17.01.2022 http://www.cityoflifeanddeath.co.uk/ Directed by: Lu Chuan... Synopsis: China, December 1937. The country is at war with Japan. Beijing and Shanghai have already fallen. Japanese troops arrive at the doors of the capital, Nanking. Following weeks of bombardment, local and foreign officials have fled and the city is in ruins... Lu, a charismatic Chinese General intensely determined to repel the enemy, leads his men in defense of their capital, street by street. They have little ammunition left as they face the Japanese tanks, but they refuse to leave. Mr. Tang is guardedly optimistic as he and his family flee to the International Safety Zone, where a growing number of Chinese civilians find shelter. Operated by the city’s few remaining foreigners, the zone has become a large refugee camp. Miss Jiang, a young Chinese teacher who despite the terrible carnage maintains a righteous dignity as she coordinates life in this crowded enclave, attempting to protect as many individuals as she can. Meanwhile, the Japanese are installing their troops throughout the city. The occupation of Nanking has begun. Kadokowa, an introverted and romantic Japanese infantryman, observes the many brutalities of the war, unable to delay the impending atrocities. As hell slowly swallows up the smouldering ruins of Nanking each must find a way to survive in a city where death is easier than life. DVD: Playing Time: 130 min. 14.01.2022 Another great review of Attenberg. Trevor Link in Spectrum Culture writes, "In Attenberg, Tsangari links a death and a rebirth of sorts together in a way that respects both the individual and society at large without deciding the fate of either." 08.01.2022 Attenberg is reviewed in the latest Filmink. Travis Johnson writes, "Tsangari and Labed deserve praise for constructing a character that is at once both wilfully opaque and yet achingly vulnerable."
08.01.2022 Terrific review of City of Life and Death in The Australian this week by Michael Bodey who writes: "That Lu made City of Life and Death (with some Japanese finance) is a sign of maturity for Chinese cinema. It is a blistering film with brutal re-enactments (stunningly shot in black and white) of the waste of war that compares with Saving Private Ryan and Lu's major influence Apocalypse Now. Astoundingly, though, Lu focused much of his attention on an Imperial Japanese Army ch...aracter, Kadokawa, who is a sympathetic one. That led to controversy in China yet the film became a big success there and subsequently has been embraced by the Chinese Communist Party and shown as part of the country's school curriculum. That's rightly so because this film is nuanced, intelligent and a fine example of a film culture growing up. It is harrowing but astonishingly good.
07.01.2022 Out later this month the remarkable Attenberg. David Parkinson, writing in the latest Empire, observes "the shifts from intense conversation to enigmatic dance routines make for riveting viewing." ****

01.01.2022 http://www.attenberg.info/ Directed by: Athina Rachel Tsangari... Synopsis: Marina, 23, is growing up with her architect father in a prototype factory town by the sea. Finding the human species strange and repellent, she keeps her distance. A stranger comes to town and challenges her to a foosball duel, on her own table. Meanwhile, her father ritualistically prepares for his exit from the twentieth century, which he considers overrated. Caught between these two men and her collaborator Bella, Marina investigates the wondrous mystery of human fauna.
