25.01.2022 It was a huge day at the @1910_ironworks in #wildesmeadow with business partner and fellow #blacksmith Elliot from @1910_ironworks_canberra and our film maker for the day @keeleyarees who picked up some great footage of both of us at work for our social media channels, the 1910 new website and the two flat screens being installed @dirtyjanes_canberra and @dirtyjanes_bowral on the iron walls. Here, I was forging a very delicate and symmetrical building finial and weathervane o...ut of mild steel as Elliot was forging a #bespoke piece out of 120 year old stock of wrought ironWe’re both also teaching together at the @sturt_craft_centre next week too for three days. It will be truly amazing as the last day of forging is also being filmed professionally #metalsmith #blacksmith #blacksmithing #wroughtiron #wrought #artisanmade #metalart #blacksmithshop #madebyhand #madetolast #sustainableliving #selfsufficiency #locallymade #wildesmeadow See more

23.01.2022 Another huge forging day at the @sturt_craft_centre Lots of hot punching, drifting, hot cutting and scroll work!! The whole day was filmed today as well. That is, thanks to @keeleyarees for picking up some amazing footage for the flat screens at @dirtyjanes_bowral and @dirtyjanes_canberra and of course the new 1910 web site. #metalsmithing #metalart #blacksmithing #blacksmith #artisan #handmade #bespoke #artisanmade #losttrades #artisantrades #madebyhand #wildesmeadow

22.01.2022 The last day @sturt_craft_centre today and a wet but fantastic day bringing all the projects together for the students. However, I must admit I was really surprised at the quality of the work and innovation of all the students. If the students give this trial run the thumbs up I’m sure we’ll be back again in the near future#blacksmithing #handmade #madetolast #blacksmith #metalsmith #artisanmade #artisan #losttrades #metalart #wildesmeadow

22.01.2022 Here are a selection of shots from the weekend forging frenzy @sturt_craft_centre Two 1910 blacksmiths, Elliott and myself, 8 students, 6 anvils and stack of hot steel forged over 3 days Photo credit - @keeleyarees fellow blacksmith @1910_ironworks_canberra #artisans #artisanmade #blacksmithing #blacksmith #blacksmithingclass #blacksmithingtools #metalsmith #ironsmith #metalart #handforged #handmade #southernhighlands

22.01.2022 You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Here’s a student who’d never forged a scroll in his life, confidently punching them out! It’s not just what you learn, it’s how you learn to do it well...and practice, practice and then more practice, this builds confidence and accuracy over time... #hotsteel #madebyhand #blacksmithing #madetolast #artisans #metalworkers #blacksmiths #metalsmiths #wildesmeadow

21.01.2022 It was tee shirt time in the forge today, particularly in the afternoon. The boys are hot punching back plates for some very large barn door handlesThe handles have been upset on the ends and will also be hot punched for the tenonsHeavy work by hand for the students today but we’ll worth the effort re the final result...#wildesmeadow #blacksmithingclass #blacksmithing #metalart #metalsmith #madebyhand #artisan

20.01.2022 It was such an amazing day today at Sturt. The weather was kind and such a great venue with fantastic facilities, along with a terrific bunch of students. Well, it’s crunch day tomorrow with all their projects on their three day forging weekendso, watch this space, big day tomorrow #blacksmithing #blacksmith #blacksmithclasses #metalsmith #madebyhand #artisan #artisanmade #oldcrafts #losttrades

19.01.2022 I revisited and old friend today. A Juliet balcony I forged nearly 8 months ago now. Looking as fresh as the day it was installed last year. Anyway the client would now like me to forge them a set of driveway gates and an entrance gate to match. So, It’s time to pull out those scrolling templates and original drawings to design these gates. Another very nice opportunity from an old client to forge and make something special#blacksmith #handmade #handforged #bespoke #wroughtirongate #wroughtiron #blacksmithing #metalsmith #metalart #madetolast #craftsmanship #artisan #wildesmeadow

