23.01.2022 2nd In my series of masks named after women who shaped me is this sombre toned one called Ann. It is named not after my sister ( Anne, she might make an appearance later) but after our great great grandmother Ann Paulson . She passed away long before my time, but I carry her creative genes. She was a talented painter exhibiting and medaling ( in photo) in the mid to late Victorian period in Mansfield , England . It was rare for women artists in Victorian times to paint portraits. That was considered unseemly , never the less , I have two un named portraits , male and female, and I’d like to think the female one is a self portrait. I guess I’ll never know. I am part of her legacy....through my fathers line, what will my legacy be? .... what will yours be?
21.01.2022 Back from my fabric scavenging mission ... and delighted with the results .. I love a paisley ... hoping some men find their brave and wear them with confidence ... otherwise girls, it’s up to us to look fabulous !
19.01.2022 3rd lady in my series is called Carita... 1890-1975... she was my fathers mother. Most of my memories of her revolve around Saturday trips to Catherine St Punchbowl to help dad mow her lawns as grandad passed away early and she remained alone , but she had two wonderful sons that looked after her . We’d load up the station wagon ( ECO 978) with mower and bikes , head past Trotman and Reid service station atTop Ryde( there was a black dog...) ... and spend the afternoo...n fighting the tough buffalo lawn. Well, I rode my bike , Anne probably was of more practical help lol. I remember the smell of the pines outside her front door... and the frangipani . The house was dark, the bathroom had exposed copper pipes , the kitchen was sparse. I seem to recall that there was only cold running water ... an old kooka stove, a round table with spindle back chairs, and a dresser... I don’t think it was a fitted kitchen.... and there was an outside loo. ( the clothes line was the old kind with props!) Dad would mow half the lawns before stopping to share afternoon tea around the kitchen table. I seem to think we sat mostly in comfortable silence .. I don’t remember her voice. But there was always jam tart biscuits and iced Vo vos. Other than the paintings I mentioned in a previous post, the only keepsake I have from grandma is this cup. It’s nothing fancy. She wasn’t a fancy lady, but it’s a tangible link to that past and a grandma that loved me. She raised two amazing men , John and Fred through some of the 20th century’s hardest years... a credit to her humble stoic resilience. See more
08.01.2022 It’s been a few days since posting , partly because life is very busy, but partly because this post is the hardest to write. #4 lady in my series is really the #1 lady of influence in my life, my mum. Joan Elizabeth Whitefield ( née Sattler) 1927-2009; was the youngest of 5 children born to Frederick and Louisa ( don’t squeeze her) ( her joke) Sattler. Mum was a special gift to her parents after the deaths of the two youngest boys , Gordon and Geoffrey, one at birth , the... other aged about 2 of childhood desease ... she was the golden child. She married Fred Norman Whitefield in October 1949 and raised a family of 4 girls, me being her youngest..: bonus baby ...She sewed and knitted endlessly to clothe the family. I distinctly remember helping make pom poms for the ties on a knitted skirt and top she made me. It was sky blue with camel and white triangle patterns around the cuffs. She was very involved in her church and the ladies activities including the mending of clothes for Lutanda children’s homes. I Spent many days with her, the other ladies and their kids learning sewing skills, but mostly it was these women who taught their children to love and serve God, and express that through caring for others . In their retirement, they loaded up the Pajero and towed a caravan to outback communities, and spent lots of time in the Kimberly region sharing their faith and practical skills with several aboriginal communities . They loved the people, the outback and especially marvelling at the bird life ,so whilst many things remind me of my mum, the black Cockatoo in this fabric definitely brought her to mind. See more
