22.01.2022 Thought I'd take a quick moment out of a busy pre 30 June day to thank everyone for their interest in our page of late and also to welcome our new clients who have joined us in preparation for the new tax year. We have capacity to bring more selected clients on board and encourage you to message us to make a time to meet. You don't have to be "car crazy" to become a client.....but it will give us something to talk about other than accounting and tax !

14.01.2022 Hobby or Business ? Over the last few months I have been busy preparing myself for my motor racing debut. This process involved a lot of planning, budgeting and hands-on preparation work. This exercise got me thinking about the amount effort, planning and financial commitment people often devote to their hobbies and how similar this type of activity is to running a business.... Often a hobby presents an opportunity to recoup some of the costs associated with it. Be it the sale of a piece of artwork or craft, selling offspring from a livestock breeding hobby or something similar. Quite often within the practice we see instances where clients believe their hobby should be classified as a business as they wish to take advantage of possible taxation benefits around claiming costs. Often this results in a loss situation and clients aim to offset this loss against other income from their normal activities. We also see activities which are more than likely a business being classed as a hobby it is a double sided sword. So what distinguishes a business from a hobby ? If you engage in a hobby and think there is an opportunity or a risk of your hobby being treated as a business, please do not hesitate to contact us.

08.01.2022 Thinking of purchasing assets for your business? The instant asset write-off threshold has been increased to $30,000 and extended to 30 June 2020. If you purchase an asset (new or second hand) costing less than $30,000 and it is used or installed ready for use from 7:30pm AEDT on 2 April 2019, you can claim a deduction for the business portion.... Different thresholds apply for assets purchased before that date: - from 29 January 2019 until before 7.30pm AEDT on 2 April 2019, the threshold is $25,000 - before 29 January 2019, the threshold is $20,000. You may purchase and claim a deduction for multiple assets provided each asset is under the relevant threshold. Assets that cost $30,000 each or more cant be immediately deducted. You can continue to deduct them over time using the small business pool.
