13.01.2022 Pilates provides a stable base and centre from which to move from Exercises can be very muscle group specific allowing greater recruitment and strengthening of these small, deep muscles. This helps provide extra stability to our joints and allows the bigger, superficial muscles to then work efficiently through more global strength work.

03.01.2022 ~ SCOLIOSIS ~ Last night ABC's 7.30 programme included a piece on the medical fraternity's approach to treating patients with bad backs, including those with scoliosis. It got me thinking of how 18 years ago I came very close to having surgery but opted for a back brace instead to treat my scoliosis. The right choice for me. My curvy back cannot be cured but it can be managed through correct and consistent exercise. Like many people I have a lifetime ahead of looking after ...my back. It is not a chore but rather a way of life which keeps you fit, strong and healthy! And for me that way of life is centred around Pilates, because it involves low impact exercises that focus on posture, alignment, muscle tone and flexibility. The first image is an X-ray of my spine showing how it looks today and the second image shows me holding the brace I wore 23 hours a day 7 days a week from 14 to 17 years of age.
