06.01.2022 WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR RUNNERS I’m often asked for advice on running shoes and when you should replace them. For the novice runner , that is someone running less- than 35-40km per-week. Any quality running shoe will do with comfort and affordability the primary considerations. If your a novice, don’t stop reading, some specific advice is coming that pertains to all.... For the more experienced runner I recommend replacing there shoes every six months or 700km whichever comes first. The attached picture shows my shoes old and new,( exact same brand and style) after exactly six months twenty days and 770km. There is fair wear and tear on the shoe itself. However, important to note ,there is a loss of compression by around 5mil on the soles. This amount of compression loss will take away the majority of the shock absorbing factors . It’s important to note this loss of compression will not ,in my opinion lead to more injuries. (Read my article on RUNNING FOR CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH). This amount of compression loss happens with all shoes irrespective of the brand or the km covered by the six month mark. This does not render them useless. I personally use a rotating system, I will continue to use my old shoes for runs less- than ten km (just because they are well used doesn’t mean they are useless) until my next purchase at around six months and only then will I throw them away. My new shoes become my backup and the cycle starts again. Remember 6 months or 700km for dedicated runners. Even then they will still be ok for short distances or walks. Until next time.... Aim for a steady state of fitness that reflects your wants, needs and desires. Heath and fitness are only achieved by the accumulative effects of regular DAILY physical exercise. Until next time stay fit, have fun, hurt no one.
