25.01.2022 Here’s my Facebook post from 6 years ago. At least we started off hopeful! I always find the few weeks/months of memories around this time unsettling for some reason. Maybe it’s a reminder it could all happen again tomorrow? Anyway......gotta live while we’re alive ********* Good morning - here's my update.... I have the same bug as 2011. Hospital is unclear how I can get the same rare bug twice, so they think it was laying dormant in my body somewhere. It has, amongst other things, attacked my kidney, liver and my aorta is inflamed. I have fevers on and off all day and have little energy. I'm in pain on and off, find it hard to breath and sleep hardly at all (you're not surprised). Thats enough of the drama. From here, thankfully, heart surgery is not on the cards. The bug hasn't appeared in my heart anywhere that they can see. So it's minimum 6 weeks of IV antibiotics then a lifelong dose of them. I'll be in hospital until all the symptoms stop. Your guess.... I'm not probably going to respond to too much just yet - my energy comes in bursts. Thanks for your kind words, prayers etc.
25.01.2022 Shame on the South Australian and Victorian Governments. This is a heart breaking disgrace. Coronavirus: Why were these four newborns left to die? Victoria’s stage-four lockdown prevented four sick newborn babies who subsequently died from being flown from Adelaide to Melbourne to receive lifesaving cardiac surgery....Continue reading
24.01.2022 In the UK the large majority of the population is now deemed to be an organ donor unless you choose to opt out. This became law in May 2020. There are a few countries in the world with this system. What are your thoughts on this way of getting organs donated?
24.01.2022 Studies are showing that Covid 19 is infecting the heart in a lot of patients. It’s a stark warning that those with pre-existing heart conditions really do need to heed the public health safety messaging in your area. Please note that this story was bought to my attention via a mainstream media outlet in Australia, but I’ve found the story from this website so you can read it without having to have paid to read it. You’re welcome https://www.statnews.com//covid19-concerns-about-lasting-/
21.01.2022 After years of hard work by Andrew Pike and the team at Ronin Films, the documentary about Pumphead is now available for purchase on DVD. I’ve talked about Pumphead many times but as a reminder, Pumphead (postperfusion syndrome) refers to symptoms suffered beyond the physical after open heart surgery and can include (not limited to) defects with attention, concentration, memory loss, fine motor function and speed of response both mentally and physically. Click through the li...nk to check out details on the movie and pricing. Thanks for the privilege to support this doco by sharing some of my story Andrew. As you and I have discussed numerous times, we can only hope that there can be a change in the way recovery from open heart surgeries is approached in the future. All strength to your arm. https://www.roninfilms.com.au/video/858/0/13773.html

16.01.2022 I’ve posted a similar post before, but it’s 3am and I’m laying awake and just listening to how loud my heart is clicking tonight. It’s weird, disconcerting yet reassuring. I’m actually holding my phone about 5cm away from my chest as I recorded this

15.01.2022 Aortic valve replacement without needing open heart surgery has been undertaken more frequently over the last few years with great success and outcomes. To see the mitral valve is now being replaced by the same method is going to be truly life changing for millions of people over the years to come. As you know, I’ve now racked up 5 open heart surgeries and this trauma to the body is best avoided! ... I’ve screenshot the story and posted them here if you’re having trouble reading the story via the attached link. The future is going to be awesome! https://www.theaustralian.com.au//d1c06874fcc2076cdaeda608
14.01.2022 This is an interesting article about concerns of the humble cat and our health. I’m sharing it as a happy cat owner and someone who has a weakened immune system. Always make decisions you are comfortable with. Stay well
13.01.2022 On behalf of Andrew Pike, I’d like to give you an update on the forthcoming documentary, Pumphead (76 mins), a film about patient experiences after open-heart surgery. The film screened as the opening event in a national on-line Conference run by the Australian Cardiac Rehabilitation Association on Monday 10 August. The film was available to Conference subscribers for 4 days, and was presented as a work in progress because there’s still work to be done on the sound mix... to complete the film - work which will be happening next week. Response from the Conference was fabulous, and the film should really help to increase public awareness and understanding of the Pumphead syndrome. In a feedback survey, one third of the Conference attendees regarded the film as their favourite session in the whole Conference! Some of the comments were: "The movie Pumphead was fantastic!!" "Lovely to have started the conference with the patient stories in Pumphead. These have underlined the importance of cardiac rehabilitation in supporting emotional as well as physical recovery." "I have just finished watching ‘Pumphead’ movie. With my past clinical nursing experience and family members’ patient journey, I found this very relevant and much needed." "The movie screening was excellent." "Pump head was fantastic!!" The filmmaker, Andrew Pike, who has himself been living with the Pumphead syndrome for eight years, expects the DVD and selected streaming platforms to be ready in 3 to 4 weeks. You can check the filmmaker's website for details (https://www.roninfilms.com.au/video/10855/20/13773.html) or wait for further announcements on social media.

11.01.2022 A dozen white roses have been placed beneath the statue of Dr Victor Chang in memory of the pioneering heart surgeon, who passed away on this day in 1991. Today we remember the King of Hearts and the legacy that’s blossomed in his honour. Dr Victor Chang 1936-1991

10.01.2022 https://www.theaustralian.com.au//d978e9d2daa70d109158380d Olympic gold medallist Duncan Armstrong has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a heart attack. Part of Australian sporting history after a stunning underdog victory in the 200m freestyle at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, the 52-year-old underwent an emergency bypass on Tuesday and remained in the intensive care unit at a Brisbane hospital on Friday night. A known fitness guru, friends and family are reporte...d to be shocked by the cardiac arrest. The Courier-Mail reported that the former Olympian was doing fine but wasn’t allowed visitors until doctors deemed it safe for him to be moved from ICU. He is expected to make a full recovery. Ranked 46th in the world, he stormed home in the final 50m of the race in Seoul to overtake American legend Matt Biondi and win gold with a new world record time. The swim is considered a tactical masterstroke, with coach Laurie Lawrence instructing him to swim as close to the lane rope as possible allowing him to catch Biondi’s surf and beat him to the finish. Armstrong also won silver in the 400m freestyle at Seoul, along with a gold at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. In August, Armstrong admitted to The Australian that he didn’t think he would have won gold in Seoul had it not been for Lawrence. His storied career resulted in him being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Since his career ended, he has become a commentator for Fox Sports. In a podcast earlier this year, Armstrong conceded he had struggled to transition post-Olympics, saying his attempts to bring an Olympic intensity to his life had done more harm than good.
