24.01.2022 Invitation to participate in the 2020 Parent Opinion Survey Dear Parents and Guardians, Our College is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our College. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst all parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, student engagement and experiences of remote and f...lexible learning. Our College will use the survey results to help inform and direct future College planning and improvement strategies. We have randomly selected a group of families and invited them to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year, the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 09 November - Friday 20 November. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.
23.01.2022 Callistemon Update: Hi Families We hope everyone is well and safe and managing to get out (safely) and enjoy some of this glorious sunshine! ... Reminder that Term Four commences on Monday 5th October. Week 1 is REMOTE LEARNING for all students (Prep - Year 6) School is only open for families of permitted workers (with a current work permit) or vulnerable families. All applications to attend onsite must be discussed with Leadership. From Week 2 (Monday 12th October) all Prep - Year 6 students will gradually return to school. We will have more information regarding this early next week. If paper pack work is required this can be collected from Callistemon on Monday 5th October between 10am - 2pm. Please note that this work is not the same work that students who are doing remote/online learning are doing. We would prefer as many students as possible participating in online learning with their teachers. We would like to see as many students as possible participating in online learning leading up to their return to school in Week 2. Stay safe and we cannot wait to see you all very soon!

23.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK We acknowledge and pay respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which we are meeting. We pay our respects to elders’ past, present and emerging, and acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the first people of Australia. They have never ceded sovereignty and remain strong in their enduring connection to land and culture. We acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contribution t...hey make to the life of The Grange P-12 College, our community and region. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia every year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. This years NAIDOC theme is "Always Was, Always Will Be" and it recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Students will be participating in a range of NAIDOC activities during the week. For more information please visit https://www.naidoc.org.au/
21.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE: Dear Parents As you know the College is currently closed for deep cleaning. Again, I have promised to keep you fully informed of our current position regarding Covid 19 at our College. I will also let you know that I am required to comply with Privacy legislation. However I do feel obliged to let you know we have recorded positive student cases. As you know, while all Prep to Year 10 students were online learning since the commencement of Term 3, we were ...required by the Department of Education to have Yr. 11 and Yr. 12 students attend on site and to accommodate students whose parents due to work commitments could not care for them at home. I will let you know we have a Yr. 11 student test positive whose last day of attendance was July 22 and two Callistemon students, a Year 2 and Year 4 whose last day of attendance was July 27. I am working with both Department of Health and Department of Education to manage these cases. I cannot advise of any further details at this time. Again if you or your family members have flu like symptoms please follow the governments advice There are also resources and supports available on DET’s coronavirus (COVID-19) advice for parents, carers and guardians page. Thank you for your support, and I will provide further information as soon as I receive any updates. Again we will continue to communicate with you. Hope you are well, please keep safe. Please note the College remains closed until further notice. David and Meredith
20.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM DAVID SMILLIE: Dear Parents, I am sincerely hoping you and your families are well. It is certainly a worrying time for us and our local area. As you know our College is currently closed. The reason for this closure is a contractor tested positive who was at Deloraine Campus on July 22 the important thing is they were present from 3.30 -7.30 pm. Students were not present at school at this time. Similarly, staff were finishing a little earlier this week..., and were also working significantly reduced hours to minimise risk. The closure occurred as a result of our Principal Team displaying a high level of caution and requesting the Education Department to support our community to ensure the College is thoroughly and forensically cleaned. As you know from our previous communications our aim is to keep students, staff and families safe. I know we did request Yr. 12 students to attend VCAL and VCE classes this week. I accept this might appear to be unreasonable, however the problem for me is , at this stage, my instructions from the Government is to deliver both these programs onsite in class. As the College Principal I am required to comply with this directive. I am advised all assessment, the GAT, Sacs and exams at VCE level will proceed along with VCAL requirements and this does include attendance. I really don’t want our students to be further disadvantaged, hence the appeal to attend classes. Let’s hope there might be some change to these arrangements in the near future. Again Meredith and I will be honest with you , we will provide advice and continue to communicate with you. Please contact the College if you do have concerns. Thanks David and Meredith.

14.01.2022 Callistemon students had a Dress like a Principal day today and we had some amazing entries of what students believe a Principal should dress like. Lots of our students chose to dress as Mr Smillie. This is Caleb from Year One and this was our photo of the day and was Mr Smillie’s favourite entry. We think Caleb got his Mr Smillie costume spot on!

07.01.2022 Update from David Smillie Dear Parents How are you ? I can imagine at this stage of the lockdown things are getting more difficult for you. I know it is certainly more difficult managing the College and keeping in contact with families and students. We are all hoping it will be all over soon. I have spoken with lots of parents during this term and I certainly appreciate the way in which you have supported your children with remote learning and the positive feedback we have... received. I do understand the challenges of keeping students engaged and learning. We have done our best as a College and I don’t think any of our staff could have given any more. I just hope it has been enough for your children. Like you, I am very much looking forward to getting the school back to some form of normal, that is students actually attending onsite. It was only this week that we received advice from the Department of Education as to how schools will operate across Term 4. To safeguard against any re occurrence of infection we will gradually return from October 12 to October 26, when we hope , depending on the advice of the Chief Health Officer, all staff and students will return to school based learning. I will provide a brief overview of KEY DATES applying to both Callistemon and Deloraine Campus, as we currently know them. 1) Term 4 commences October 5 and remote learning continues. No students at school, other than Year 12 students on Wednesday, October 7 for the GAT and a practise English exam on Friday October 9. All other students remain at home. The College will be open for children of essential workers and students based on certain criteria from October 5 to October 23. We will provide the application form in a parent update during the holiday period. 2) October 12 - All Prep to Grade 2 and Year 11 & 12 students return to at school learning. All other students remain at home (except vulnerable & children of permitted workers) 3) All Grade 3 to Year 10 students remain on remote learning from October 5 until at least October 26. Obviously if Covid19 is under the required average of daily infections and on the advice of the Chief Health Officer this return date may change. Tomorrow is our last day of Term 3, when we commence our two week holiday break. Please keep safe and lets all hope that Term 4 is kinder to all of us and especially the students we miss so much. David and Meredith.
