25.01.2022 One of two original oil on canvas board paintings by leading marine artist John Charles Allcot. Born in the UK in 1888 he studied at the Liverpool School of arts before arriving in Australia in 1912. He was commissioned to paint the H.M.S. Endeavor Entering Botany Bay April 29, 1770, and similar historical subjects. This piece depicts The SS 'Pulganbar' which was a coastal passenger liner that was one of the latest and fastest in a series of passenger liners, which operate...d north and south along the New South Wales coast, before trains, cars, roads and rail were well-developed. The 'Pulganbar' was built especially for the service from Sydney to the Clarence River for the North Coast Steam Navigation Co Ltd. It was a steel steam ship that had accommodation for almost 100 passengers. When the North Coast railway opened, the 'Pulganbar' was transferred to undertake the Sydney to Byron Bay leg. During this time, she affectionately earned for herself the nickname SS 'Plungingbar', given the numerous encounters the vessel had with bad weather. On one occasion, for example, after a particularly rough night, daylight showed her in new colours when her funnel was caked in salt from top to bottom, causing the ship to glisten white. In 1940, the SS 'Pulganbar' was a witness to a significant event in Australia's Naval history when it joined a procession of small ships to salute the HMAS 'Australia' out of Sydney Harbour. The HMAS 'Australia' was a battle cruiser that was being scrapped under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty. It was on this day that the 'Pulganbar' was open to visitors, drawing in excess of 1000 visitors on board the vessel in one day. During WWII, the 'Pulganbar' was used by the Royal Australian Navy in the New Guinea area as a support ship, before being sold to Chinese interests in 1948. After this she was twice re-named 'Yang-tse River' and 'Tamara', before being broken up for scrap in 1951. This historical painting can be viewed (along with a second Allcot) at The Antique General store Narrabeen.
