24.01.2022 PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT CAULIFLOWER Cauliflower generally appears as white broccoli, and it contains many of the same nutritional values. Whilst it’s available all year, it is in its peak during autumn. A fresh cauliflower should have a crisp texture and a mild nutty taste. Bring out its natural sweetness by drizzling olive oil over it and roasting it in the oven.... Selecting tips: Cauliflower heads should be firm and tightly closed, with minimal dark spots. Look for green and crisp leaves as a sign of a healthy cauliflower. It’s best to avoid cauliflower with soft heads which could mean spoilage. Health benefits: Cauliflowers are considered one of the healthiest vegetables. They are packed with vitamins and minerals and have anti-inflammatory properties. Cauliflower is high in vitamin C, vitamin B-6, iron, calcium and magnesium. Storage tips: Cauliflower is best stored in the fridge in an open perforated bag or in a paper bag (either should stop the cauliflower from sweating). It’s highly sensitive to ethylene, so don’t store it with apples, melons, tomatoes or bananas.

21.01.2022 PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT HONEYDEW The sweet honey-like flavour of this variety of melon makes it ideal when eaten fresh, in a salad or as a dessert. How do we provide top quality honeydew?... Honeydews don’t sweeten after they have been picked, so we choose them based on indications of ripeness (the riper, the sweeter it is). They should have a slightly waxy skin, a flavoured aroma at the stalk end, and they should also sound hollow with tapped lightly (a good indication of maturity). Ripe honeydew should also yield to pressure at the flower end. We also check for any handling injury (such as bruising). How to store honeydew: Honeydew is best store in a dark cool place, such as the pantry. Once cut, it’s advised to store it in the fridge. Honeydew nutritional information: Honeydew contains vitamin C, iron, potassium and folate. Serving suggestions: Honeydew makes a great addition to a fruit salad / platter or it can simply be enjoyed on its own.

How do we make sure we provide top quality radish?... When harvesting, radish should only be picked if the leaves are crisp and green (this is a good indicator of the health of the bulb). We also make sure the bulb is plump, unblemished, hard and good in colour. Taste is best when the radish is about one to two inches in diameter larger radish tends to taste woody. What is the best way to store radish? If you’re not using the radish soon after you purchase it, remove the tops (they store better without them) and store in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge.
