20.01.2022 Alastair’s Scottish heritage and strong family values informed a lot his work. He was educated to believe that people were born equal and had a right to be heard equally. He was proud that you could see that principle at work through his commercial buildings in public service buildings where workers and visitors are treated equitably and where there is little hierarchy within the building. He believed that it was a genuine way of approaching humanity to believe that everybody has a say, and that everybody is equal. by Foliolio

19.01.2022 Alastair AO was the inaugural Architect of the Australian Capital Territory (2010-2016) and director of Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn. His influence on the Canberran landscape was immeasurable. Seemingly simple exteriors give way to ingenious design, which address sustainability and practical ways of existing within spaces. The Centre, signified by a soaring cantilevered awning provides an international standard conference facility, office accommodation, and four self-contained apartments for visiting academics. 17.01.2022 The application of robust colours in his buildings became a trademark of Alastair’s architecture. Alastair’s commitment to colour sprang from an experience he had in 1976 when holidaying in the south of Spain with his parents. He came across the work of Spanish architect, Ricardo Bofill, with brightly painted apartment buildings, tucked into the eucalyptus landscape of the Costa Brava. He thought the combination of bright colours and strong mass colour looked magnificent, and... when he returned to Australia he began introducing strong colour into his buildings. .
