25.01.2022 Heres a great post with some things to consider when your planning a funeral. There are a lot of options these days. Some of these you may not have heard of.
25.01.2022 Thanks Jodie for sharing a great chat with Shane, and letting more people know about my service. As an end of life doula I can see where I can ease fear and anxiety around death and dying by offering, emotional, spiritual and practical support in my service. 24.01.2022 Music can be very important to us. It can spark thoughts and emotions, often letting us relive memorable events in our lives. But have you thought about what music you would like played at your funeral?

21.01.2022 Such a powerful message to hear. Losing a pet can impact us in the same way as losing a friend or family member. The grief is the same. They are our friend and they become our family. We do need to stop saying it was just a dog.

20.01.2022 A great reminder from The Death Deck for us to review our important documents in the case that things dont go to plan! Do your family know your wishes or have you had that discussion with them? Or do you think they arent needed?
18.01.2022 Grief is normal. Spread the word!
17.01.2022 Many Australians prefer to stay and be cared for at home when diagnosed with a terminal illness or as they approach end of life. Choosing home as a place of care, however, needs careful consideration to support not only the person at the end of life, but also family carers. To support them, #CarerHelp is highlighting practical pointers, resources, and tools for #CaringatHome https://bit.ly/CarerHelpHomeCare1
17.01.2022 With the restrictions easing, Queensland has taken another small step towards normality, with 100 mourners now allowed to attend funerals (inside and outside) if the venue is big enough. Check the status update from Burstows!

14.01.2022 This is so true. I have purchased a few of these packs and they make great gifts. A fantastic and sometimes fun way to get the conversation started.
13.01.2022 Margaret and Derek Firth had been sweethearts from the age of 14 and were married for 70 years. This is the final photograph ever taken of the 91 year olds befo...re they died with coronavirus. They were initially treated in different hospitals but were moved to be at each other's sides days before they both died. RIP. See the full story here: https://bit.ly/3tJNWGq See more

13.01.2022 If you have a spare hour, grab a cuppa and listen to this great webinar, on how to approach conversation with young people around death, dying and loss. Talking about grief and loss with young people is imperative, especially during COVID-19 where people are experiencing many different types of loss. Guest speakers Megan Daley from Childrens Books Daily and Elham Day from Hummingbird House have a great discussion on grief and loss with The Groundswell Project.
12.01.2022 On the couch today with Kym at Briese Lawyers - Toowoomba for this years The GroundSwell Project, Dying to Know Day. This event encourages people to start that difficult conversation around death and dying. Today we talked about how we can start up the conversation and looking at what we can do now, to prepare for the future. If this chat sparks any questions you might have, we are both happy to be contacted to discuss further.
11.01.2022 Have you checked out these sweet earrings from Mikah Hand Stamped Jewellery and Gifts. 100 per cent of sales will go towards a cold cot. What is a cold cot? A cold cot allows bereaved parents time with their child that was stillborn. The cot is vital in bonding, memory creation and being able to spend every minute with your child that you wont get to take home. The loss of a baby changes a person forever. If a cot can keep the baby in the room with his/her parents for even just 1 day that is 1 day more than without.
07.01.2022 Even as a nurse of 40 years, I can still remember my first patient death. I had just started nursing and was caring for a young mother who had been given a life limiting diagnosis. I was not prepared for this, or had no idea what to say to someone dying. Despite this, over my nursing career I found myself drawn to dying patients. I wanted to learn more about the process so I could offer patients worthy end of life care, and I wanted to feel comfortable with them so that we co...uld have the open and sometimes difficult conversations that many avoid around this time. A few years ago, I cared for a man named Bill as he died. He was an old bushy at heart and had many stories to share with me, but his favourite was a short story written by OHenry, The Last Leaf . Bill recounted the story about a young woman who was seriously ill with pneumonia, and she believed that she would die when the ivy vine on the wall outside her window lost its last leaf. He told me the story with such passion and sincerity despite his frail condition and I knew that this would be the name for my business. And so The Last Leaf was born to help people like Bill and his wife navigate death and grief. Through The Last Leaf I want to help change the stigma around death and dying, bringing about the realisation that dying is a natural part of life and one we need to acknowledge. This is why Im also passionate about offering training, assistance and grief support to those who work with dying and grieving patients. I remember how helpless I felt with that first dying patient as a nurse all those years ago and I hope that I can help others out there in that situation feel better equipped and enabled to offer quality care and support to their patients. For me, this is anything but a job; its truly a privilege to get to accompany people on their end of life journey and help them shape what it should look like. This can be a difficult time and, as with any partnership, its important to make sure were the right fit. Id love to meet you for a chat and a coffee to hear your story and discuss my services to support you and your loved ones. All initial consultations are free and can take place at my home, your home, or at an agreed location. You can contact me directly on 0414748036 or [email protected]. Or have a look at my website https://www.thelastleaf.com.au.
07.01.2022 I love this question. Maybe because we associate many negative feelings with our overwhelming grief, we are unable to recognise some other positive skills or feelings we have needed to get through.

06.01.2022 Incredible strength with these families. Message of hope, love and forgiveness in this story they have shared with us
05.01.2022 I have cared for people who at the time of dying have not wanted to discuss organising their own funeral, understandably so, at this time it is very confronting to have those discussions, and often have ended in tears and family upsets. When left to do while everyones emotions are high, and people are vulnerable, often the dying persons choices are not discussed. Having an early conversation and planning can take some of the logistical and financial burden off your family af...ter death. Check out the link below to see how you can pre plan an affordable simple and transparent cremation. Bare Services can include: 24/7 Customer Support Transfer into our care from the place of passing Transfer to the Crematorium Private, unattended cremation Cremation, doctors and legal fees Return of ashes to the family
05.01.2022 Beach time is a time to catch up on some reading. When Breath becomes Air is a memoir written by neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi, diagnosed with lung cancer, and dying in 2015. He writes I began to realise that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense had changed nothing and everything. This is a life affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death, as a doctor and a patient!
03.01.2022 Got a question to ask? Another Dying to know Day event!
03.01.2022 Recently I had the honour to sit with B on her last day. She requested I sit with her, as she did not want to have her sons present at the time. I walked into her room at 9am and was lucky to be joined by her friend also. For 10 hours we shared her space! Laughing crying and sharing personal stories, while knowing B was leaving us soon. We face timed family, and when we were not able to do that any more we sent photos through. At 7pm she died, peacefully and knowing all her wishes for her death had been honoured. Have you thought of how you would like your last hours spent?
03.01.2022 Michelle shares her experience with the life event we are all going to experience, death. She touches on topics which we do not think of until someone has died. This story is insightful, educational and at times humorous! 14 mins. https://www.ted.com//michelle_knox_talk_about_your_death_w
