24.01.2022 Thank you to Emily and Matthew Tucker for sharing this glimpse into the beautiful family-centered pregnancy and birth they created. Little Albie was born at home in the early hours of the morning on 25/7/20 much to the delight of his four older siblings watching on. It was a night full of joy and excitement as they shared this special family event, just as theyd shared & helped in all of Emilys pregnancy visits. How we love family homebirths .

23.01.2022 Leni Louise Bett was born at The Birth House on Saturday, July 25th at 11.31pm, weighing 10 pounds 2.5 ounces. Everything progressed as it was meant to and we were given the space and encouragement to allow that to happen naturally which is exactly what we were hoping for. We welcomed our little girl in the most beautiful way with incredible support from our midwives. This was our first birthing experience where we truly wouldnt change a thing. Thank you so much to the team at The Birth House who offer women and their families such wonderful care and love. ~Amy Congratulations to Amy, Jay and big sisters, Lilly and Annie.

21.01.2022 We are so pleased to be hosting this very valuable workshop, facilitated by the brilliant Fiona Hallinan.

21.01.2022 On this night two weeks ago, little Chase peacefully joined his mum, dad and big sister in the quiet of their own home. Mum Tanielle lay resting on her couch as labour built, her midwives suspecting that as soon as she was ready to change positions, her babe would be born. Sure enough in her timing, the warm water of the birth pool called and two contractions later she received her son into her arms . Heartfelt congratulations Tanielle, Daniel and big sister Alex. Precious photos captured by Jessica Henderson Photography.

21.01.2022 Meet gorgeous Henry . Rheanna and Trent are happy to share the birth of their first son Henry, born on the 27th June. Henrys birth was a planned homebirth and Rheanna laboured powerfully at home and brought him so close to earthside. The need to transfer became evident and a timely safe transfer was made to University Hospital Geelong where Henry was born very soon after arrival. This new family of three were home together later that day . Thanks to our colleagues at UHG for their collaborative care.

21.01.2022 Infant first aid & CPR courses are back!

19.01.2022 Three gorgeous boys born within 24 hours this weekend keeping our midwives happily busy . Congratulations to these special families!

19.01.2022 If youve been following us for a while you know how much we love and value skin to skin time with Dad in that early time after birth . This is Fraser with his firstborn son, Banjo . . . Dr. Nils Bergman recently presented research that shows just 30 minutes of skin to skin with dad actually rewires dads brain. Mothers have the advantage of the natural hormonal changes during and immediately following birth, especially the hormone oxytocin, to help their maternal instin...cts kick in. For dad, when he spends time skin to skin with his newborn hormonal changes occur including a rise in dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for many things including pleasure. A rise in dopamine plus the release of oxytocin means dads brain creates a positive association with close interaction with baby. It seems that skin to skin with dad can help dads natural parenting instincts to kick in. #skintoskinwithdaddy #justborn #oxytocin #dopamine #midwiferycare #knowyourmidwife #thebirthhouse #geelong #newborn

18.01.2022 Just in the last couple of days Ive had four chats with lovely colleagues around the country interested in opening Birth Houses. All in different stages, one super close and others in the dreaming and vision stage. Were so hopeful to see more options like this created for women and families in Australia! #abirthhouseineverytown taken with midwife Bron in 2017 when I visited the wonderful Lismore Birth House. ~ midwife Judy

18.01.2022 At the end of October Pia Croft, one of our homebirth midwives, is leaving The Birth House and Geelong to pursue an amazing and wonderful new opportunity in another part of the state. Pia has been with us at The Birth House since the beginning, and has been attending homebirths, and births at the Birth Retreat for over 7 years. Pia was the first midwife to become endorsed in the Geelong Region, and she has attended over 300 births as a primary midwife, and countless others ...as a second midwife. She is beloved by families in this area, who she has cared for with so much love, compassion, commitment, skill, experience and respect over these many years. Pia is greatly loved too by her midwifery colleagues at The Birth House, as she is brilliant company, and very generous with her time and support, and the sharing of her knowledge and her delicious cakes with us. We thank Pia for her years of service to the homebirthing families of this region, and for her wonderful contribution to the Midwives Geelong team, and we wish Pia and her family all the very best for the future. We also thank Pias husband Chris and Pias children who have been so incredibly supportive of her, and her work as an oncall midwife, over these many years. Pia will be deeply missed by the women and families, and deeply missed by the midwives in The Birth House community, but we are also excited for her and her family as she moves into her new life in a very beautiful part of the state.

