25.01.2022 Few things as exciting as a fresh delivery from the UK.

25.01.2022 With the flurry to reopen for browsing, we’ve taken a break from our daily recommendations, which we began in March (March!!) and intended as a small contribution to helping us all through lockdown. More recommendation plans are brewing - in the midst of all the wonderful browsing that’s also happening right now - so watch this space for a new & updated series of books we love. There are so many to choose from ... (And remember, you can find a complete list of our daily recommendations on our website.)

25.01.2022 The Paperback team trying to fit all of the books we’ve loved this year into one Best of 2020 list.

21.01.2022 Just in and already the source of serious excitement: Shu-Ling Chua’s debut collection of essays, Echoes.

19.01.2022 Robert’s reading & loving Bohumil Hrabal’s Closely Watched Trains. Milos is a young, innocent apprentice stationed at a Czech train station in 1945. Hrabal flits between comedy & horrific realism in this depiction of the German occupation of Czechoslovakia during the end of WWII.

18.01.2022 One of the loveliest things about preparing to reopen is that it gave us a chance to refresh our reco table. Feast your eyes on this!

17.01.2022 Join us on the zoom tomorrow at 6.30pm AEST. We’d love to see you.

16.01.2022 Although our door is now closed, we’d love to continue to post you good books. There’ll be someone at the shop every day between 10am & 5pm. You can get in touch via phone, email & our online store. We’ll be seeing this next stage through alongside you & doing everything we can to help along the way.... Take care, Melbourne

16.01.2022 Day three of being open again for browsing and it seems like a good time to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who has supported us with online and other orders during lockdown. Thank you for the lovely notes you’ve included with your orders. Thank you for the emails and phone calls and the waves through the window. And thank for returning to browse and say hello again after all this time.... See more

16.01.2022 Everything you need for a good weekend.

16.01.2022 Esther’s reading & loving Fleur Jaeggy’s Sweet Days of Discipline. A girl’s lonely days in a Swiss boarding school are partially relieved by the friendship of an even lonelier & stranger student.

15.01.2022 It’s true, from 11am tomorrow our door will be open. Our opening hours this week are: Wednesday & Thursday 11am - 6pm Friday 11am - 7pm Saturday & Sunday 11am - 5pm... Next week we’ll announce extended hours, including evenings. Our online store will remain open 24/7. We can’t wait to welcome back into the shop (masked, sanitised & in restricted numbers, but still.) See more

14.01.2022 We’re very happy to be open again and look forward to welcoming our customers and browsers back into the shop. We’ve missed you! November new releases coincided with re-opening so we are rather well stocked with new, exciting titles - and then there’s our trusty reco table, backlist shelves and cards. We’re here for recommendations as ever. For everyone’s safety we’re following guidelines to be able to remain open.... We ask everyone to use hand sanitizer on the way in. We are too. We can have 7 customers in the shop at one time. If you’d like to spend 15 minutes or more in the shop we’ll ask you to leave your personal contact details with us. Wearing a mask is still compulsory. In addition to this we are following our Covid-19 cleaning and safety regime. Social distancing is important for the safety of our staff and customers so please bear this in mind inside the shop. A protection shield is in place at the counter. Thank you all for helping us to keep our door open and our shelves fully stocked. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon.

13.01.2022 Welcome back! We’re so happy to see you

13.01.2022 Well, that’s a lovely surprise.

12.01.2022 Our opening hours next week are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 11am-8pm Tuesday CUP DAY 12-5pm Friday & Saturday 11am-9pm Sunday 12-6pm

11.01.2022 We had such a hard time fitting all the books we love onto one list that we’ve made two lists instead. The first is our Best of 2020. The second is our Best of 2020: The backlist edition (because we all know that, more than ever, 2020 has been a great year for blacklisted books). You’ll find them both at www.paperbackbooks.com.au

10.01.2022 You might have noticed that we’ve begun talking about our favourite books of the year earlier than usual. Among other things, Covid has meant serious disruptions in the availability and supply of books so we’ve picked our ‘Best of’ early and stocked up on these and other books we love. But don’t worry, we’re still reading (because we books). And we’ll be reading and recommending and adding to our list of favourites right up to (and we’ll beyond) the end of the year.

08.01.2022 Esther’s reading & loving The Beautiful Summer by Cesar Pavese: A teenage girl in 1930s Italy falls in with an artistic set & her innocence is traded for something more alluring.

08.01.2022 It’s mid-November, which means it’s also time to start thinking about your summer reading. Fortunately, our shelves are full-to-overflowing with 2020 new releases as well as those books you’ve always meant to read but haven’t got to yet. If you prefer to do your Christmas & holiday shopping online this year, we do Click&Collect & postal deliveries. The Australia Post deadlines for Christmas are: 2 December for TAS 3 December for NT... 14 December for VIC, NSW & ACT 10 December for the rest of Australia. COVID has caused major disruptions to the supply of books. We’ve stocked up on titles we love & that we think you’ll love too, but we cannot guarantee that the books you want will still be available in December so plan your shopping early & don’t leave things to the last moment (like we usually do). 2020’s been hard enough already, so remember we’re here to help with recommendations for you, your family & friends. We are very happy to provide complementary wrapping. We can even post your gifts directly to the recipients with a card & a special note from you. We’re here 7 days a week & our online store is open 24/7. As always, we’d love to hear from you. See more

05.01.2022 What we’re reading & loving... Anna’s reading At the Edge of the Solid World (Brio) by Daniel Davis Wood. It’s a brilliantly compelling novel that strikes to the very heart of what it means to be human.

04.01.2022 Anna’s reading & loving At the Pond, a beautiful anthology of essays by women who swim - some occasionally, some all year round - at the Hampstead Ladies’ Pond.

01.01.2022 We’re loving this beautiful blousy display on Crossley St.