17.01.2022 A hot weekend at the forge in the #southernhighlands and @dirtyjanes_canberra on Sunday. I’m in #canberra at #fyshwick this Saturday as well and Oscar from @classicsteelanddesign will be there demonstrating our craft1910 stance is traditional Blacksmithing. Whether that’s forging a traditional or contemporary gate, balustrade, fire set or kitchen crane we promote traditional forging and quality work. Hence our brand positioning and attitude of Forging the future while restoring the past, as meticulous restoration is our trade mark. We do our homework #restoringthepast #blacksmithing #metalsmiths #artisanmade #artisans #blacksmith #blacksmithshop #craftsmanship #traditionalironwork #ironwork #wroughtiron #wildesmeadow #woodstove #woodstoverestoration #restoration

15.01.2022 Thank goodness I purchased all the old gear from the fabricators that closed down due to COVID. Why? Because to produce all the new tin pieces for a Fletcher & Son, Younger stove or in the restoration of another time traveller you can only replicate or restore these pieces close to the originals if you have similar hand operated machineryand of course the know how to use them#restoringthepast #timetravelers #blacksmith #metalsmith #sheetmetal #blacksmithing #tinsmithing #artisan #craftsman

15.01.2022 After a few tweaks this hand forged finial was adjusted for final forging session. This very delicate and unusual piece for a local client’s outdoor building will be finished this week#Blacksmithing #metalsmithing #blacksmith #handmade #finial #restoration #restoringthepast

14.01.2022 If you’re looking for wheels. Look no further. Some will be used for #steampunk pieces and #restoration the rest will be sold. There’s more coming too... #restoringthepast #rustystuff #oldmetalwheels #metalwheels #vintagewheels #vintagemachinery #vintagespareparts

14.01.2022 My leather man Trevor from @jonesandwright is doing a sensational job of helping me restore these 100 year old #blacksmith #bellows and they’re really taking shape, even though they’re evidently a challengeThese little ones are just a trial run, the next pair are 6 foot highHe also doing a fabulous job of the new 1910 leather aprons tooAvailable for sale before #christmas #bespokeleather #metalandleather #artisans #blacksmithingtools #blacksmithingshop #losttrades #metalsmith #restoringthepast #lowtech #offthegrid #wildesmeadow

14.01.2022 The old new equipment, that’s about 70 years old, is working well and now producing the past in stainless steel. So, just one more stainless steel oven to roll. Along with all the galvanised base plates, flues, bottom plates and ash traysand then we’re ready to reassemble all three of the Fletcher & Son Stovesand get them back to their owners... #vintagekitchen #vintagestoves #castironstoves #vintagewoodstoves #youngerstoves #restoringthepast #restoration #vintagerestoration #sustainableliving #repurposed #recycling #savingthepast #timetravellers #metalwork #blacksmith #metalsmith #tinsmith #madebyhand #lowtech #madetolast

14.01.2022 Sometime when you’re hand forging, upsetting, splitting and folding a complex piece, patience and accuracy are paramount to end product. And if at first you don’t suck seed, suck eggsOh, this was stainless too... #blacksmithing #metalsmith #blacksmith #metalsmith #handforged #madebyhand

13.01.2022 This is just one of the rare and interesting restoration projects for 2021. One of two 1880s Buffalo, pole crank forges to bring back into use. The cast iron bowls for the fire, tyre and operating mechanism have no definable cracks and will restore up beautifully. They’ll both be meticulously brought back to life and of course researched for missing parts and original finishes.

13.01.2022 Where time stands still...

09.01.2022 Teaching and forging this amazing gate today. 90% there now with all the hand forged pieces complete, just the serpentine top to do and a few tools to tweak, then final assembly. Once assembled I’ll forge and fit the pintles, latch and return. I’m aiming to have a client viewing at the end of the week. Then she’s off to the grit blasters and powder coasters before she’s finally installed #wildesmeadow #wroughtirongate #handmade #madelocally #metalsmith #blacksmith #blacksmithing #madetolast #bespoke #artisan #artisanmade

08.01.2022 Elliot, my business partner was busy @dirtyjanes_bowral today getting our metalwork display underway. The new flatscreen will show pieces being forged and the processes we go through in #restoration and #handmade pieces. We’ll be doing the same @dirtyjanes_canberra This footage will be changed regularly and was professionally shot and edited by @keeleyarees from #canberra While Elliot was beavering away in #bowral I was cutting and prepping steel for our 3 day intensive Blacksmithing course @sturt_craft_centre in lovely down town #mittagong

