25.01.2022 FOOD, DEMOCRACY, TRANSPARENCY AND GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS A 'Green Arc' of SA local government Councils is applying to the state government, to PRECLUDE the growing of GM CROPS in their areas from November. The question is whether the Minister will respect the wishes of the people. EMAIL THE MINISTER and tell him to listen to the people and respect role of local government ATTEND THE COMMUNITY ACTION on Tues 13 Oct, 12noon-1pm on the steps of PARLIAMENT House... Councils have recently consulted with their communities, particularly including food growers and processers, as well as the community at large. This has been a huge task, made even more onerous by the pandemic and associated financial stringency. Councils asking for a change to Non-GM (PLAYFORD, GAWLER, BAROSSA, ADELAIDE HILLS, MT BARKER, ONKAPARINGA, YANKALILLA, ALEXANDRINA, VICTOR HARBOUR and potentially more) have combed through the polls, submissions, the Anderson and Mecardo reports, the Thomas Elder report, PIRSA agronomic and market information and marketing and academic papers provided during the consultation. They have gathered further relevant evidence including information from the people operating the markets for Australian products overseas and domestically, accurate values of exports, and detailed explanations of the way in which trade and marketing actually operates. Many have accepted delegations from organisations or individuals pro and anti GM and some have conducted public forums. The information in letters, reports and submissions have been reviewed by staff and in some cases independent experts to be sure the elected members of Council were fully informed and could act in the best interests of the community. Following Council decisions , letters of request and consultation reports have been presented to obtain the approval of the Minister (before which he must consult with the GM Crops Advisory Panel, a group clearly dominated by professionals and academics with interests in Genetic Modification and agribusiness). Having seen a number of the draft council submissions to the Minister, I can assure readers of their thorough, impartial content in terms of explaining that becoming Non-GMCrop areas will be most beneficial in terms of marketing and trade. Having supported the Bill through Parliament, it is NOW INCUMBENT ON THE GOVERNMENT TO HONOUR THE PROCESS. https://www.facebook.com/events/387824129259832

21.01.2022 GENETICALLY MODIFIED ADELAIDE ? With the politically-driven end to the genetically modified crop moratorium 'CLEAN, GREEN ADELAIDE' WILL BECOME 'DIRTY, GM ADELAIDE' unless the city and suburban councils get their act together quickly. They have just weeks to show the SA Minister of Primary Industries that they will be financially better off as ' NON genetically-modified crop areas'. Action is needed NOW as many COUNCILS SEEM TO HAVE simply IGNORED THE REQUIREMENT TO CONSUL...T WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES and demonstrate that they will be better off in terms of marketing and trade if they intend to request 'Non-GM area designation' Polls and research worldwide demonstrate clearly that MOST PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO EAT GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD and in this case we are relying on our councils to help to stop the spread of GM into our food chain. Luckily there are peer-reviewed reports of current and future food markets showing that NON-GM food demand is rising at > 16% annually and lifting prices for Non-GM products that we can grow and process in SA. There are also specific reports from our Department of Primary Industries on variety yields and profitability that show Non-GM varieties deliver better profitability to our farmers than GM varieties. Daily prices on grain markets show certified Non-GM canola is commanding a premium of 12-19% over GM canola. But this is not just a matter for farmers! Around Adelaide there are breweries, flour mills, bakeries, ice-cream makers, butchers, restaurants, wineries, exporters, smallgoods manufacturers, our largest pasta manufacturer, biscuit makers and retailers who deal directly with food, and the $7.6B tourism industry that uses the hook of Adelaide's clean, green food and fine and wine, to fill festivals like Tasting Australia, WOMAD, the Festival of Arts, Tour down Under and many regional events. Spare them the problem of GM contamination and contact your council today. We can send you dot points and references to help you compose something convincing, even if it is brief THE DECISION TO BE A 'NON-GM ADELAIDE' STILL LIES WITH THE PUBLIC. If you do nothing, your council may well do nothing....and automatically become GM forever. There will be a ZOOM information session on Thursday 30 July at 7.30pm about the issue and how citizens and community groups can show the councils how they can capitalise on SA's green image and premium markets for NON-GM food, wine and environment. Those interested should contact foodforest@bigpond.com by email to request a link to the session. Please get your networks moving quickly and save SA food

17.01.2022 END OF THE BIG DRY! Many of you have been hanging-out for the release of our 2018 MATARO (MOURVEDRE) and it is one of 2 extremely different red wines we'll show to the World for the for the first time tomorrow at the Adelaide Farmers Market. Yes they are all Certified Organic and Ultra-low Preservative, and qualify for important places in a climate-change future, but they have vastly different bouquets and palates ... MATARO - A wine with big character that stood up to the extreme summer magnificently and dodged a bushfire that swept to our west without imparting any fume' character. What it has got, is some lavender and musk on the nose, classic Mataro and cranberry on the palate with a bit of toffee on the finish. HOME BLOCK TEMPRANILLO - Friendly red-brick and fruity with hints of mulberry on the palate and French oak on the finish. Extremely drinkable! At $137.50 a dozen its a steal!

