Time is against us with winter approaching, so if you have any you want to offload, please give us a call on 0401 590 875, or send us a message.

23.01.2022 A few action shots from our successful ’How to Build a Wicking Bed’ workshop held at The Old School Community Garden yesterday. Thanks to everyone that came to help build the last few wicking beds, and learn new skills at the same time. Friends, old and new, bogged in to get the job done. Great to see Adelaide Hills Councillor, Kirrilee Boyd there too. The garden was alive and buzzing with activity. A lot of work has gone into this year-long project. ... Thanks to Marty, David and Hamish for running yesterday’s workshop, and for all the hours put in by the committee (e.g. Ben, Simon G, Don, Simon J) and garden volunteers during the year to build and replace all the wicking beds - 25 in all! And thanks again @adelaidehillscouncil for enabling it to happen, and to @NeutrogAustralia for their donation of fertiliser.

23.01.2022 Hi everyone! August garden sessions are almost here. We'll be taking small, tentative steps to slowly come out of winter (and Covid) hibernation. Come to any or all sessions, potter around, and still maintain physical distancing and safe hygiene practices. If you're feeling energetic, perhaps lend a hand to install the remaining wicking beds ready for Spring. We'd love to see you.

23.01.2022 Getting exciting to be meeting lots of wonderful folk at this great event next Sunday. Come along and say hi!

A Claret Ash, Manchurian Pear and Copper Birch tree. @adelaidehillsoutdoorplay and @theoldschoolcommunitygarden are so grateful for them and can't wait to watch them grow and provide shade for children to play under. @ The Old School Community Garden in Stirling

20.01.2022 Today we pruned the espaliered apple trees. 'Espalier' is the horticultural, ancient agricultural practice of controlling plant growth for the production of fruit, by pruning and tying branches to a frame, or training branches against a trellis or wall. Benefits of espalier include:... You can grow more fruit in less space You can trains plants to produce more fruit Can create interesting designs and landscapes Harvesting fruit is easier No ladder is needed if trees are kept low Photos show one of our apple trees before and after pruning.

19.01.2022 BUSHFOODS PLANT COLLECTION DAY. At last, we have some news for those lovely folks that attended our first Bushfoods Workshop in November last year. As you know, our second workshop on 2 May, when you would have collected your plants kit(s), had to be postponed due to the Covid19 pandemic. ... We can now tell you that our bushfood plants are still available from the suppliers, and well be planting them out in the community garden on Saturday 27th June. If you ordered plants at the first workshop in 2019, please come and collect your plant kit(s) on the day. Members and visitors are welcome to come and help create the bushfood trail. Our garden volunteers will be there to provide advice and guide the planting. We have plenty of room to keep our physical distance! You'll discover bushfood plants native to our local area. Thanks to you all for your patience during this difficult time. We're still hoping to have a second workshop with Uncle Ivan Cropley at some time in the future. We'll keep you posted.

19.01.2022 Hi everyone, This week we received the best news we've had all year! Adelaide Hills Council has just committed to investing $155,000 to upgrade the 150-year-old heritage schoolhouse at the former Stirling East Primary School site. ... You may remember that in mid-December last year we feared losing The Old School Community Garden from the site altogether. At the time, Council advised us of the potential for management of the site to be handed back to the owners, the State Government. After years of hard work by volunteers transforming the neglected land around the building into a thriving community space, we knew the existence of the garden that we had so lovingly created at the site was in jeopardy, and we just couldn't let this happen. But neither could we let the historic school building continue to deteriorate. We received a huge show of support from you, our members, and the wider hills community, and we subsequently presented to a Council meeting about just how much we value the community garden and how widely used it is. We proposed practical solutions that would make the old school building useable. Council had specifications drawn up for repairs and upgrades taking into account the heritage value of the building and our interests in being able to use it, along with opening up scope for more community organisations and services to also use the facilities. And now, almost a year later, the news of the upgrading of the school building has given us renewed energy and motivation. It means our future at The Old School Community Garden is looking more assured. We are looking forward to working with Adelaide Hills Council, and to finding more ways of connecting the community. We would love your continued involvement at the community garden, and welcome new and renewed memberships. Please email any inquiries, or questions about hiring a garden plot, to Helen, our membership officer, [email protected] Thank you to all our members and the hills community for your support. Now we can move forward with more confidence - to plant, nurture, grow, learn, meet, dream, share and thrive in nature - and our beautiful space. The Old School Community Garden committee

18.01.2022 Do you need to get out of the house? Then come and immerse yourself in the community garden at the next communal gardening session on Sunday from 9am - 12. With Spring almost here, there's so much to do. Some of our plots need a bit of TLC, and hands are always needed to help fill some of the new wicking beds, or think about starting some seeds in the greenhouse. You might even have your own ideas or projects. Hope to see you!

09.01.2022 Postponed Bush Foods Workshop - Part 2 To those of you that were involved in our Bush Foods Workshops, thanks so much for your patience while we continue to work out the logistics of getting your plants to you (if you ordered them) in light of the Covid19 restrictions. For those of you who placed plant orders, we are aiming to have plants available in June. 06.01.2022 Sadly the @uraidlasusfair has been postponed due to federal government advice regarding cancelling non-essential events to slow the transmission of COVID-19. ... The organisers didnt make this decision lightly and I really feel for them after the amount of organisation that has gone in and all done by volunteers (youre amazing!!). I really want to encourage anyone who was thinking of attending the sus fair (and even those who werent) to check out the websites or socials of the stall holders. It takes weeks of preparation before having a market stall and due to the last minute decision to postpone these stall holders will be out of pocket. If you were looking forward to buying a product from one of the businesses get in touch with them and buy something anyway! Itll make their day . We are so looking forward to the rescheduled fair and if youre freaking out about Coronavirus and dont want to leave the safety of your own home, perhaps consider having your fruit and veggies delivered... we currently have lots in stock. 05.01.2022 PLANT PROPAGATION FOR BUSHFIRE REGENERATION: Thank you to all the wonderful people that propagated plants for bushfire-affected gardens in the Adelaide Hills, and brought them back today, so we can hand them over to the SA Bushfire Garden Revival group (SABGR). All the plants are doing well, and are well-established. Great job everyone! The photos show just a few of the hundreds of little plants that people have propagated. We transported a few of them to the Summertown collection point, where Kate and Suzie will continue to look after them until they can be distributed to people that want to re-establish their gardens. A big thank you again to Jenny Deans for organising this wonderful event.