08.01.2022 The 1910 #blacksmithing courses in #canberra and #wildesmeadow are becoming very popular. This midweek course today was a private session and #fathersday present to both of themSomething they had both wanted to experience after 10 years of watching #blacksmithing on #youtube As one of them remarked while grooving his hot steel prior to twisting, l’ve learned more today than a decade of watching YouTube videos. I should have done this years ago Blacksmith class bookings in #wildesmeadow and #fyshwick are still available this side of Christmas. Or, why not give a gift of a 1910 Blacksmithing class this year. Personalised 1910 gift certificates cost you nothing too when booking#artisan #madebyhand #forgingiron #metalsmiths #sustainableliving #selfsufficient #madetolast

06.01.2022 I’m just working with a dear client on an amazing mixed media garden sculpture and installation. The sculpture will also move in the wind as the garden is a mass planting of different forms of exotic grasses and bedding plants. We’ll also be going for installed base lights for her to be lit up at night tooIt’s certainly going to be a big forging job utilising 3 or 4 different metals and finishes that require a good sized power hammer#powerhanmer #wildesmeadow #metalart #metalsculpture #metalsmith #blacksmith #artisans #blacksmith #handmade #oneoffs #artisanblacksmith #interiordesign #wildesmeadow #blacksmithingtools #blacksmithing

06.01.2022 Did you know in 1901 it cost you 4 for a set of 6 inches by one inch wrought iron Dray Tyres from a blacksmith/wheelwright? Or a Abbot buggy with all leather trimming with hickory shafts was a kings ransom from a coach builder and blacksmith at 47. The average Australian then was taking home about 3.10 shillings a week at the beginning of the 20th century. That’s an adult male too. Now a blacksmith in 1901 who was working for the man was earning maybe a tad more. So 47 wa...s close to 4 months income! You still needed to buy the harness, horse and of course shedding and upkeepNothing much has changed really, except you got lots of horse poo for your veggie garden. At 1910, we repair #horsedrawn vehicles, particularly the ironwork. Hence are amazing collection of period reference books for all types of #restoration #blacksmithing #blacksmith #restoringthepast #metalsmith #artisanmade #madetolast #sustainableliving #selfsufficient #madelocally #wildesmeadow See more

06.01.2022 We get to forge some amazing things. This another one them, a 4 sided finial of a family coat of arms that will be bolted to a roof locally to compliment the existing building. Finials were very, very fashionable in Victorian times and adorned many beautiful buildings. #finials #blacksmith #fabrication #metalwork #metalsmith #artisan #blacksmithing #madetolast

04.01.2022 I just love this period in ironwork

04.01.2022 I’ve studied, restored and driven a range of different #horsedrawn vehicles. My favourite was the sulky l had the chance to drive on a remote dirt road in the #bluemountains some 40 years ago, l also enjoyed driving that #springcart too in #littlehartley on Film set. I still enjoy restoring them, as the intricate ironwork, steam bent timber and extraordinary #drawknife work fascinate me re their pure #craftsmanship. The different smiths and carriage makers also put their own... style and mark on their vehicles too, so you can normally track dow where they originally came from. Unless some idiot has taken the shaft plates and name tags off them. Because when they do that they just destroy a piece of Australian transport history. We have three horse drawn vehicles to restore currently and parts for two more. So, if you need some metalwork restored, look no further#blacksmith #metalsmith #madetolast #madelocally #wildesmeadow #wroughtironwork #restoringthepast #horsedrawnvehicles #harness #artisanmade #artisan #handforged See more

02.01.2022 Here’s a very interesting and unique anvil that’s just come into my possession. However, I can’t find any information on the anvil or the company that manufactured it. I guess it’s a farriers competition anvil from the US? It’s cast, rings like a bell with little or no wear. Any help with its background or if anybody can tell me anything about the manufacturer l would be very grateful#anvils #blacksmith #blacksmithing #metalsmith #anvilsinamerica #farriertools #farrieranvil #vintagetools #wildesmeadow #artisan

01.01.2022 Having another crack at a #suffolklatch for a client, I’m really starting to enjoy making them. However, each one seem to turn out with a style all its ownThis style of latch is ancient and timeless. Once installed they’ll last a few lifetimes#handforged #blacksmithing #blacksmithshop #blacksmith #metalsmith #metalworker #metalartisan #artisan #oneoffs #unique #wildesmeadow #fyshwick
