25.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Any form of communication should be transferred as if your reader were being plugged into the matrix. The transfer of knowledge is immediate, straight, direct, and succinct. No questions need to be raised by the reader because all questions have been preempted. Once finished, your reader, Neo, should confidently be able to say: I know Kung Fu (or words to that affect). Contact me at theessaywhisperer.com if you feel that your reader is not learning Kung Fu, or if you think you are currently in the matrix.

21.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: when writing an academic work, a creative writing piece, or indeed any piece of writing, remember that you are initially explaining the ideas to yourself so that you understand them - this is the first step in writing. However, the next, equally-important step is to then explain the ideas to your reader so that they understand your understanding. For more helpful writing tips, contact the Essay Whisperer at www.theessaywhisperer.com or email [email protected].

18.01.2022 The GAMSAT March 2019 will be held on Saturday 23 March 2019. This might seem like a long way away, but there are the interruptions of Christmas and New Years, and, of course, work and study. More importantly, as most of you will know, the GAMSAT is not an easy exam! Previous candidates I have worked with have been encouraged to write 10-20 (or more) practice essays to get themselves prepared for Section 2: Written communication and is not something you can leave to the last minute, especially if Humanities is not your strong area. My preparation sessions can help you tackle the quotes and write a clearly-structured and thoughtful essay. It is never to early to get started.

18.01.2022 So, how's your punctuation? Is today Mothers day, Mother's day, or Mothers' day? Post your response and the correct (or best argued) answers will be rewarded with the 'Stamp of Pedantry'. If you are unsure of what day it is, or whether you are already pedantic and don't need a stamp, then visit https://theessaywhisperer.com/ for the answers

17.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Do rhetorical questions have a place in essay writing? The short and long answer is sometimes. However, before using a rhetorical question ask yourself why you are using it. Indeed, consider what the rhetorical question does in the mind of the reader. When you ask a rhetorical question, you are at the same time answering the question, by prompting an obvious response this is why it is rhetorical. But if you already know the answer and ostensibly yo...ur reader does too, then maybe you are simply slowing down the reading process. Moreover, if the answer is not obvious, do you want your reader to begin thinking about a response? Again, the answer is implied by the rhetoric and you do not want your reader to think. So always ask yourself, rhetorically or not, do I need to state this claim as a question, or should I just get on with it and tell the reader what to think directly (which is what you were going to do anyway)? If you have questions, rhetorical or not, on style in writing or irony in writing, contact me at theessaywhisperer.com. See more

16.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Did you know that objects can 'own' things - not in the materialism-is-bad kind of way, where things you own end up owning you, but in the correct-punctuation-is-good kind of way, such that they need a possessive apostrophe. For example, when talking about the tyres on my car, I must write my car's tyres (my cars' tyres if referring to more than one car). Here's another example: "The only explanation is that the Femantle Dockers' boots' laces have been tampered with." If you need help understanding punctuation, or if you feel that your car has made you its possession, or if you follow the Dockers, then check out my website www.theessaywhisperer.com or call 0422061021

16.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Although most of what we write is on our computers, phones, and tablets, tertiarty, GAMSAT, and STAT exams still require hand-written responses. Because of this, it is crucial that you work on your penmanship to make your writing ledgible. In my own experience of marking exams, the grade never goes up if I can't read it - it can only go down, regardless of how brilliant your response may be.

09.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Unlike the detective novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Poe, and Agatha Christie, an essay should be full of cues, not clues. For all of your tutoring or editing questions, or lively chats on detective fiction contact me at theessaywhisperer.com

08.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: When writing an essay, you may want to think about your "pacing", by which I mean how fast you move through the ideas and concepts you are discussing. You need to be aware that some ideas and concepts may be commonly understood by your examiner/reader which means you can move past them rather quickly; if you don't, you may be missing the bigger picture and wasting precious words. Other ideas and concepts will need to be discussed in more detail and therefore you will need to slow down and take some time to unpack what you are claiming. This is important from an examiner/reader's point of view as those who move quickly past the bigger concepts might be seen as bluffing their way through so as not to rouse suspicion.

08.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: When you have finished writing an essay, report, or letter, be sure to read it aloud. The way we say things - the sounds, the pauses, the breaths - is an indication of how we should punctuate what we say in writing. You hear where sentences need commas, or are too long, or where sentences aren't even sentences at all. This also reminds us that writing as communication is not different to speaking (except, of course, for facial features and intonation); so write as if you were talking to someone right in front of you, whilst taking into consideration that they can neither hear nor see you (wryly winking emoticon).

05.01.2022 Enjoy some Friday fun!

05.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Our difficulties in written communication often stem from our inability to recognise that the knowledge we have on a subject (represented by the red circle) is far more detailed and extensive than what we can actually communicate in writing (represented by the zebra circle). Indeed, we often write as if our reader has the same red circle of knowledge, when in fact their only knowledge may be the zebra circle that we are communicating to them. This is what leads to so much misunderstanding. We must necessarily communicate in zebra circles; the skill of the writer then is recognising its limitations, and that their red circle of knowledge is not the same as their reader’s. For more writing tips, contact Brett at [email protected] or check out the website theessaywhisperer.com.au

03.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Contrary to popular belief, we are not inherently good writers or communicators. We assume we are as for the whole of our lives we have talked or written to communciate our thoughts and ideas to others. However, written communication is a skill that takes a great deal of practice. From personal experience, my writing in my first year at uni was unequivocally terrible (and certainly embarrassing), but it steadily improved with each semester, from my undergrad, to my PhD, and beyond. Mine was a long and arduous process of trial and error, and I learned a great deal, albeit the hard way. But why don't you save yourself some time and contact me today at [email protected] or visit my website www.theessaywhisperer.com and fast track your written skills to get higher grades sooner, rather than later.

02.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Exams exemplify an existential experience. When you sit down in front of the closed exam paper, you experience the complete freedom of no longer being able to learn another thing. Then, following this blissful moment, when you open the paper, there is the less-enjoyable experience of sheer vertigo and angst when you realise that you are far less prepared than you had originally thought (most likely because of too much existential freedom!). For help in limiting your exam angst, or if you want to know more about existential dread, then email me on [email protected], or call 0422 061 021, or check out my website theessaywhisperer.com.au.

02.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: Always ask your tutor or teacher questions about your assessment pieces BEFORE they are due. I am always amazed at how incredibly insightful and pertinent my students' questions are once their graded assessment pieces (with extensive, now redundant, feedback) are returned. If you have questions about your assessment pieces, then contact me ahead of time at https://theessaywhisperer.com/

01.01.2022 The Essay Whisperer says: If friends and family keep telling you that your writing is awesome, pure genius, breath-taking, but your grades say otherwise, it might be time to seek an editor's professional input. Editors are immune to the biases of unconditional love and are therefore far more likely to improve your results. Contact the Essay Whisperer at www.theessaywhisperer.com if you have loving but sometimes less-than-honest friends and family.

01.01.2022 Suffering from the scourge of Writer's Block? Can't figure out what the first line, first paragraph, first essay should be? If so, contact The Essay Whisperer at [email protected], or call 0422 061 021, or check out my website www.theessaywhisperer.com, and we can get you started.
