23.01.2022 Of the 7 goals from regained in the Final 3rd, 3 were from clearances from the penalty area, 1 was after a corner kick, I from giving the ball away, 1 from intercepting a pass and 1 from a throw in.

21.01.2022 Goals from regained possession in each third of the field are as follows: 6 from Back 3rd, 5 from Middle 3rd and 7 from the Final 3rd.

18.01.2022 Of the 38 goals in total 4 were scored with 6 passes or more, it makes you think about why possession is so important, doesn't it!. I'm an advocate of possession based football, always have been, but if it doesn't lead to scoring goals that often what is the main benefit? This trend has been like this for over 40 years.

15.01.2022 Here's another surprise, of the 6 goals from regained possessions in the Back 3rd, 5 of them were scored with 5 passes or less, emphasising the importance of speed in transition play.

13.01.2022 In Open Play there were 4 goals without a pass being made, e.g. Spain's 3rd goal which was scored after regaining possession from a clearance and the shot was taken first time from just outside the box.

10.01.2022 There were 10 goals from between 1 and 5 passes and 4 goals from 6 or more passes. Spain scored another goal inOpen Play v Portugal from a regain in the Back 3rd and did it with 2 passes. Their 3rd goal was a FK played into the box involving 3 passes.

09.01.2022 From the 20 Set Plays, 7 Penalties, 5 Corners, 4 Direct Shots from Free Kicks and 4 from Fk's played into the penalty area.

06.01.2022 Of the 18 scored in Open Play, 4 were without a pass made, 10 were from 1-5 passes and 4 were from 6 passes or more. Here is an example of a Zero Pass goal from a regain in the Final 3rd after a clearance. Interestingly both of Spain goals in Open Play were from a '0' Pass and a 2 Pass move.

01.01.2022 I am working on doing the same style of analysis for attempts at goal, which on average are between 18 and 30 per game so I have quite a lot of work to do to guarantee accuracy of coding. When I have done it I will share some more information. https://www.thefootballcentre.com.au/
