10.01.2022 Chapter 5 Why am I sometimes sore after a massage? It is common to have some mild pain and even slight swelling after receiving deep corrective massage. This is called therapeutic inflammation.... When a massage therapist performs deep tissue massage to break up adhesion in the muscle and relax and lengthen the muscle, the effect can be similar to a workout at the gym for that muscle. The result is that you are tender to the touch like you are bruised for a period of time, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying an Epsom salt bath or ice to a specific area after the massage.Drink plenty of water and don't poke yourself. Metabolic waste builds up in tight muscles, and massage increases blood flow and releases these toxins into your blood stream. If you are not properly hydrated you could feel achy or even flu-like after your massage. Drink plenty of water before the massage so the muscles are more pliable and better able to take the pressure of a deep tissue massage, and drink twice the water that you usually would after the massage to flush the released toxins. Massage provides a significant amount of input to the central nervous system and the body responds to that increased information. Pain and other occasional after-effects may be the result of a system that has received more information than it can handle at that particular time. It's important to communicate with your massage therapist regarding your expectations, as well as your current state of health. Your therapist can then tailor the massage to your personal needs and desires, and make adjustments in intensity or technique as the session proceeds. 09.01.2022 Chapter 3 Lately I have had quite a few clients coming in complaining of similar, low back symptoms. Each of them have also displayed the same postural abnormalities, had severe or aching pain in the lower back after activity, sudden movement, lifting a heavy object, or consistent with someone who sits all day at a desk, these can cause muscles or ligaments stretch or develop microscopic tears. Pain location: anywhere in the low back, tailbone, lower buttock, abdomen, groin,... side of the hip Problems: low back pain, herniated disc Related muscles: quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, gluteus medius The quadratus lumborum QL muscle, which connects the last rib to the pelvis, is responsible for pelvic stability, structural alignment and a respiratory muscle. Some people with back pain also experience significant discomfort when breathing, because a cranky QL resists elevation of the rib cage, and cramps up when pulling it down firmly on exhalation. You can imagine the sense of relief people experience when this is resolved! The gluteus medius is a posterior hip (or buttocks) muscle that frequently causes pain when the QL muscle is irritated.The gluteus medius becomes inflamed as it tries to compensate for the QLs dysfunction. The two important muscles, the QL and the gluteus medius, may play a bigger role in causing pain than most people realize. If you strain either of these muscles, the pain can be severe and debilitating. Dysfunction in these muscles can lead to severe and debilitating low back pain. Recommends treatment massage should focus on the QL muscle while the client lie on side or stomach for 20 minutes on each side combining with 20 minutes of massage on the gluteus medias also simultaneously stretching. I have been able to provide significant pain relief to clients by using these massage techniques in only one session. See more

02.01.2022 Chapter 6 Shoulder Pain At Night: Clients will often complain of shoulder pain at night that disturbs their sleep. Trigger points in the infraspinatus muscle make sleeping on either side nearly impossible. If you lay on the affected shoulder the weight of the body will compress the trigger points, but if lay on the pain-free shoulder the upper arm hangs down and painfully stretches the involved infraspinatus muscle. Trigger points in the supraspinatus muscle may also produce... an aching pain at night, but one that does not usually disturb sleep. Of all the shoulder pain trigger points that I treat in my practice, the infraspinatus trigger points are the most fun. Many patients think that Im some kind of magician when I recreate the pain in the front of their shoulder by pressing into their shoulder blade. Its not magic, of course, its just good myofascial pain science.As you see in the pictures, this muscle can contain three trigger points, arranged in a triangular pattern within the belly of the muscle. In my experience, the lower trigger point is the most common and most active in shoulder complaints. Referred pain from these trigger points is experienced deep in the front of the shoulder joint and along the upper arm. The pain may also spill down into the forearm and hand regions in severe cases.
