. This poster is displayed on the front door of my kid’s swimming lesson facility. Nice sentiment, problematic graphic design. Why? Well, the graphic is two white/light-skinned kids representing the students of the swim school. It’s a business in a suburb and city council area that is highly multicultural, and one that employs many non-white staff. On top of that, it does nothing but reinforce a binary gender system and able-...bodied people as standard. One more time for the people at the back: Representation matters. Graphic design might seem easy, especially as DIY tools with drag-and-drop pre-loaded graphics gain popularity and offer a (sometimes) more economic choice to hiring a designer. But it’s a background in effective, inclusive communication that makes a graphic design professional worth hiring. One poster on one door on one building might not seem like much, but what does this say about this business to the dozens, if not hundreds, of young people and their families who see it regularly? And why does this graphic even need to be an image of children at all? Give me 60 seconds and I’d find you a picture of a friendly cartoon dolphin or octopus or clownfish. Or if you don’t have the budget for a royalty-free image, through typography alone I’d convey the excitement of returning to swim school after months of lockdown to its intended audience whatever their background or ability. Yes, I'm assuming this was a DIY design job. And if you want to or have to DIY your marketing & comms, that’s totally cool with me. But please, do what a professional does: think about the audience, and think about the other messages your business might be putting out there with the graphics you choose.

11.01.2022 I love an art exhibition dedicated solely to photographic works (though I am realllly missing visiting art galleries of any description at the moment!). I stumbled upon the MGA - Monash Gallery of Art's Bowness Photography Prize finalists online last week. Check them out... there are some pretty stunning entries! https://www.mga.org.au/bowness-p/2020-finalists-preview//1 Pic: Tumbling Through The Treetops by Tamara Dean

01.01.2022 I recently finished designing the book 'Launched: Start Your Career Right After College, Even During a Pandemic' for author Rob Feinstein. A sharp, focused read, it's full of expert and practical advice on how to best prepare yourself when searching for a job in this ultra-competitive hiring environment. While Launched is written largely for a US/post-college market, the sections on career networking and job interviews are universal. Find it on Amazon now.
