25.01.2022 Now that the little trinket is growing stronger, I have put Aunty Lola back with them awhile. It is fortunate that Lola and Mouse didn't have their foals at the same time because if I didn't know better I would say this was Lola's foal. P.s.... the little trinket still doesn't have a name yet.... I have a few I am playing with but not locked in yet. Cinder (coals that still have spark)... Ciara ( little dark one) Trinket (a small ornament or jewel) Or ???? See more
25.01.2022 My long time, lovely friends, Robyn and Alix came to play with Mercury on Monday. Alix took these beautiful photographs. He is such a sweetheart, well put together, with super fine features and some very interesting markings. Certainly a contender for colourama ribbons.... He is not a miniature, but will grow to be small standard size. A good height for taking little ones for rides. His mother is Ruby, one from my core donkey ride team. His sire is my beautiful Banjo. This sweet heart is available and expressions of interest are open. He will be ready for his new home in August, and will be gelded, microchipped, vaccinated and registered. See more
25.01.2022 Charlie and Boots (Mercury) are totally loving life at their new home with Dale, and extended family. They are getting lots of love and plenty of walks, meeting all sorts of other critters including moo-cows and kangaroos. Their home is a sanctuary for kangaroos... so what was once strange is now roo familiar. Beautiful place, beautiful caring people... Happy donkeys happy me
24.01.2022 Billy-Bob, Piccolo, Mercury and Spice, on a lovely sunny day.
24.01.2022 Today is Mercury's first day in the big paddock. I think he is spritely enough to look after himself now.... and he made a grand point of telling everyone exactly that.
23.01.2022 The other day, when it was a bit sunnier, Michelle Knoll came and took another beautiful set of photographs. Ruby had a good old roll, Sudo sat in the long grass and Mercury had a skip about before a relaxing sleep in the sun.
23.01.2022 So here she is almost dry and fluffy and certainly finding her feet. She is actually very dark grey rather than a true black, and her dorsal stripe is clear against the dark grey. She is very inquisitive and already looking for cuddles. I do wish we could open up for visitors soon so that you could all meet this gorgeous little lady.
22.01.2022 Banjo, enjoying the sunset over Iron Brook Donkey Farm. He is such a handsome fellow with a beautiful, gentle heart. He is also the sire of all of my miniature babies. The sunsets and sunrises have been especially gorgeous this week.
22.01.2022 Some pictures from the last 24 hours. Getting about the paddock easily and meeting Sally yesterday afternoon. Little Jedda is busting to meet her brother , and he is so grown up already, I thought it was worth a try.... Jedda and the little man were keen but Lola said no, so we will try again in a few days.
21.01.2022 This post and rail fence is being painted, very slowly.... the donkeys have been "helping". Piccolo is quick to grab anything in reach, such as a rag, paint brush, or my phone. Murphy likes to stand as close to me as possible. Both have got splodges of black paint on them from their work. Lola likes to lounge around and beg for cuddles.... also distracting. Luckily there is no timeline on this job, and I do enjoy their company.
20.01.2022 Mouse and Charlie enjoying some fresh hay. As the cold weather comes in and the mountain grasses are slow to grow, it is important to keep those donkey tummies ticking over. The process of digesting hay and straw actually helps keep their bodies warm. I buy natural meadow hay from local unimproved pastures. It is not too rich and is well received by the donkeys.
20.01.2022 It is so wonderful having visitors to the farm again. I will never grow tired of showing people how to love and appreciate donkeys. Little Nelson had a busy morning being cuddled by everyone else, and then he laid down on my lap for a cuddle. I love him sooo much.
20.01.2022 Murphy's advert is finally screening. I just saw it pop up during The Hobbit. I am so proud of him. To make that short commercial, he had to stand still a very long time, with heaps going on around him. He was soooo quiet and even turned his head on cue as requested from the wing... even though that bit is not in it. Murphy is a ripper donkey
19.01.2022 Donkeys enjoying the afternoon sun yesterday at Iron Brook Donkey Farm. Grazing on the flat Goanna Grounds camping area. Mercury with his mum Ruby. Cheeky little Charlie always looking for love.... and gee he is growing to look a lot like Piccolo. Charlie is being gelded next week and will then be looking for his forever home after weaning. He was sold sometime ago but the new owner faced a personal tradgedy so he remains available once weaned. He will stay until the right human comes along. Do let me know if you think that may be you. We are all enjoying these beautiful Autumn days.
