01.01.2022 The green season doesn’t just bring rain and heat, there are also some pretty special animals that call Far North Queensland their summer home. Our guides have ...recently been spotting the extraordinary Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher while taking guests out and about. This brightly coloured kingfisher spends most of the year in central Papua New Guinea, embarking on the long flight in early November to take advantage of the lowland rainforests of FNQ. Here, it finds a mate and a suitable abode a termite mound on the forest floor to raise a chick. It uses its strong predatory beak to excavate a hole in the termite mound often flying beak first into it, and unfortunately some do die from the impact. Once completed the obliging resident termites get busy sealing the walls of the cavity. The kingfisher pair then raises their (up to 3) chick(s) to be as strong and healthy as possible, feeding them up with insects, frogs, snails, lizards and spiders. This maximises the chances that the offspring are independent and capable of achieving the flight back to their PNG home sometime between February and April. Keep your eyes peeled for these jewels of our tropical rainforests! #backcountrybliss #bushwalkingaustralia #kingfisher #buffbreastedparadisekingfisher #australianbirds #exploreaustralia #daintree #portdouglas #thisisqueensland #paradise
