25.01.2022 These days some of the most damaged hooves can be healed.

05.01.2022 Connections between the hoof and higher pathologies. Further to my earlier post about how feet can cause back pain here are some more studies linking certain ho...of morphologies and conformations to dysfunction in both the axial and appendicular skeleton. Fig 1. Is further to the link discussed with high low hoof conformation. Due to the asymmetrical propulsive forces of the mismatched fore hooves the horse has to make compensations to maintain spacial awareness and straight line locomotion. These increase strain on certain parts of the musculoskeletal system as outlined by Dr Ridgeway. Fig.2 Discusses the findings of Kilmartin on the effects of medio lateral imbalance on certain musculature. Fig.3 lists the current sites of pathology associated with negative plantar angles. Fig.4-5 shows again the myofascial lines through the body which can help to explain the links we can see in these studies. The horse is a system of kinetic chains and a complex biotensegrity structure. Every anatomical points position, orientation and physiology will have influence on every other. This is possibly magnified in regard to the hooves at they are the interaction point between the horse and the ground and starting point for any locomotive action. What’s important to recognise is that the relationships we see here are fluid and cyclic, the hoof is a product of the forces from above while at the same time directly affecting the entire musculoskeletal system. These again show how important holistic care is in any kind of treatment and certainly in rehabilitation.

02.01.2022 A timeline of laminitis- time to damage and expected damage to the structures of the foot. 1. Starch /Grain Overload Laminitis Undigested carbohydrates pushed ...from the small stomach into the hindgut and cause a rapid change in the gut bacteria and a drop in pH, the lining of the gut disintegrates and toxins are absorbed into the blood stream causing a massive inflammatory reaction. Time to destruction/separation of the basement membrane is 24-40 hours. Time to the inflammatory response in the feet causing more damage is 72hours, during this phase a chemical is released in the feet which is linked to the degeneration caused by arthritis. 2.Overload of Fructan Laminitis- Unknown mechanism of action but time to destruction/separation of the basal membrane is 24-36 hours. 3.Toxaemia/Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome Laminitis Caused by an infection or toxaemia. Time to destruction/separation of the basement membrane is 8-12 hours, there will also be a rapid loss of shape and arrangement of the sensitive lamellae. Time to massive inflammatory response in the feet is 1.5 to 3 hours 4.Endocrinopathic (high insulin) laminitis- Unknown mechanism of action but insulin is thought to change the circulation to the foot causing vasoconstriction. There is a much slower onset of damage, no separation of the basement membrane, no massive inflammatory response either in the feet or in the gut. Lameness is due to the lengthening of the secondary epidermal lamellae, due to stretching rather than separation of the basement membrane, 28% of ponies are considered to have a higher than normal level of insulin and are said to be predisposed to this type of laminitis. Time to onset of laminitis from abnormally raised insulin levels is 36-48 hours 5. Mechanical onset laminitis, caused by uneven weight bearing or concussion-Is distinct from other forms of laminitis until the later stages, when there is evidence of secondary inflammation and vascular disruption, thought to be caused by inadequate blood flow to the tissues of the foot. Time to onset depends on the loading and level of concussion. Image is the damage of concussive laminitis caused by an escaping racehorse galloping on a road, there was a massive inflammatory response within 20 hours See more