19.01.2022 Dawn at The Donkey Shop this morning. We are all up early, preparing for all the guests we have coming this month.... so great to be reopening again. If you are a return visitor, I am sure that you will appreciate all the improvements that have taken place while you have been away. It's so exciting
18.01.2022 These two gorgeous boys are soon to go to their new home. They are currently having regular walks and float practice and are just going through the weaning process. I couldn't ask for a better home for them. Dale has been our local wildlife carer for many years and has long demonstrated her love, compassion and commitment to excellent animal care. It is fabulous seeing all the preparations coming together for the boys delivery. There is a team of excited and dedicated women standing by to meet their every need. There is no question that these boys will have their every need met with thought and consideration. So just a few more weeks and I will need to let them go.... never an easy task, but much easier when you are completely happy with their future home.... and plus... they will be local, so visits will be easy
18.01.2022 Merry Christmas from The Donkey Shop Sending heartfelt donkey cuddles to you all. Hoping that the future is filled with much joy, laughter and love. Hope to see you at the donkey farm sometime soon.
17.01.2022 A freshly opened gate means play time when the world is new.
17.01.2022 Little Charlie and Boots meeting the young beef herd.
16.01.2022 Afternoon Delights.
16.01.2022 This special window is an exquisite highlight of The Donkey Shop's farm stay cabin accommodation. Just so beautiful.
16.01.2022 My pony, Rocky, is in isolation due to laminitis. (I know how he feels, as I am home with flu symptoms) but he, and I have good friends around us. Rocky normally shares his paddock with Banjo, my Jack donkey. Banjo is in the paddock next to Rocky's isolation pen. I have been finding it heartwarming to watch Banjo's genuine concern for his paddock buddy. In the afternoon when I go in to freshen Rocky's pen, Banjo always comes in too and stands with Rocky awhile.... not to play or poke, but just to stand quietly in the same space. When the poo trolley is full and I wheel it towards the gate, Banjo comes too. He knows that's his cue, and out he comes. Rocky doesnt try and follow, he knows where he needs to be. It is quite beautiful. It is nothing I have taught them, just what they are choosing to do. Makes my heart go gooey.
15.01.2022 Reflections of Donkey
15.01.2022 I just want to apologise to everyone who was planning to come, and stay or visit Iron Brook Donkey Farm over these coming weeks, or probably months. It is such a crazy time, and as you know, this is all unavoidable for now. I wanted to share this video with you to show you how beautiful it continues to be. The sunrises and sunsets have been magnificent this month. The baby donkeys so cheeky and adorable. This magical place, it's peace and serenity, and the donkeys with all ...of their wisdom and affection, are resting quietly at home like all of us. We will all be here waiting for you when you return once this chaos is over. I am sure that everyone will be in need of donkey cuddles when we reach the other side. They are saving them up for when you return. See more
12.01.2022 Two little babies helping fill the water trough. These little boys are so sweet.
12.01.2022 Jedda taking her legs for a spin. I love how when baby donkeys get the zoomies, they like to include obstacles in their route... natural barrel racers. The crackling sound was the bonfire I had just lit. She stops short when she sees the smoke billowing down the next paddock. She is a happy girl.
12.01.2022 So, after many options, and much discussion I have decided to call this little girl Jedda. My sister Susan suggested it, and the more we talked about it, the more perfect it became. The name Jedda has many meanings across many languages, including, pretty girl, black gem, wild young goose, wren, and ancestor of women.... all of which sit well with this beautiful girl. But as well as this, the name has a strong connection in our family history. Our parents bred Australian... Standard Teamster donkeys in the 1970s/80s. Our main jenny was called Jedda. This name also brings a strong connection to our late sister Janet. The more we talked about it last the more perfect it seemed. So welcome Iron Brook Jedda. See more
12.01.2022 Learning to stay out of Mum's way while she is rolling.... even Sudo comes in and says "Out the way little one!" ... but she is still getting the hang of it.
12.01.2022 Little Charlie has decided to be best friends with the biggest donkey in the herd.. clever boy. They have developed a lovely connection. Billy-bob has even let little Charlie share his food dish.... something, he usually defends strongly. I have never seen anyone else get even close to his feed dish For Billy-Bob, the only draw back is that play time never ends... even when it's rest time.
