25.01.2022 HMV GRAMOPHONE HMV stands for His Master's Voice, the title of a painting by Francis Barraud of the mixed Terrier, Nipper listening to a cylinder phonograph, which was bought by the Gramophone Company in 1899. For advertising purposes this was changed to a wind-up gramophone, and eventually used simply as a silhouette. The Gramophone Company was never officially known as the HMV or His Master's Voice Company. In 1921, the Gramophone Company opened the first HMV shop in London. In March 1931, Gramophone merged with the Columbia Graphophone Company to form Electric and Musical Industries Ltd (EMI). In 1921, the Gramophone Company opened the first HMV shop in London. Nipper the dog lived from 1884 to 1895 and is honoured in England with a celebrated grave marker.

24.01.2022 DO YOU REMEMBER THE CHOCOLATE WHEEL? This is the Dissolvenator, a self-contained system that converted sewerage matter into a sterile solution. It consists of a toilet pan mounted on a cylindrical tank. When the lid of the toilet seat is lifted a geared mechanism turns the matter in the tank which is converted by a combination of agitation and the chemical action of caustic crystals. From the tank, the solution would be discharged into an underground sump and from there into ...the soil. The Dissolvenator was effectionately known as the 'Chocolate Wheel' for obvious reasons. It was made by the Hygeia Sanitary Co. Pty Ltd, of 126 Bridge St, Sydney, from 1945 until around 1978. Fun fact: Hygeia was the Greek God of good health. See next post for a video of the Dissolvenator in action. Please Like & Share this post with your friends. The Glen Museum is open this Saturday and Sunday 11am to 3pm. Rgds Dennis

19.01.2022 I’M NOT TELLING YOU A FURPHY! In Australian slang a ‘furphy’ is an unbelievable exaggerated story. The origins of this saying come from World War 1. Furphy water carts became gathering places where the ANZAC soldiers took a break, had a drink of water, swapped gossip and told stories. The first Furphy Water Cart was made between 1878 and 1880, with establishment of the J Furphy Foundry Works in Shepparton, Vic. Few homes of the time were designed to collect rainwater from the... roof and water had to be taken to horses working in the field. In 1895, John Furphy added a short rhyme with a strong message to the cast ends. It read "Good, better, best never let it rest till your good is better and your better, best." John's son, William added a Pitman shorthand inscription in 1910, which translated tells the reader that "Water is the gift of God, but beer and whisky are concoctions of the devil, come and have a drink of water." The Glen Museum has a Furphy Water Cart in the outside front display area. It does not have the Pitman shorthand so was made between 1895 and 1909. Come and see the Furphy Water Cart at The Glen Museum this coming Saturday and Sunday 11am to 3pm. Rgds Dennis

19.01.2022 STRESSFUL DAY? WHAT YOU NEED IS A CUP OF TEA, A BEX AND A GOOD LIE DOWN. Bex was a strong analgesic (pain reliever) popular in Australia and made from 1965 to 1977 when it was banned. It came in powder form in a small waxed paper sachet. Bex contained Aspirin 42%, Phenacetin 42% and Caffeine. It was discovered that these style of pain killers were addictive and Dr Priscilla Kincaid-Smith found that high levels of Phenacetin contributed to kidney disease. The manufacturers, ...Beckers Pty Ltd, removed Phenacetin from Bex in 1975 but this style of analgesic was banned in 1977. Heavily advertised on TV and in women’s magazines Bex used the catchy slogan What you need is a cup of tea, a Bex and a good lie down. This packet of Bex is in our Medicine Cabinet as part of the Hospital Display. It shows that it contains Phenacetin so predates 1975. Phenacetin is no longer used commercially but apparently is still used by criminal drug gangs to ‘cut’ cocaine. The Glen Museum is of course currently closed due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Stay tuned to our facebook page for a reopening date.

16.01.2022 HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE VOLUME ON A GRAMOPHONE? It's quite simple really. While a gramophone does not have a volume control as such, you can easily make the gramophone play soft, medium, loud, very loud or extra loud by changing the style of needle. In the images below you can see each of the different needles. It is recommended that a new needle be used to play each record. In that way sharp needles go into the record grooves, picking up the music and transferring it to the s...ound horn. The needles blunt very quickly and can scratch the record. The old gramophone records are 78 rpm and contain one song on each side. Quite differant from LP's that play at 33 1/3 rpm and have 6 or so songs on each side, yet are about the same diameter as old 78s. Come and see us at The Glen Museum this Saturday and Sunday, open 11am to 3pm. To support The Glen Museum please Like this post and Share with your friends. Rgds Dennis

15.01.2022 WIDER MUSEUM COLLECTION BEING MOVED TO SECURE WAREHOUSE STORAGE The Glen Museum was established by the late Charlie Pinch on his rural property called The Glen. Items on display in The Glen Museum building on Williwa St in Portland is less than 10% of the whole collection. The volunteer team is busily working to relocate the remaining collection to secure waterproof warehouse storage, sorting the collection so we know what’s actually there, photographing then carefully catal...oguing each item. Once sorted an extra exhibition space will be opened and the current building will display carefully curated rotating exhibits. Pictured are 8 of the volunteers moving 15 crates of the bottle collection plus loge items like an old poker machine, furniture, ice chests, washing machines and a plethora of other equipment. Did you know that The Glen Museum has the first computer used by the Lithgow Council? Yep, it's huge and that’s to be moved as well.

01.01.2022 NEW PATHWAYS THANKS TO GOVT GRANT The Glen Museum made the front page of Lithgow's local Village Voice newspaper this week. Thanks to the federal govt Stronger Communities Grant of $4,725 the museum was able to have wheelchair access pathways and ramps installed around the cottage, including a pathway towards the new building at the rear of the current cottage. ... This will assist in the expansion of the display with the opening of the extra building when the collection has been sorted, catalogued and extra displays set up.
