24.01.2022 People who make good decisions have a better chance of being successful. The same applies to actors ... so, that is our topic for the FINAL TALKING ACTING for 2020. Listen to this scientist explain the best way to make decisions. https://www.abc.net.au//making-better-decisions-t/12954368 Although he is not talking about acting choices, all the same principles apply ... THEN tune in tomorrow at 5:45pm for 10 minutes of Talking Acting and further insights from a psychologist's point of view. Fascinating.
24.01.2022 The essential ingredient that enables any performance to communicate with an audience is that the performer is externally focused on the other person with whom they are communicating. Thats Acting 101. The same rules apply to both dancing and singing. This performance from Stefanie Caccamo illustrates the point beautifully. She is so externally focused here, it actually feels like she is talking to someone. Its that sense of the relationship and how she is trying to effect that person that make this GREAT storytelling. Well done, Stef!!
23.01.2022 A GREAT SELF TAPE Stefanie Caccamo sent me this email yesterday: I wanted to share with you an experience I had recently and how this small shift made a world of difference. A friend of mine asked if I would read against him for a self-tape, he had to film. He was interested in what I had been learning at The Rehearsal Room and so I coached him through some of the basic techniques - Conversation Goal, need and stepping up. He said that he has always struggled to shift hi...s focus away from what he is doing and maintain an external focus. However, after applying a Conversation Goal, he immediately felt a shift in his performance - he was no longer thinking about acting and what he looked like, but rather what he wanted to achieve in the scene. He sent the best take off to his agent and got an immediate response. His agent said, "Thats the best tape Ive seen from you." And, what did the actor himself say, Its the best work I have ever done. 23.01.2022 The Balance Between Emotion and Purpose. This was a talking point in this mornings Drop In session. This topic always makes me think of this image of Jeff Kennett on the day he lost government. There is a huge amount of emotion and sadness in him at this moment but still the intent or the purpose thats driving his presence at this press conference is pushing through.

16.01.2022 WHAT IS THE ACTOR’S JOB? Whatever the ‘performance’, the actor’s task is to engage an audience with the drama of the story. The ‘character’ the actor creates is the main storytelling tool for delivering that story.... An actor who doesn’t understand how ‘story’ functions will never be clear about the role their character plays in the story. ‘Understanding’ the writer’s storytelling skills is the key to understanding where the story’s power lies and that is in the character’s journey. Being emotionally engaged with the power of the writer’s words is the pathway to the actor ‘missing’ the point of the story. The actor’s aim is for the audience to be ‘engaged’ with the power of the writer’s words when they emerge from the character’s mouth in the performance. An actor who is connecting to the power of the writer’s words is often ‘dead’ to the audience. When an audience is connected to the power of the story that’s evoked by the performance, the audience is ‘alive’ to the actor. 14.01.2022 What are the qualities that make a good actor?
14.01.2022 OUTSTANDING WORK Six different characters with six different agendas and six different relationships unified in delivering one scene with one STORY and one POINT. This was impressive work. And it was delivered with total clarity in record time.
12.01.2022 It is not surprising that actors are drawn to playing the DRAMA in any scene we are all attracted to drama. Thats why we all want to slow down as we are passing a car accident. Drama obviously attracts an audience, doesnt it! WHY THEN, SHOULD YOU GIVE YOUR CHARACTER A SENSE OF HUMOUR? Firstly, a character that has a sense of humour will be more CHARMING and likeable. When we like a character we are going to be more committed to them. We will be hoping for a successful ...outcome to the problems they face in their life. That means we will be more engaged with the story. Secondly, a character that was a sense of humour will be more COMPLEX because they will see the funny side when it is appropriate or see the ironies in a dramatic or challenging situation. A character with a sense of humour often HEIGHTENS THE DRAMA. This is the third advantage. An actor who hides the drama by playing light colours lets the audience work out how big the story problems are. That way the audience has more ownership and more understanding of the real size of the problem the character is facing. Actors who just play the drama display the most obvious problems for the audience and restrict the audience options. YOUR CHARACTER SHOULD HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR BECAUSE it delivers - # more ENGAGEMENT # more CHARM # more COMPLEXITY # more DRAMA and therefore # more STORY.

09.01.2022 BLAST FROM THE PAST 1 I directed this brilliant script by SHANE BRENNAN in 1992. In this scene a complicated plot is established but the cleverness of this storytelling is that we not only get the expositional details but most importantly WE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A STORY ABOUT RELATIONSHIP. Outstanding work from a stellar cast led by the incomparable CATHERINE WILKIN, ALAN FLETCHER doing a fabulous job, a brilliant guest role from PETER CURTAIN with NICKI WENDT, FRANKIE HO...LDEN and JOHN POLSON incredibly strong in support. Embassy was a wonderful show to work on. A brilliant script editor in ANNE LUCAS and a great producer in ALAN HARDY.
09.01.2022 The coalface, ground zero for the actor and the director is when they are working on the shoot. That's why how the actor deals with the direction they are given is so important.
