20.01.2022 Does this kind of skin discolouration look like you? This is a condition called Poikiloderma of Civatte. ( Thanks to the French dermatologist who first described it). The good news is that you can treat this problem. Poikiloderma usually involves a mixture of hypopigmentation ( light patches), hyperpigmentation ( darker areas), and fine blood vessels. It is seen especially in fair skinned people who have had a lot of sun exposure. Another fabulous effect of too much UV light.... It’s not really known how many people have it, as some would have it in a very mild way that wouldn’t bring them to a clinician. It can become worse from the use of perfumes on the neck making the area more sun sensitive. Menopause/ or low oestrogen levels can also make it worse. ( Great! Something else that menopause gives women!) There is also a genetic component, so that if your parents have it you would be more likely to. So, what to do? Prevention of worsening is a good start . So sunscreen every day, no perfume on the neck, including perfume in soaps. Good home care involving Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Acid serums are a good start. Then more specific ingredients like hydroquinone, Kojic acid, Arbuten may be prescribed. But the real winner is BroadBand Light. We love this treatment at the Mayah Clinic.
