02.01.2022 POST SHOW OVEREATING AND DOING MULTIPLE SHOWS The contest season is fully underway and many people have plans to do 3 or more shows. How many times have you see...n someone do a string of shows in a row and just look worse and worse from show to show. What went wrong? Typically this is completely due to the damage done 24-48 hours AFTER each show. This can completely make or break a season. The first thing you have to consider is that we all lose muscle while dieting. It is common but our goal is to minimize it as much as possible. So when you roll into your first show, you are lean and have retained as much muscle as possible. Now let's say that after your first show you think "I have 5 weeks until my next show so I'm going to enjoy myself tonight.". People will believe that with so much time until their next show that they'll have plenty of time to lose any weight they gain in their post show celebration. Because of this, it's not uncommon to see people's weight come up 4-10 lbs in the day or two after a show. Some of this is, of course, just glycogen and water. However, some of it is not. With a gain like that there is surely some fat gain there. Since muscle takes time to build, you can be certain that there is likely ZERO muscle growth that will occur in 24 hours. In this example, let's say our competitor competed at 160 lbs. Post show he enjoyed himself a bit too much and his weight spiked up to 167 lbs. in the two days after. Once he gets back on track for a few days the water weight comes off and now he is back down to 163 lbs. He thinks, "this isn't too bad, I only gained 3 lbs of fat and I still have 5 weeks to lose those 3 lbs". Here is the problem with that. Now our competitors must re-lose 3 lbs of fat that he already worked so hard to lose in the first place. The leaner we are, the more likely we are to lose muscle. When he lost those 3 lbs the first time, he likely had to sacrifice some muscle to get it off. Now he must lose those 3 lbs again and will lose even more muscle to get it off again. So now our competitor will grind off those 3 lbs to get back to his original weight of 160 lbs, he will look WORSE at this weight than the first time he was there because he has even less muscle now. So the competitor will look softer, and smaller than before. If this situation plays out over the course of a couple of shows then the competitor will look WORSE and WORSE at every show. However, if you can enjoy a moderate meal post show and then get back to business the next day, we could instead bring food up in small and proper increments going into the next show. This means rebuilding some lost muscle tissue. Getting leaner, and looking fuller! This can play out over a few shows and you can just keep looking better and better! Don't let a few hours of eating flush your whole season down the drain. If you have a string of shows the goal MUST be kept in mind to improve each and every time out.