07.01.2022 DEMOCRACY IN THE BALANCE AS GENETIC MODIFICATION 'SMELLY STITCH-UP' PROCEEDS A mockery is about to be made of democracy as the Liberal Government pushes through its Genetically Modified Crop plan for mainland SA which will essentially allow any type of Genetically Modified plant approved by the Australian Gene Regulator to be grown - from Apples to artichokes and wheat to tomatoes.. Essentially no consultation has been facilitated between the Minister of Primary Industry an...d the public or the Minister and Councils who have applied for Non GM designation Primary Industries staff have been forbidden to provide information about GM crop growing The GMCrops Advisory Committee is stacked with members who may be personally or professionally advantaged by the introduction of GM crops With a miniscule buffer separating paddocks of GM from Non-GM crops, incursions of GM genetic material are inevitable, causing contamination that will lead to the downgrading of crops and the loss of income and, for some farmers their Organic certification Detailed consultations were carried out by Councils, according to legislation to give them a role in determining whether their areas would benefit from Non-GM designation or not. Detailed reports were presented to the Minister by 11 councils showing that net benefit (and also showing most respondents believed that net benefit would accrue) The Minister announced that the net benefits described by councils had not met benchmarks set by the Advisory Committee and therefore their requests were refused At no stage in the legislation or during the process had any reference been made to 'benchmarks' or how they may be achieved The Minister has consistently made false claims stating that SA mainland growers do not receive premium prices for Non-GM crops Listen to GRAHAM BROOKMAN explain how Non-GM canola growers have been systematically receiving premium prices for years and how segregation of GM and Non GM crops in adjoining properties LETS EVERYONE DOWN https://radioadelaide.org.au//non-gm-farmers-lose-rights-/ WRITE TO THE PREMIER AND TELL HIM TO SCRAP THE CURRENT PROCEEDURE AND RUN AN EVIDENCE-BASED PROCESS WITH AN INDEPENDENT COMMISSIONER premier@sa.gov.au YES, IT WOULD MEAN AMMENDING THE LEGISLATION Listen to Veterinarian and farmer Cathie Harvey describe the broad aspects of the Non-GM economic advantage http://radioadelaide.org.au//councils-petition-to-remain-/ WRITE TO THE PREMIER AND TELL HIM TO SCRAP THE CURRENT PROCEEDURE AND RUN AN EVIDENCE-BASED PROCESS WITH AN INDEPENDENT COMMISSIONER premier@sa.gov.au
06.01.2022 A NON-GM JEWEL SHINES IN ADELAIDE The Adelaide Farmers Market makes no bones about it....'We have the freshest, purest food available in South Australia. With over 120 stalls we have unbeatable variety, from fabulous coffee, brilliant bakeries and fantastic fish to wonderful wine and brilliant beef. AND ITS ALL NON-GM! The rules of the market have always included a Non-GM clause, and in coming months and years the rules may be tested, as more GM plant varieties are released ...into the environment by the Federal Government and are planted in SA under recently adopted legislation. If you don't particularly like the idea GM plants growing in your neighbourhood and finding their way into your food, please write to your local council. Each council has the right to apply to the Minister for Primary Industries to designated Non-GMcrop area. Jump onto the http://www.gmfree.org.au website, have a look at all the reasons why you don't want your council to welcome GM plants or processing and hit TAKE ACTION. It will invite you to send a message to the mayor of your council (and as many other councils as you like). Its really quick. And don't forget the great food available at the Adelaide Farmers Market tomorrow 8.30-12.30. While you are there, drop into the 'GM-free STALL' and have a chat about this important issue. Many councils are ignoring the opportunity to be NON-GM; They need to be URGED TO HAVE A CONSULTATION with their communities and APPLY for NON-GM designation TRIVIA for the day - If all the canola grown in SA last year was GM, it would have cost farmers >$15M in lost premiums for NON-GM standing.
