12.01.2022 Legendary jockey Richard ‘Darby’ McCarthy OAM passed away this morning at the age of 76. A natural talent, at age 10 he won the first of more than 1000 races at... Thargomindah, earning the nickname 'Darby' after one of Australia's most famous jockeys at the time, Darby Munroe. Initially based in Queensland, McCarthy won three Stradbroke Handicaps, the Brisbane Cup and Doomben 10,000. Arguably his best day in the saddle came in 1969 when he won the AJC Derby on Divide And Rule and the Epsom Handicap on Broker's Tip. During the 1960s McCarthy took up a contract to ride in Europe, where he enjoyed further success and freedom, the latter still a struggle for indigenous people. He rode in three Melbourne Cup’s and while he never won, he had a great influence on the race we know and love today. After falling in the 1960 Cup in a field of 32 runners, Darby wrote to the VRC Committee suggesting that there should be a reduction in the field size to ensure the safety of riders. The following year the numbers were reduced to 25 and subsequently reduced to the now accepted maximum field size of 24 runners. During his later years he became known as Uncle 'Darby' McCarthy, becoming a role model to young indigenous people and the Darby McCarthy scholarship is awarded each year. In 2016 he was honoured with the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for 'service to the horse racing industry'. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

01.01.2022 Another Melbourne Cup Carnival has come to an end, and like every year it was one to be remembered! For the first time in a long time, the sun was shining all d...ay on Cup Day for The Race That Stops The Nation! We saw a nail biting win from Vow And Declare to take out the Prestigious Melbourne Cup. After a protest that altered the top 3, we saw Prince Of Arran promoted from 3rd to 2nd and Il Paradiso to 3rd and Master Of Reality was relegated from 2nd to 4th. This year marks the 24th year of providing race goers with corporate hospitality at the famous Flemington race course. Hosting guests in both the Home Straight Enclosure and the Winning Post Enclosure. A big thank you to our resident caterers Atlantic Group for another deliciously tailored menu, and their staff for continuing to provide exceptional service. Once again, BLUSH coverband, had guests dancing the afternoon away, regardless of the rain on Derby, Oaks & Stakes Day. A special mention as well to the security team, and also to all staff at Mercury Principle Events who work so hard throughout the year to ensure all our guests have a memorable experience, from beginning to end. Finally, thank you to our clients, new and returning, for choosing to enjoy this iconic Melbourne event in the Winning Post and/or the Home Straight Enclosure You bring the event to life! We look forward to welcoming many guests back in 2020!

01.01.2022 Obviously at the present time things are a little different to what we expected it would be after Round 1 of the 2020 AFL season. We have spent today refunding ...all our AFL bookings until we have a definitive answer as what will happen with the rest of the season and then those people will have first right of refusal to re-book those games when played. We will also keep people informed in relation to events later in the year as news becomes available. While it is a pretty depressing time there was one highlight today with one of our clients wanting to book packages for The Melbourne Cup Carnival in November. It made me stop and think for a moment that the outlook of some people is definitively "Glass half full" types and I loved it. While it is looking pretty bleak at the moment, things will get better and we will move onward and upward once again as it did after the "recession we had to have" for those old enough to remember it back in the late 80's and early 90's. I did contemplate slipping away quietly and mowing lawns or something but this is my 25th Melbourne Cup Carnival and if the VRC think they are going to get out of giving me my "Gold Watch" they have another thing coming. Good luck to all those small, medium and large businesses and their employees doing it tough at the moment keep going and moving forward. Some may not survive in the present form but there will opportunities along the way, just stay open to what comes up.
