23.01.2022 Decades ago, I began my professional career in schools and had the unbelievable privilege of working at a time when funds were available to teach social and emotional skills. A small group of talented, heartfelt, and dedicated teaching professionals headed up a centralised team that drew another small group from within schools to champion the work. I was spoilt. That experience set a high bar. Memories of heartfelt, inspiring moments with students schools had deserted, with p...assionate adults who cared, remain just as vivid as the day they were lived. When the funds dried up, so did our ability to come together. I moved on and every now and then I recalled that time wistfully. I wanted to work in schools that took that dedication and compassion further. It didn't eventuate. Even more so today, they are needed. Maybe the work of Kate McAllister and James Mannion is the renaissance of what some of us glimmered in the last century. I hope so. See more

23.01.2022 A great resources from the collaboration between Fantasy Phonics and Phonicbooks Ltd. Download now. Given that Australian students are nearing the end to their school year, these games are perfect to maintain momentum over the long summer break. The words lists on their own can be used for a variety of activities. Terrific resource. https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk//free-/fantasy-phonics-game/

18.01.2022 Now that a portion of my work is as a therapist, I am seeing a many adolescents and young adults who struggle with anxiety and depression (a difficult history with reading is often in the mix). This little app may be of some use. Designed by Stanford University-trained psychologists it ensures that the most evidence-based therapy approach is available to all, anytime, anywhere. https://woebothealth.com/the-app/

02.01.2022 Every parent would benefit from purchasing this series on Commonsense Parenting. There are 9 tapes in total. I wish I had listened to them a long time ago. From a warm heart, every parent needs to continuously teach their child the skills they will need to engage with the world as a socialised human being and one that can regulate their emotions. This teaching enables our children to find their bearings throughout life in any situation much more readily than those who aren't taught. We lose our bearings when we get caught up in our insecure thinking - which is why we need to also teach our children about what being in our bearings feels like and how to regain them. Well, well, worth the small investment. https://www.pranskyandassociates.com//commonsense-parentin
