23.01.2022 Here at That Gut Feeling, we don’t believe in quick fixes, or band-aiding a problem. If you’re suffering from aches, pains, bloating, gas, anxiety, depression - the list goes on - your body is telling you that something is up. Ignoring it won’t make it go away.... Taking Panadol or Nurofen may mask the symptoms, but it will exacerbate the problem. Yes, these ‘innocent’ meds can alter your microbiome negatively, and long term use is not ideal. You need to get to the root cause of your problem. One very common issue, that gets overlooked by so many, is food intolerances. Clear signs that you (or your children) have food intolerances are dark circles under the eyes bloating headaches frequent infections constipation and/or diarrhoea (my eldest boy use to get mucousy stools whenever he consumed too much dairy) lack of energy joint pain skin rashes sinusitis By product for your children can be poor sleep, poor behaviour and learning difficulties. Food intolerances spark an immune system response, which can initially be subtle, but may become serious over time. Prolonged exposure causes local micro-inflammation in the intestinal tissue, which slowly but surely spreads. In order to heal the gut, the offending foods must be removed.

15.01.2022 Genes are not our destiny. Think of them as little switches in our body that can be turned on or off. I have a big snoz, brown eyes, and am built like a brick $hithouse #thanksdad... Not much can be done about any of those things, unless I’m ready to undergo plastic surgery of course. But what about other genes that he has passed on to me? He passed away from a massive heart attack. Does this mean I’ll meet the same fate? I may have a predisposition to heart disease, but I have the ability to keep the genes responsible for this disease manifesting switched off. When you consume your food and beverages, I want you to think not so much about the calories, not about whether it will make you fat or not, but rather - what information are you giving your body? Is it real food? Will your body process it easily and know what to do with it? If you can’t pronounce a particular ingredient on a label, the answer is, probably not. We HAVE the ability to change our gene expression. Our bodies can do incredible things when armed with the right tools and ingredients. We just have to make sure we provide it with them.

14.01.2022 Every meal and snack you consume, or feed your family, is either supporting healthy brain function or undermining it. A few weeks back I had the pleasure of interviewing @lighterbrighteryou for my upcoming podcast. Delia has a Master’s degree in Psychology but lost her enthusiasm for the ‘talking cure’ when she discovered that what you eat affects your brain function directly, and that until the brain is properly nourished, no amount of talking will get it working optimall...y. I couldn’t resist getting my hands on these beautiful books of hers. You can currently get her Feed Your Brain cookbook for free!!!! Link in bio!

08.01.2022 When looking to heal the gut, the first step we need to take is to remove whatever it is that is harming the environment. There are a number of issues or culprits that need to be considered when doing this, but following on from my last post, we’re going to look further into food intolerances. The good news is, there is a list of foods that are usually the main offenders.... The bad news is, everyone is different (a girlfriend of mine discovered she couldn’t tolerate cashews - amongst other things), and it requires a process of elimination to determine which foods are having a negative impact on your health. Generally, an elimination diet calls for the removal of: gluten dairy eggs yeast corn soy nightshades alcohol caffeine chocolate Most people freak when I tell them this. No chocolate! No coffee! No alcohol! No way! The thing to remember is, just like you haven’t always had a problem with these foods, you can get to a place where you are able to enjoy them again (in moderation). Many find they feel much better off without them. Could you go without all of these? Which would be the hardest for you and why?