18.01.2022 Welcoming Frederick Wayne Fennell . Little Freddie was born in our Birth Retreat earlier this year on Sunday 23rd Feb, first child for Phebe and Tim. Phebe has shared a shortened version of her birth story.. My waters broke Friday 11.30pm, contractions until 3.30am (while Tim was installing the car capsule frantically ). Then I suddenly woke up on the couch at 7am ... Contractions roughly every 1-2 hours Sat, my midwife came over, she wasnt worried, so I wasnt worried. Slept 10pm-5am (woke up to maybe 4-5 contraction but then back to sleep haha) Contractions started to amp up so we started timing them at about 7am, so we headed into the birth house at about 9.30am (contractions were 3 mins apart and went for a touch over 1 min) I dont remember heaps from here as I was concentrating on my breathing & hypnobirthing stuff My body started doing its own thing - it was bloody hard, I wont go into details but I definitely said at one point its going out then back in (god that was FRUSTRATING - but looking back of course it contributed to birthing correctly and not tearing) & I cant do this (to which my midwife said calmly Well, you have pretty much done it ) My mum once said to me when you think you cant do it anymore, thats when youre nearly there - I thought about that .. and it really was true I only had 5 hours of active labour - baby arrived 2.59pm. Wont go into birthing the placenta, its a funny story but probably too much for on here. Delayed cord clamping so baby actually gets all of the blood/iron Home at 7.30 See more

10.01.2022 Welcome earthside to little Otis, born in our Birth Retreat on 25/5/20 . Were so happy for his parents Emma and Henry, and big brother Walt! Emma shares, Just three hours after we started a game of Yahtzee in bed our little star Otis landed earthside at The Birth House. In a labour that climbed quickly I felt safe, supported and loved. With a considered, gentle and powerful birth support team on both occasions, I dont think we could have given our boys a better start to life and a more sacred space for my body to unfold the way it knew how.

09.01.2022 Vernix caseosa . This gorgeous boy born at home had a generous coating of this amazing substance! Vernix is the waxy or cheese-like white substance found coating the skin of newborn babies. In Latin, vernix means varnish and caseosa means cheesy. Vernix has amazing antibacterial, moisturising & cleansing properties - so dont wash it off! Rub it in!

08.01.2022 Hannah, Paul and big sister Frankie are delighted to welcome Alice June Sultana into the world. Alice was born into her mummas arms at 8.30am on the 14th April, 2020. Hannah shares with us: "After four hours labouring at home followed by four hours rocking and moaning my way around the Birth Retreat, Alice was born on land, in the bathroom, just as her sister was three years prior. Whilst more mentally challenging than my first birth, I was able to labour uninterrupted with ...the innate knowledge that my body was capable of giving birth to another healthy baby. Of course this was possible thanks to the support of my midwives. Thank you to my primary midwife for her gentle guidance and reassurance during transition and to both women for post birth cups of tea and chats. To my supportive husband, thank you for embracing another birth journey with me, cursing and all. We are so grateful to the Birth House for allowing us the beautiful space to experience a second normal, joyful birth during the uncertain times Covid19 has bought with it. Born during a global pandemic on her grandmothers birthday and bestowed her great grandmothers name, we are sure Alice is destined for great things." See more

03.01.2022 Lets all get behind this final push for equity and choice in maternity care! Women and families deserve access to medicare rebates for homebirth. Thanks to Homebirth Australia for sharing this... The access issues that have always surrounded homebirth have been made even more fraught by the pandemic and associated economic crisis. Homebirth is a model of care that gets great outcomes, that women rave about, and that saves the health system money. Now more than ever, we need... to support women who choose to stay home - families shouldnt need to push themselves to the financial wall to do this. Much work has been done over the past few years to open up access to homebirth. A key recommendation of the Medicare Benefits Schedule review was to create Medicare rebates for homebirth. These recommendations have broad support, and hundreds of families have written in to the consultation to share stories of what Medicare rebates for homebirth would mean to them. But these needed reforms have gotten stuck in the Medicare / DHS processes - there is no timeline for when these Medicare rebates will be approved. Homebirth Australia call on Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt MP to personally intervene in this stalled process, to add Medicare item nmbers for intrapartum homebirth care onto the MBS. ***You can do likewise, by emailing the Health Minister ([email protected] ) and your local MP. Lets all get behind this final push, and help families stay home. Link to todays ABC article: https://www.abc.net.au//home-birthings-rise-durin/12491226
