17.01.2022 Tanya Dicken's presents her famous Eureka Flag talk to hundreds of visitors each. As our Visitor Services Officer, Tanya is the face of the Eureka Centre Ballar...at - and, in many ways, its heart and soul. We are pleased Tanya had the opportunity to share the story of the Eureka Flag as part of Ballarat Council's Be Kind, Be Creative initative. Be Kind, Be Creative is a program helping connect artists and cultural institution with audiences during a time when many people are in isolation. Through Tanya's talk we are pleased to share with people The Eureka Flag - one of Ballarat's and Australia's most beloved cultural artefacts. The Eureka Flag, also known as The Flag of the Southern Cross, is on loan to the Eureka Centre from the Art Gallery of Ballarat. This short film also features some important artworks from the Gallery's collection that help tell the story. 16.01.2022 Trove has landing pages Explore, Categories, Community, Research and First Australians - linked under the Trove logo on main pages. They contain themed inform...ation and if you have time this weekend, you may want to look. Here’s what’s on Explore (plus a tip for newspaper search): Explore is about browsing Trove. It includes a link to the Newspapers & Gazettes browser (trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/) - a page for browsing titles by state, date range etc. SEARCH TIP: If you want to search across all newspapers first, we recommend starting from the main homepage trove.nla.gov.au instead. The search bar is larger here, and you can also select from the All Categories menu, just before you hit the green search button, to see only Newspapers & Gazettes results on the next page. Explore has Collection Features which showcase themed content from a range of Trove Partners. We also feature blogs that suggest starting points to explore across different collections in Trove.

14.01.2022 WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this post includes images and names of deceased persons. This week is National NAIDO...C Week, which celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We have been working hard on a number of projects relating to some of our Aboriginal records. One of the projects we are very excited to have just completed is an index of information relating to the Aboriginal people of Borroloola, a remote community approximately 7 hours southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory. Borroloola has historically been home to a number of different Aboriginal cultures, including the Yanyuwa, Mara, Karawa and Kurdanji people. The Yanyuwa and Mara are referred to as 'saltwater people' and are associated with the Sir Edward Pellew Islands and the lower reaches of the McArthur and Wearyan Rivers. The Kurdanji and Karawa people are classed as 'mainland people' and are associated with land to the south and east of the present Borroloola township. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, anthropologist Marie Reay undertook extensive fieldwork in Aboriginal communities in western NSW and the Northern Territory, including at Borroloola. Through the course of her fieldwork Marie created many records, including field notebooks, photographs, and extensive notes on residents. One of the records she created was a set of detailed index cards for Aboriginal members of the Borroloola community. These cards give us incredible insight into the Aboriginal people living in the area at the time and record names, ages, birthplaces, totems, kinship groups and details of relatives. We have just completed work on a searchable index of these cards and this will be available on your website shortly. We hold a large variety of records relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This includes records relating to Aboriginal people working on pastoral stations; records within our trade union collections relating to Aboriginal rights campaigns; and records of individuals, such as Marie Reay, who conducted research relating to Aboriginal people. If you would like to see if we hold any records that may help with your research, please feel free to email us at [email protected]