10.01.2022 So, before all this crazy stuff kicked in, Murphy was asked to do another starring appearance in Shaun Micaliff's Mad as Hell. As is usual, I wasn't allowed to say anything about it until after screening. It screened last Wednesday evening and so now I am allowed to share. You can currently still watch the episode on ABCiView. You will notice that Murphy is wearing no halter or lead rope. For this scene, it was required that he stand still and safely without it. We were in a... bar. The surface he stood on was taped down black plastic. The actors in the scene were cheering and laughing loudly as if they were in a party, including some standing directly behind him (which is why his ears are sometimes pointing in that direction ) As usual there were lights and cameras, and a smoke machine puffing and growling away near his rear quarter. Crew fanning the fog into shot with boards. The side street outside was busy, and bustling over the cobblestones. Trains click-clacked and hooted as they arrived and departed from the station next door. Sometimes I would need to adjust his position slightly, with a side step, or a single step forward or backward and then held with a hand signal. All the while, he was just so relaxed. The more that I do with my donkeys, the more I find I can do with them. I have some little processes I do, to ensure that they always feel relaxed in each new situation. The more situations we share, the easier it all becomes. Here are some photos from the day. The black and white ones are screen shots from the actual footage which aired on Wednesday. To see the episode you go to ABCiView. Look up Mad as Hell. Series 11 Episode 8. Start watching from 24 min
09.01.2022 What a lovely afternoon. The donkeys received their fresh hay, and it has shifted down to a place where the ground is harder and drier, which will be better for their hooves through this wet period. All of the donkeys were digging into the hay, ripping into the best bits.... It was sunny, and I was sore and tired, so I plonked down on the ground, right where I was, and rested awhile. Sable left the others and came straight over for cuddles. It was really beautiful. ... She nuzzled my legs, head, shoulders, back and face. She gently touched, rubbed and pressed that soft nose all over me, and stood quietly resting her head on me, so gently. It went for ages, and I allowed myself to just relish that moment with her. Sometimes you need to just set everything else aside and allow time to just exchange love with your animal. Best medicine in the world See more
09.01.2022 Magical Murphy is on the front cover of the latest Donkey Digest, along with a story about his film shoot. If you are a member, look out for it in your letter box. It's a great magazine, and I am proud of my fluffy donkey. He is such a superstar
08.01.2022 Today I took Spice out for a walk through the bush in the sunshine. She is an Australian Standard donkey and was originally wild caught from Fregon in Northern, South Australia. She always loves to get moving and exploring, out and about. When we finished our walk I let her browse around the home garden for awhile. Later when I headed out with the rope to put her away, she was sitting, enjoying the sun. I dropped the rope and decided to nestle in for a cuddle instead. It tu...rned into one of the best donkey cuddles I have ever had. I gave her a really good massage, and she nuzzled me with her nose before lying down completely. I gave her a deep massage into her neck, shoulders and body. She was making pleasurable groaning sounds that were oh so sweet. At one point I thought I would stop, but she swung her head around, pointing to the spot on her belly that she wanted done next... so I had to keep going. We have had cuddles like this before, but this one was the best. When we finally stood up, she put her head on my shoulder and got an extra rub behind the ears. I had other jobs that I should probably have been doing, but I had been fighting a headache all day, and that time was good therapy for both of us. It cements the love, connection, and trust that we share. Spending loving time like this with your animal is one of the most important parts of training, because with that love, everything is easier. See more
07.01.2022 Charlie and Mercury together. Brothers in arms. Loving sharing the paddock together with their mum and aunty. Little Charlie was gelded today. My vet, Kim Johnson does such a great job with the procedure that you would never know anything was done. Just the right amount of anaesthetic which means they bounce back in a flash. Before gelding time, I always teach my little ones to walk through the house and over unusual surfaces and to float, so that operations like this are not stressful. Teaching them to stand on the scales is also effective in knowing their exact weight for the operation. Sable gave him an extra sniff on return, but other than that, it is like he never left the paddock.
