25.01.2022 BREAKING: LOGGING HALTED IN 3 AREAS IN VICTORIA'S CENTRAL HIGHLANDS On this glorious morning, three forest areas are simultaneously being protected as community... groups step in to stop logging across Victoria's Central Highlands! Near Mt. Baw Baw, Forest Conservation Victoria have setup a tree-sit blockade, the Kinglake Friends of the Forests group have walked-in to stop logging at an area in Kinglake West, and in Warburton, the Protect Warburton Ranges group have a person locked onto a machine. The community has had enough! We want to see an end to native forest logging immediately. Together with a city action at Dan Andrews' office this morning, these four protests are part of an Australia-wide campaign that is unifying behind two messages: "Logging is criminal in a climate emergency" "There is NO CONSENT given by First Nations people to continue decimating this country". Elders and Traditional Owners are speaking up against the handing over of Traditional Country, Totems, Stories and Cultural Values to logging agencies without consent. "We as the First People belonging to this country have never given consent for the destruction and decimation of our land," said Lidia Thorpe, Gunnai / Gunditjmara woman. "Our Totems, Songlines and cultural identity are intrinsically linked with the bush and all living things within it," said Lidia Thorpe. "Governments have orchestrated and manufactured consent from corporations breaching the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous peoples, article 19, which states 'States shall consult and cooperate in good faith with the indigenous peoples concerned through their own representative institutions in order to obtain their free, prior and informed consent before adopting and implementing legislative or administrative measures that may affect them" said Lidia Thorpe.
25.01.2022 This woodchip carrier "Strelitzia" arrived in Eden yesterday to load woodchips. How is it possible that there are 50,000 tonnes of woodchips to load? After 80% of the forest available for logging was burnt in the summer fires!

19.01.2022 Great to see The Project cover this issue. The suggestion by NSW State owned Forest Corporation that timber supply contracts can continue to be met when 60-85% ...of some timber supply areas were burnt is absurd. There hasn't been an assessment of ecological impacts from the fires nor an assessment of wood supply impact. Forestry Corporation is undermining the long-term sustainability of the industry by ramping logging back up to pre-fire levels. This is short term thinking at its worst and the price will be paid by forest ecosystems for generations. If you want to see some of the background data to this story, check out: https://www.justinfield.org/deplorable_new_forestry_figures

15.01.2022 From Save Banyabba Koalas- see TV Clip of Stop Work Order A logging operation scheduled to begin in Myrtle State Forest, 40km south of Casino, has been postponed due to community pressure and a compliance inspection from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). We were set up and ready to block any logging machinery when we received confirmation that logging has been postponed due to a compliance inspection. This is welcome news and will give us time to raise awarenes...s for just how threatened the Banyabba koala population is from this logging. Logging the habitat of a koala population who lost 83% of their habitat in the fires is simply immoral. We are going to spend the time talking with our local communities and making even bigger plans to prevent the logging of Myrtle, Bungawalbin, and Doubleduke State Forests and protect all koala habitat of the struggling Banyabba koala population. If Gladys Berejiklian wants a legacy of saving koalas, she must immediately protect these forests. With so much habitat lost from the fires we can’t let John Barilaro continue the rampant destruction of this iconic species for his logging boss mates. https://www.prime7.com.au/news/28919-fight-for-koalas See more

12.01.2022 The new biomass briquette plant, palette mill and short log sawmill and existing woodchip plant will be the destiny for most Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven native trees. Briquettes use native forest as biomass for a low value product for heaters. Science indicates wood-fired power is more carbon emmissive than coal, especially for Australia’s very carbon dense native forest wood. This goes against the Bega Valley Council signing the Climate Emergency. Some woodchips are pine plantation but most are native forest.

08.01.2022 Coastwatchers members reporting on compliance issues ..
08.01.2022 Forestry Corporation NSW have been fined $30,000 for illegal logging in the Tantawangalo State Forest. In July 2019, I lodged a complaint with the EPA about a F...orestry Corporation logging operation in compartment 2407 of the Tantawangalo State Forest. Evidence collected showed Forestry Corporation had not protected important old habitat trees, as required under their logging license. Instead, Forestry Corporation had let unqualified logging machinery operators choose which trees should be logged and which ones would remain. This is a serious license breach by Forestry Corporation, which shows the total disregard they have for OUR State forests and the unique wildlife that called this beautiful forest home. 114ha were logged - that’s around 66% of the compartment. 9,000 tonnes of high quality habitat and feed trees were cut down, in what Forestry Corporation describe as a thinning operation. 100% of the trees cut down were sold to the Eden chip mill, where our trees were chipped and shipped to mainly China, to make disposable paper products. These important habitat and feed trees were sold to the owners of the Eden chip mill for as little as $3.72 per tonne! 114ha of high quality habitat destroyed and sold for a meagrely $33,000! The recent bush fires have burnt what remained of the Tantawangalo Forest, yet there are still some trees standing. The NSW Government now wants to allow so called salvage logging to occur in our burnt forests, where surviving trees will be cut down and made into briquettes to be burnt overseas to produce electricity. This must not be allowed to occur. Our remaining forests are too precious to be plundered in this way. Email or call these politicians and tell them you want an end to logging in our native forests. 07.01.2022 Eden Monaro Have Your Say on Climate Change - Now or Never is a great song!
07.01.2022 The questions posed to Eden-Monaro candidates make great policy & bi-election reading! See full responses at the Nature Conservation Council link: PROTECTING NATIVE FORESTS 1. Do you support moving to 100% plantation based forestry as exemplified by the Tumut industry hub, providing jobs for workers, and preserving Eden Monaro’s native forests as a carbon store and refuge for native animals that have been devastated by bushfires?... 2. Will you oppose the proposal to burn forests for bioenergy and oppose turning native forests into briquettes as planned for the Eden woodchip mill? 3. Will you advocate for cultural mosaic burning to be integrated into controlled burning regimes by the RFS, NPWS and FCNSW? 4. Will you support and fund culling of feral animals (including feral horses) from National Parks, State Forests and private lands? CLIMATE ACTION 1. Do you think climate change is an issue that the government has to tackle as a matter of urgency? 2. Do you support the Climate Act proposed by Zali Steggall and will you support a conscience vote on this bill? 3. Will you lobby for ARENA’s (Australian Renewable Energy Agency) funding to be extended for another 10 years and only be allocated to renewables projects? 4. Will you advocate for current fossil fuel subsidies to be transferred to renewables companies to encourage a faster transition to clean energy? CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMIC RECOVERY 1. Eden Monaro is a region of significant economic disadvantage. To ensure no-one is left behind in the shift to clean energy, will you support funding for the installation of solar PV and energy efficiency measures on social housing, and community facilities in Eden-Monaro? 2. Will you advocate for the provision of sufficient funding to support job creating community renewable energy projects in Eden-Monaro?
