23.01.2022 I'm sitting here, heartbroken at the passing of Mort Drucker. Anyone who ever read MAD would know his work and recognise his inimitable drawing style. He was the patron saint of caricature and somebody that every cartoonist (and I mean EVERYBODY) looked up to. He was also the friendliest, most helpful bloke one could meet. He always had a hug for me when we met and he genuinely loved his colleagues. 16.01.2022 Well, I didn't end up with a Stanley Award on Sunday morning (though I was super chuffed to be a finalist alongside some pretty impressive fellow scribblers)... though I did manage to leave Coffs Harbour with a trophy! My Formula One cartoon won the Sports category at the Rotary Cartoon Awards on Saturday night, which - I have to say - was a mighty pleasant surprise. And after a shocking year for us all, it was a buzz to see so many of my cartooning colleagues and friends. 16.01.2022 This Friday, The Potts, Australia's first comic strip, turns 100. Starting life as You and Me in Smith's Weekly in 1920, the strip was written and drawn by the legendary Stan Cross. Upon Cross’ retirement from Smith’s in 1939, he bequeathed the strip to Jim Russell, who changed the strip’s name to The Potts. Russell created the wily character of Uncle Dick in the 1950s to lighten the tone. By then, The Potts had started appearing as a Sunday feature, regularly read by familie...s. Uncle Dick was a stunning success and he helped propel the strip to international fame and an estimated 15 million readers. By the time Russell died in 2001, aged 92, he had drawn The Potts for 62 years unassisted which was a world record by any cartoonist. Both cartoonists are honoured annually by their peers. The annual Stanley Awards, which honour cartooning excellence, are named after Stan Cross, while the Jim Russell Award is presented for an individual’s outstanding contribution to Australian cartooning. 07.01.2022 While I miss drawing live caricatures terribly, and since they make up around 60% of my workload that's understandable, I'm lucky enough that I still have work to do. This unusual commission from a few weeks back was to be a corporate gift from an Australian CEO to his head of European operations based in Budapest, featuring the Hungarian parliament building and a seaplane! I'm not big on drawing buildings and this happens to be one of the most ornate, elaborate (and beautiful) buildings on Earth!