07.01.2022 The donkeys siezed an opportunity to escape into the home paddock. Oh, what fun it is to do something naughty! Makes you want to kick up your heels! I thought, how cute, they look happy, and left them for awhile.... My bay tree, olive tree, passionfruit and port wine magnolia didn't think that was such a good idea. ... All back in their usual home now. See more
05.01.2022 Little Lola's long awaited baby arrived this morning. He is certainly overcooked and therefore a more difficult birth than usual, but she got him out. The new little fella is strong, bright, alert and friendly already. He actually looks alot like Banjo which is funny because his father was actually that swanky spotted American. With things opening up now, hopefully many people will be able to meet this new little man.
05.01.2022 Happy Easter everyone from all of us at The Donkey Shop and Iron Brook Donkey Farm. I hope your Easter is filled with joy and love, and that you find wonderful and unexpected ways to share that love across the distances. Looking forward to having you all back here hugging donkeys again soon.... Hopefully in the Spring.
05.01.2022 Today was photo shoot day for the babies It was sooo great to catch up with my lovely friend Michelle. We have not seen eachother since early February, so it was great to reconnect... and the double bonus is that I get these fabulous photos. The tripple bonus is that she also gave me these awesome donkey presents (I will atrach photo in the comments) As you can see I got mobbed by the donkeys. Both Jedda and the little fella like to have a snooze on my lap. Donkeys reall...y fill your heart with love and contentment, and Michelle captures this so well. All this in the warmth of sunshine. What a beautiful day. Thank you Michelle, looking forward to our next catch up. See more
04.01.2022 Baby donkeys are good medicine. They make me laugh, and that is brilliant medicine.
04.01.2022 Now that the boys are separated from their Mums. They get to help me with the gardening... Fortunately Winter is pruning time. We have also been going for walks in the forest. All of this extra activity leads to plenty of sleepy time in the sun. Yes, they are getting extra cuddles.
04.01.2022 Good Morning Some little snap shots of the gorgeous girl. She is really cuddly now, but her Mum insists on her well deserved cuddles too.... So with a donkey in each hand, it is hard to catch photographs.
03.01.2022 Today was Jedda's first day in the home paddock with the halter on. All the family came to check in on what was going on, and make sure that the little one is OK. I love how donkeys show concern, curiosity, affection, empathy and consideration for eachother. I love watching the body language between the family at times like this. And what a beautiful day to do just that. The halter isn't a great fit yet, but it was a stsrt, and she wasn't too grumpy about it.... She is super sweet and gentle. I love her sooo much. See more
03.01.2022 Good Morning Donkey People. A little sweetness to lighten your day.
02.01.2022 Having her own roll. Through this gloomy weather, she is such a ray of sunshine
02.01.2022 These lovely ladies are heavily pregnant. So in the silence of isolation we are awaiting the arrival of two little bouncy ones. As many of you know I usually use my sweet Banjo as the sire... but this time I have done something a bit different. Both of these girls have been served by a fabulous Imported American Jack called GM Conrads Untouchable. He is the stunning black and white one in this photo. He is 31 inches tall. These jennies, Mouse and Lola are both winners of rib...bons. Two of Mouse's previous foals, Fiesta and Squizzy have gone on to win champion ribbons of their own. There is a story to the reason I have used this sire. He came to Australia, being imported by Malakai miniature donkey stud, with the intention of staying to be their Jack, but a big storm in America saw the stud he came from lose several donkeys to lightening, and they hoped they could have him back, which they kindly agreed to do. Miniature donkey genetics are still a relatively small pool in Australia, and so there is benefit to introducing his genetics to the Australian herd. So I had him serve my girls while he was in town. I can't wait to see what is cooking in their bellies, but I am sure it is going to be something special. I don't pre sell, because with nature, you don't know what will happen.... and I may even keep one... But if you would like to be notified of the birth, please let me know. (P.S. Banjo is not impressed that his girls got knocked up by some Swanky Yankee fly-by-nighter) See more
02.01.2022 This little girl came into the world at a very considerate, daylight hour 11.43 this morning. Not the greatest of weather but Mum had the sense to deliver her in the shelter. Both are doing well. Many more pictures to come.

01.01.2022 Just a donkey winding up the horses
01.01.2022 Nothing heals the soul like hugging donkeys. Murphy and I had a particularly beautiful time today Love that donkey I am sure that he misses all of the adventures, interactions, children and rides of our usual schedule. Meanwhile, I will hug him as best I can. X
01.01.2022 This Video is being screened live on the FB page of DONKEY RESCUE INTERNATIONAL at 10am (EST) on SAT 2 May. Please watch, if you care about our wild donkeys.
