12.01.2022 We heard a few whispers....what is an OT & what do they do? Well here we are... An Occupational Therapist (more commonly known as an OT) is an Allied HEALTH Professional who focuses on the IMPORTANT things in peoples lives - by that we mean the things they WANT to do and the things they need to do. ... An example for you: Pictured here is a meal I recently cooked! Cooking is one of my main occupations firstly because I LOVE cooking but secondly because I do it to provide for my family. Like lots of people COOKING is something they need to do but also WANT to do. Following illness/injury/disabling events, lots of people express the desire to return to cooking a meal independently. As an OT we facilitate this INDEPENDENCE through therapeutic retraining. We focus on PRACTICE but also look at modifying the task or utilising aids to make LIFE easier. We assist individuals to meet their own personal GOALS and aspirations, with the aim of maintaining INDEPENDENCE and promoting WELLBEING. Not only do we FOCUS on the person themselves and their occupations (things they do during their day) but we also look closely at their environment. We ENGAGE and ENABLE people to access their space and enjoy their surroundings! Whether it be a grabrail to allow standing in the shower or a wheelchair to get to that SPECIAL lookout!!! So in short we look at the PERSON, their ENVIRONMENT and their OCCUPATIONS. We endeavour to facilitate GROWTH and/or recovery. #believeinyourself #maintainyourindependence #growoldhowyouwantto #occupationaltherapy
